H. Leighton Dickson grew up in the wilds of the Canadian Shield, where her neighbours were wolves, moose, deer and lynx. She studied Zoology at the University of Guelph and worked in the Edinburgh Zoological Gardens in Scotland, where she was chased by lions, wrestled deaf tigers and fed antibiotics to Polar Bears by baby bottle! She has been writing since she was thirteen and pencilled her way through university with the help of DC Comics. She has three dogs, three cats, three kids and one husband. She has managed to keep all of them alive so far. A Hybrid author, Heather has the successful Upper Kingdom series (Scifi/Asian fantasy) on Amazon along with the Gothic thriller series, COLD STONE & IVY published by Tyche Books. She also writes for Bayview Magazine and is a photoshop wizard when it comes to book covers.

This is, as promised by the blurb, the autobiography of a dragon from his untamed childhood through enslavement to various owners to becoming an invincible warrior and finally the leader of his race. At times the cruelty of his human masters and the devotion of his rider and lovers moved me to tears. And how wonderful to read a dragon tale where the humans are the secondary characters and the nobility, courage and the integrity of a dragon is the driving force of the story! The central idea of humans' wilful ignorance and unthinking mistreatment of other creatures of nature is extremely well developed. This book is both emotionally challenging as well as intellectually stimulating.

This is a beautifully written and crafted book. The story is captivating. The author's words paint pictures so cleverly that you can smell dragonbreath. Try to read it slow and savour it but this is a challenge. I failed and I will be going back to read this story again and again.

I was very excited to see this book appear. I bought it and started reading at once. As far as I can recall, it is the most brilliantly written piece of prose I have ever seen in the Amazon store, and it just keeps on flowing.

Eventually it begins to lose some of its edge - it's almost impossible to maintain that level of style unless you're prepared to spend years on a book - but it's still way better than just about anything else out there.

However, there is a lot more to a book than its prose, and it's here where things start to go wrong. The most difficult part of most books is the section sometimes known as the "muddy middle", and this book was particularly affected. Basically, the middle of the book was a series of events -- some very good, others fairly ordinary -- which meant that some parts were rather forgettable. Once it got into the climax, things were good again, but that left around half of the book with problems.

Altogether it is much better than the majority of fantasy offerings, but I believe it could have been so much better.

I really enjoyed this story. As many others reviewers have said there are strong style similarities with Black Beauty. I found that this familiarity enhanced the reading, as I was able to enjoy the differences between dragons and horses and the imagination required to create them. I will be recommending this book to my reluctant reading teen (maybe with the suggestions of using the audible narration as well).

I have never read a book where the author has managed to sound so much like a real dragon - absolutely brilliantly done!
