After reading the first book in The Fairies Saga, Naked in the Winter Wind, I suppose I suffered a momentary lapse in memory. Luckily for me though I came across Ha'penny Jenny and the storyline came racing back. Evie, a time-traveler from the 21st century now finds herself a woman in her twenties married to Wallace and the new mother of triplets in 1781. She and her hubby also have adopted Jenny, a pre-teen who completes their family with energy and wide-eyed wonder about life. We don't know exactly where Jenny came from at this point but we do get a glimpse into her younger days when she talks about her 'other brothers' who are now in heaven. It appears Jenny has suffered a lot before being adopted, yet shows a great amount of resiliency and appreciation for her new family. Evie and her daughter have a close relationship and can talk about everything with candor and sensitivity.

The characters in this book jump off its pages with a freshness and simplicity that both intrigue and delight the reader. The light-hearted manner in which Evie accepts her quirky existence tickled me. I'm not sure what I would do under similar circumstances.
I highly recommend Ha'penny Jenny and the entire series!

Set in the 18 century, this is a fascinating look back at that time period through the eyes of a family, especially a young girl called Jenny. Some of the characters have traveled back in time from the present day, and this adds an interesting element to the story. Jenny has suffered some horrible experiences in the past, before she was adopted by her new mom and dad. We see glimpses of this past and she has a brush with someone that takes her back to that frightening time. But Jenny is safe now with a family who love her. Learning about the world and relationships through her eyes was delightful.

A delightful read. This story made me want to read even more of the series. I haven't read any other of the author's books, but this one drew me in. I love the setting and the characters and can't wait to learn more about them in the first book and the other books that follow. If you love fantasy, I highly recommend this book.

A Gritty Glimpse Into the Past.

This was an intriguing time-traveler's tale and took me on an unexpected journey back to 1780 North Carolina. All is not what it appears to be. Jenny, the adopted pre-teen daughter has faced enormous obstacles in her young life. She is so relieved to find herself in a loving family that your heart goes out to her. Her mother's life is full of complexities as she has left a daughter in the 21st century and she's coping with 3 new-born babies.
The author is very adept at describing the harsh conditions of the time and the reader feels compassion towards all members of this family. I especially enjoyed the sections of the novella where Evie, the mother is obliged to explain the facts of life to her daughter.
This story gave me a taste of what is to follow. Adventure, drama and tragedy are just around the corner.
