Chapter One
Colin Mac Brodie was the biggest rogue in all of Scotia.
He was also the key to Seana's greatest desire; Broc Ceannfhionn.
Since they'd been wee ones together, Seana had loved Broc, had dreamed of someday being his wife. She wanted to take care of him, as he had done for her so oft as a child.
She would never forget the day she'd first spoken to him, the same day Colin Mac Brodie had broken her heart.
But Seana wouldn't fool herself.
Broc had merely felt sorry for her that day. She knew that. How could he not have? She'd been a lame child, scarce able to walk. But, since then, the years had been kind to her. With much determination, and the help of her da, she'd strengthened her leg and now the limp was scarcely noticeable in her stride. She'd had nothing to offer Broc before now, and had begun to fear the day might never come. But now she was strong and able and ready to be the wife she knew he needed and deserved.
He was a kind and good man, and Seana thought she might be able to make him a good home.
She only needed a bit of help to convince him.
Why was she such a bloody coward?
Colin couldn't hurt her anymore.
Well...She peered at him out of the corner of her eyes, her gaze acknowledging the strong lean lines of his body. He could hurt her, but not even Colin Mac Brodie was so cruel a man to hit a woman.
Still she was a coward.
"Milksop," she muttered to herself, "worse than a bloody Sassenach!" And she frowned in wholehearted disapproval at the feet that stood planted so firmly upon her mother soil.
She had come to this wedding not to celebrate, for while these were not her enemies, neither were they her friends. Nay, she came to speak with Colin Mac Brodie. It galled her that she should need his help, but she was not so proud that she was willing to lose the man she wanted for the sake of her pride. Everyone was getting married, it seemed--the MacKinnon, Meghan, and soon enough Alison MacLean. It was only a matter of time before Broc should wed, as well.
Now was the time to act.
So what was she waiting for?
Seana frowned as she contemplated the answer.
Her gaze wandered to the happy bride and lingered wistfully upon her. Meghan had been the envy of every woman in Scotia, with her beautiful dark hair and her perfect face. If aught at all, the Brodie women had been cursed with loveliness, Seana thought, not madness as had been the rumor. Och, but there was nothing in Meghan's eyes that betrayed madness at all, and Seana truly believed the eyes were windows to the soul.
As kind as the years had been to Seana, they'd been even more so to Meghan Brodie. Though it was difficult not to envy Meghan, for she was everything Seana was not, somehow Seana could not. While Colin's sister was beautiful, she'd lived as lonely a life as Seana had, except that Meghan had had the love of her grandmother and the friendship of MacLean's youngest daughter. Seana had had her da, of a certain, but her da had never been her strength. Rather, Seana had been his.
Speaking of which...She turned her face up to the sky to gauge the hour. It was growing late and her da was like to be hungry by now.
If she didn't bring home some nourishment for him, he would not eat, she knew.
For most, the gaiety was only just beginning, but if Seana didn't make her way home soon, her da would be asleep for the night and without supper. Nor did she relish the thought of making her way through the woodlands when night had deepened the shadows of the forest to black. She was not afeared, of course, but practically, it was simply too dark to keep to the path.
Meghan's celebration had been a grand one. Her brothers had denied her naught, despite that it had come about so suddenly. The festivity had begun early in the day and would continue until the wee hours of the morn, she knew, until the men were drunk enough to kiss the ground and their women were forced to drag them home by their feet. She would have loved to have brought her da, but her da would no longer leave their home, so Seana was forced to come alone, and to bring him home her tales.
Och, but she was a coward!
Belonging to neither the MacKinnon nor the Brodie clan, and having lived practically alone most of her life, Seana had few friends, fewer yet who were so close to Broc as Colin. In fact, she doubted anybody knew Broc better than Colin did--though Colin was certainly his own best friend, and none other's. Still who better to teach her how to win the man she loved than the man who knew him best?
And neither did anyone know better what attracted a man to a woman than did Colin Brodie--rotter that he was!
There was no way around it...she needed help, and Colin was the only one she thought could provide it. She'd tried all her wiles with Broc; nothing seemed to work. Broc remained blissfully unaware of her interest, if not of her presence. He was such a sweet clod of a man, Broc was, and the thought of him, as always, brought a gentle smile to her lips.
She shook her head in disgust as she considered her options...short of asking him outright to wed with her, she had tried all else she knew to do.

- Reviewed in the United States on August 11, 2014Out of Ms. Tanya Anne Crosby’s the highland brides series this is my favorite one I have read thus far! Why, just because this is a highland historical romance the prologue brings to mind everything that young girls go through whenever someone makes fun of them for something or other the deep sadness, regret and feelings just bring to mind the strong determination of some unwilling to be bullied that even Ms. Crosby knows how it feels to be in this position. So I just instantly felt a kinship with Seana when she was young and lame in one leg when she goes crying to her friend Broc and her father both of them can’t stand to see her in pain. Seana grows past this and even though she becomes a beautiful strong-willed brave young woman she never has forgotten the cruel taunts the rejection of the handsome full of himself highlander hero Colin.
Colin Mac Brodie the handsome vain good-looking hero of the piece while at his sister’s wedding is the center of all the women’s attention. Being a lover of women and quite a heartbreaker to all women can’t help but notice a beautiful raven haired green eyed quick-witted and silver tongued young woman the heroine Seana. Seana brushes off Colin’s advances to get to know her and he being the narcissistic guy that he is doesn’t realize that Seana is the same girl that he used to make fun of when they were younger. Seana only went to the wedding to ask for Colin’s help and couldn’t do it after Seana comes to terms with herself and her feelings are under control she gets the courage to ask Colin to help her snag into wedding her and get the attention of his best friend and her friend as well Broc. Does Seana succeed in getting Broc when the unfortunate happens that Colin secretly loves her and also has feelings for her too despite the past rejection he felt before?
The story just made me smile, laugh and think how Colin’s perfectionist attitude and his twisted thinking that everyone must be this way but yet despising the very thoughts that he was raised with. That someone can knock and bring him down making him think differently and turn his whole world upside down is just such a joy to read! I loved Seana’s tenacity her strong spirit and in that yard when all the kids were making fun of her I would have instantly stood up for her and been her friend. That is why I love Ms. Crosby’s knack for story-telling and her instant likability of all her characters. Despite Colin’s boorish self-centeredness I’m good enough, I’m smart enough and doggone it people like me way about him I still couldn’t help but like him as well. That is also why I rated the book five stars, can recommend it out of all the highland brides series for the strong heroine alone and have purchased the rest in the series!
- Reviewed in the United States on February 20, 2023Such a simple story yet filled with such colorful endearing characters that I loved this read .. I would recommend for a fast happy fix!
- Reviewed in the United States on January 5, 2020This is the third book in this collection of books in the series that I just finished. It was a very good book with great character building, a detailed fleshed out story as well as appearances from characters from the previous novels (since they're family now, but don't live together). This story follows the lives of Colin MacBrodie and Seana (H/h). The following is a short summation (some spoilers) of my interpretation of this romance novel. Seana has no clan, as she and her father live in a creagh (caves) that is located on three different clan families property (MacLean, MacBrodies, MacKinnon). From the story, Seana's mother died after she was born (childbirth difficulties) and she and her father, Donal the drunk, moved from their house to these caves to live in, after she died because he couldn't stand for people to give condolences about his wife, or how he makes a living, how and where he tends to his whiskey, or how he raised his daughter. Donal tends his still (in a secret location) and sells it to the locals for their livelihood. By his namesake, he drinks more than he sells a lot of the time (as he tastes what he creates like all people do that creates food/beverage for people). Donal is all she has and he loves her and she him. The story of Colin MacLean and Seana starts (for her at least) when they are children. She has a birth defect and is bullied and taunted and teased by the other children in the clans. Everyone (boys and girls) love Colin, as he is everything the boys want to be (gorgeous, gregarious, good at everything) and the girls want him for their own anyway they can have him and do (he gets quite the reputation as he gets older). He just has that vibe (bad boy) that some guys instinctively have. A very bad incident happens when they are young, and she never forgives him or forgets him. Seana also meets/makes friends with his (Colin's) best friend, Broc Ceannfhionn (means blonde in Gaelic). He is big/tall for his age and ends up being Seana's champion throughout childhood and beyond.
When Seana gets older, her father is getting ill and she wants to get married, so that her father will have some where to lay his head that is not the cold, hard ground. She wants to have a house to live in for her father. It's drafty and cold in the cairn and it is making him wheeze, fatigued, and feeble. The sunlight hurts his eyes, so he can't make his secret family recipe of uisge beatha ( handed down for generations). He has taught Seana how to make it with the still, when he is too ill to get up from his pallet on the ground and make it his self.
Seana gets the idea that she wants to marry Broc but he doesn't look/like her in that way. She doesn't know what to do about it. The story is about what happens when she wants to approach his best friend (Colin), for help to go about this, but they haven't seen each other since "the incident" in their childhood and he doesn't remember her. What ensues is a great romantic story that I, for one, will never forget. It is really touching. All of the clans get involved at the end for a mystery that answers questions that some might have had at the end of the first book. Oh, BTW, no spoilers but my fave scene is near the end and their plan that the women come up with is so freakin' hilarious!! I can just imagine that happening! I cheered at the end. I'm on to the next book. I would recommend this book. It is for adults due to sexual scenarios. They can be read as stand alone, as the author does a good job of filling the reader in on what they might have missed in the other books, but you WILL definitely have a much more enriched reading experience if you read them in order, IMO. Cheers...

4.0 out of 5 stars Good storyline and characters but needed more action and romance
I liked the storyline. Seana was severely disabled as a child and shunned by other children. She grew up with her father, was very poor, and now had to look after him by herself due to his poor health. Colin was a womaniser and did not recognise Seana who was now a beautiful lady, as the child he ridiculed in the past. Of course, now he desired her but she was determined to marry his best friend who was the only one who had always been kind to her.
There were many editing mistakes which were slightly distracting in the book. I didn't like how much was dedicated to Meghan and her husband since they were not the main characters in the story. Although Seana had a good idea to save Colin, I thought that having women dancing naked, petting and writhing together was a step too far and seemed ridiculous.
It would have been good to read more about Seana's childhood e.g. how she was brought up by her father and how she coped with her disability from day to day. There wasn't a lot of action or suspense in the story, just a little romance and one steamy sexual scene. I liked Colin's character growth and the ending.
