4.6 4.6 out of 5 stars 618 ratings

Sicilian Defense is the fifth book of the epic Fayroll LitRPG and Gamelit series. With each chapter, we approach the resolution of the secrets which the main character Hagen faces in the game and life. Why is he being hunted? How do players know about his secret quests and deeds?

In reality, Harriton doesn't have time to solve all these new problems, as an attractive and flirtatious journalist appears in his editorial office as a new employee, causing Kifs girlfriend, Vika, to show her teeth, then the "Consortium" appears - a powerful competitor to the Raidion bosses. These problems are beginning to mount up as life is becoming more complicated and Kif beings to live two lives. Hagen or Harriton? A game or reality?

Fayroll is more than just an RPG game. In this world, mysterious riddles of ancient legends are intertwined with the thirst for success and the vanity of high-level players, the search for treasures and legendary objects that are occupied by all newcomers without exception, but its interests are pursued not only by players, but as big bets made in the real world. Luck is on the side of Hagen, but no one knows what awaits him in the next assignment because Fayroll is not just a game, events and decisions that the hero takes in virtual space affect the real world. His unpredictable character, perseverance, and excitement attract the attention of powerful forces, the existence of which the hero does not even realize. He should be more careful, because this fantastic world, created for the best of cult games World of Warcraft, League of Legends and Lineage II, holds many dangers.

Can he complete all his tasks and quests? Will he keep in touch with reality or choose to continue his epic quest in Fayroll? The answer to this question is waiting for you in this new part of the Fayroll series. A highly valued and recognized European bestseller is now available to readers around the world. Fayroll is so good that you can’t wait to choose your character and find out how the journey in this fantasy universe can turn out. Start your RPG journey together with the recognized master of LitRPG Andrey Vasiliev. You are about to begin the best quest of your life.

At times, he feels he was meant to be an innkeeper someplace on the outskirts of Bree in J. R. R. Tolkien's Middle-earth. However, in real life, Andrey Vasilyev is a much-celebrated Moscow-based author, as well as one of the originators of the relatively new, yet insanely popular genre that blends cyberpunk, classic sci-fi, and fantasy.

By his own admission, Andrey started writing in his late 30's and only "because there was nothing handy to read," but after his first two urban fantasy books gained nearly instant acclaim, he had to give serious thought to changing his current banking career to that of a professional writer. Fortunately for his readers, who had voted his debut young adult novel More Than a Game the "Best Book of the Year 2014," he never looked back after that.

Over the next few years, he continued work on his now-bestselling Fayroll series, maintained a blog, and participated in various multiple-author projects.

When he is not writing his intricately crafted, action-packed stories, he enjoys playing online shooter games with his son or rummaging through second-hand bookshops and bookstalls in search of rare editions or personal favorites.

Our hero Kif, whilst trying to complete the quest from the Goddess, ends up becoming involved in more quests through no fault of his own.
After helping an old colleague from his early days in Fayroll, he then learns that the Double Shields are trying to find him. After completing the second stage of the quest from the Inquisitors, he ends up in the Borderlands, having to prove who he is, fight a duel to the death for one of his NPC friends, and the. Arrange for help from the Wild Hearts.
Another good book in the series. It’s great enjoying how quickly these are able to be translated.

I have really enjoyed the whole series!! I really enjoy the fact that Kif can log out and enjoy the real world. I am looking forward to Kif spending time with Vika's family and seeing her sister after getting booted from the clan. Please keep it up!!

A little slower than previous books but I still loved it.

The story is very good. Looking forward to the next book. This book is making me want to go to Moscow and just look around. I imagine the women are all beautiful and the men are all business with intrigue and mystery. Not sure I'd survive. 😉

It was an interesting addition to the fayroll series, and while i enjoyed it it seemed to plod on at a slow pace. it was good but felt more as a setup book for the next in the series than actually progressing the story along.

The ending - a suspenseful buildup and hook into the next book, but also a cliffhanger of a type I don't appreciate.
In general, the book feels a bit vague. The story doesn't flow as it should and pacing is sometimes irregular. At times it feels like the author is picking events out of a hat, then tries to tie them together in a VR world which seems curiously incomplete.

Within the real world - our MC Kif grows the paper staff by four, with one being a mole for a competitor involved in a deadly serious game with Kif's bosses.
It's difficult to understand the real reason that Kif has gotten so much attention and compensation. He did write a good series of articles and found a unique quest line within the game, but that seems insufficient reason for the promotion, cars, property, and money.

The antics of Kif's bosses are also a bit unusual. They may reflect an imagined reality in Russia, but too often feel like episodes of the silent pictures Keystone Cops!
Programmers as upper level executives - not if a company wants to remain both operational and profitable. It's a different business acumen and thought process.

Where does the series go from here? In the VR world, finishing out the current quest and the two more within the current quest line. Plus, what ever additional quest, clan games, God's in overwatch, and interpersonal relationships the author cares to throw in. Good Russian meals and lots of vodka in real life. Maybe we may even begin to find out what's really going on...

4.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant and gripping, but ...

Again we see a new episode of the Fayroll adventures. Fast paced russian humor mixed with fantasy LitRPG ... nicely done.
The story goes on, new players enter the scene and the background story around Raidion takes a couple new turns as well.
    Loved it.
Why do I give four stars?
Because I HATE cliffhangers. Vasilyev actually wastes a full page with several phrases all meaning the same, talking around the pot about some information that the protagonists realizes at the end instead of giving a teaser what he found.
I HATE that. Don't do it again, it's an infantile way of treating your fans.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great continuation of the series, though a little short for the price!
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on October 10, 2017
Once again the characters and story is excellent here. I think this is one of the best LitRPG game worlds and character development tracks. Whilst the character is clearly having advantages over other players it is not Meta Gaming but a gaming style.

I did feel the book could have been longer, and it is perhaps loosing its value for money but well worth buying and reading. This is really why I have given a 4 star.

1.0 out of 5 stars Save yourself some money and don't buy it!
Reviewed in Canada on October 4, 2017
I read through the first 3 books in the blink of an eye. They were fast paced yet contained lots of substance. I noticed the quality slowly going down in book 4, but this one takes it to new heights. They are chapters were it's some action followed by side stories that have nothing to do with the main plot. Frankly, just a waste of space, I'm disappointed and the size and quality of the book are not worth what it cost. Save yourself some time and money and keep browsing for another book.
