A boy's book about boys

Now I liked this a lot. It has a sort of changing room musk to the plot that while not necessarily sweet has a charm and a memory jog all of its own. The author has done a good job with his characters - one fears for his past and present that he knows men together so well that Chuck might just be based on him, I have no idea but there's something there in the love with which this hapless chap goes about things. As for the plot, well, sure there's a little of the stretching credibility going on here but it's such romping good fun that, hey, what the heck lets go along for the ride. If you want to read about guys together and some of their thinking even in extremis - for instance the fact that Cooper could even think about giving Chuck a wedgie while in mortal danger is so true, I had to laugh - then this is for you, what even your sexual preferences.

I just finished White Picket Prisons in record time. Even though I was never a boy, something about the connection these boys had and how it continued into adulthood made me relate fully. And despite not having grown up in the US, the description of their childhood and the connection to their neighborhood rang true and reminded me of my own upbringing. I felt like I knew these people, and they are indeed people we know in that they each have a little bit of someone we've encountered. As a writer, it was also easy to relate to the narrator's inner monologue. The plot got me hooked quickly, and I wanted to get to the end to unravel the mystery. Luckily, the book moves along easily, at a nice clip, and it's entertaining, humor-wise, while mysterious. All in all, it's a great read. I hope Phil Taylor publishes the next book soon. Can't wait!

This is a great story about a group of childhood friends who grew up, got jobs, and got married, and yet the friendship they shared as children remained firm and continued into adulthood - that alone is a great story.

The story unfolds with these four friends attending a funeral, and over the following days a set of circumstances unfolds which has them trying to unravel the truth behind the mysterious deaths that have touched each of them personally. As they delve deeper into what lies behind the murders, they learn some truths about the neighbourhood they grew up in, and about the people they thought they knew. They also ultimately learn that they can trust each other, and when push comes to shove, they will always be there for each other.

There were a few really good twists to the story that had me turning the pages. The author did a really great job with the characters - I like it when I can relate to all the characters in a book, it makes the read so much more enjoyable, and when it is infused with humour and good writing that flows, I am happy.

This is a great book - maybe a bit too short as I would like to have read more. I highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys a good mystery, and can relate to a bunch of guys who revert back to their childhood shenanigans when they are together. A good read

White Picket Prisons is a murder mystery that at it's core is really a story about the bond between friends. They are memorable characters that I enjoyed spending time with every time I sat down to read. Amid the humor and great characters is an intriguing murder mystery with gripping suspense and surprising twists. I'm hoping this turns out to be a series because these guys are so much fun I'd love to see them again!

In the interest of full disclosure, I do know the author and bought White Picket Prisons based on that. That is where the nepotism ends. The book was a great read and very entertaining. Phil Taylor did a great job of illustrating his characters and making the reader interesting in seeing how their adventure turns out. I look forward to more stories about Gooby, Chuck, Cliff, and Cooper. A satisfying read!
