- Reviewed in the United States on November 30, 2024Great Read!!!
- Reviewed in the United States on October 23, 2017As with all the books in this series, the action is fast and furious. For those of you who love reading hard sci-fi that is non-stop, this is the series (and book) for you. If you're a new reader, you'll definitely want to read the previous 8 books; otherwise, you're going to miss out on quite a bit of background and context.
Small SPOILER ALERT: This book continues the space opera setting with the blending of multiple mythological pantheons (primarily Greek and Norse) with influence from (in my opinion) Dragonball-Z as well as a healthy sampling of what I would call magic.
My only complaints are:
-- Lack of character development. The action is so fast-paced that there's little room for fleshing out the primary characters.
-- Shared vernacular and modes of thinking. The train of thought and how these thoughts (especially the vulgarity) are shared among the different (alien) cultures is a bit unbelievable to me. After all, we're dealing with multiple species (yes they're all humanoid); however, the ways of thinking and perspective should be very different between them all. There's too much blending (homogenizing) for me.
Overall, a good series and this book is a good continuation. I recommend this book for those who like epic battles and contests. I don't recommend this series for those of you who prefer stories with characters whose personalities and backgrounds that are deeper,
- Reviewed in the United States on October 17, 2017Kallias has gone 9 for9 in 5 Star+ novels with this Universe in Flames series. This latest chapter in the series is Part 1 of the 2 part finale and it has all the action, drama and mystery that all the previous books delivered.
The battles will leave you exhausted as Kallias literally makes you feel like you are fighting right beside the main character, Chase, or one of a host of characters. If all the existing foes weren't bad enough, now a virtually indestructable enemy from another dimension has appeared and the outcome of the universe hangs in the balance!
We are also left hanging because it will be another month till Kallias gives us the final outcome in his most cataclysmic novel yet to be published. This is definitely a 5 Star read and I highly recommend it and the entire series. There was Star Trek, then Star Wars, but now there is the Universe in Flames!
- Reviewed in the United States on July 14, 2020This action packed sequel has multiple character groups on several simultaneous missions all of which support the objective of defeating the Furies and restoring peace to the galaxy. In almost every case, the groups' objectives are thwarted or almost thwarted by unforeseen circumstances. They have some successes but pay a terrible price in most cases. For example, they rescue Aphrodite (at Ares expense) only to learn she no longer cares to live. They kill Arakan, the Supreme Leader of the Furies, only to have him resurrected by an even more evil and powerful entity, and at the expense of losing Oryn and having Poseidon, Thor, Chris and Argos severely injured. Other groups have similar successes and setbacks. While this is much like real life, it leaves the reader "unsettled" to say the least. Nonetheless, this is amazing Sci-Fi with a touch of mythology and superheros mixed in. I'm looking forward to reading the next sequel in this spellbinding series.

Love it.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 22, 2018This is actually a review of the first nine books of the "Universe in Flames" series. I will first say that I cut my teeth on the golden age of sci-fi - on authors like Andre Norton, E.E. "Doc" Smith, A.E. VanVogt, etc., etc. Having said that, I will say that I have really enjoyed this series by Christian Kallias. I started off somewhat slowly in the first three or four books but was drawn in note and more. Some of the technical developments remind me of Weber and White, but the plot line of one level race after another definitely sounded like the "buffer" races for the Eddorians in the Lrnsmen series. The spider ship in book 9 was like the Shadow ships in Babylon 5. Altogether a fascinating and entertaining series. However, to me, there was one drawback. The author went too far too early with the powers wielded by the Furies, especially with the General and Nisei on Droxia. I'm well acquainted with the principle of suspension of disbelief but you can only push that so far and surviving being hit by a spaceship is too much. At the end, it is wee worth the read - very entertaining.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 16, 2017I have read the entire series and I would like to add an apology to Mr. Kallias for not reviewing every book. This is by far the best space opera I have ever read. I loved the characters. This is better than Star Wars. I hope that someday some movie executive finds this series and turns it into a movie series. I can't wait for part2 . Mr Kallias has such an imagination you won't know what I'm talking about until you read the first one. Well done Mr. Kallias

- Reviewed in the United States on October 17, 2017Christian does it again with his latest installment of the Universe in Flames saga. It picks up right where he left us in Book 8 and further masterfully develops the storylines of Chase and his cohorts. (Including Greek and Norse Gods and Diabolical Enemies!) If you like nonstop action and a well thought out plot, this book is for you. Another 5 Star page turner! If you haven't already, do yourself a favor and get ALL of the previous books in this outstanding series. Can't wait for the epic conclusion this fall!

3.0 out of 5 stars Toujours une bonne histoire, mais ...

5.0 out of 5 stars Immersive storytelling.
Apart from a small distraction early on, this storytelling was just one huge rollercoaster ride after another. Christian is now running to a ending of epic proportions.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good reading, fun series.
Good scifi series by the author. The characters are engaging. There is the occasional typo but that's extremely minor. The storyline is unusual but educational at the same time.
