This is Book 2 in the Redeemer Chronicles series. It's preceded by Awakening and followed by Reclaim the Darklands. Audiobooks are available for books 1-3 singly or as a combination title. There is also a prequel series called Aeris Legends. The first story is called The Huntsman and the Healer, but even that is preceded by a very short story called River's Edge Ransom.

- Reviewed in the United States on October 24, 2017Short summary of what it's about:
The Holy War, the second book in the Redeemer Chronicles series, continues the story of Chosen Redeemer Victoria Saveron (Vic) and her friends Katrina and Tellen as they prepare for a coming war among the different peoples of Aeris and the Darkland creatures.
Longer explanation:
Among the peoples of Aeris are the Arkonai (a people gifted as Seekers, Guardians, or Healers), the Saroth (gifted as Destroyers, Shapeshifters, Conjurers, or Minders), and the Bereft (a non-magical people). As Darkland creatures grow more threatening in the land, a sect within the Arkonai people rise up to fight against the Saroth and declare superiority over the Saroth. Vic and her friends set out to bring the Saroth and the Arkonai people together to fight against the Darkland creatures and not against each other. This proves to be a challenging quest as prejudice in the land holds a tight grip on the peoples.
My thoughts:
I loved this story through and through! Seeing Vic to step into her role as Chosen Redeemer with confidence and power was inspiring! It's not often stories are told that empower a generation to rise up in their gifting & identities, so when I find one, I consider it a gem. This story is a gem.
Not only does Vic step up in her role as the Chosen Redeemer, but all of the main characters rise up to the level of opposition they face as well and they meet that opposition with courage. As the evil grows darker, the good people of Aeris grow stronger and brighter. Especially now in the world as chaos and evil seem to be in our faces every single day, it's refreshing and necessary to feed on stories that demonstrate what it looks like for people to stand up to evil & hate. Edmund Burke once said, "The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing." While it's a commonly quoted saying, it nonetheless resonates in today's culture, and in The Holy War, we see a taste of what it looks like for "good men" (and women!) to courageously confront evil.
I come away from this story feeling empowered with a fresh dose of courage in the face of the dark things around us as well as hope that we can do something about it and bring healing to this world, to one another...to us.
This is a timeless story, one that every generation should hear.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 10, 2019I didn't read book one, so I was a bit lost as to what was really going on at first.
There are still some things I am somewhat confused about.
At first, I was a bit concerned the 'redeemer' was female?
I was beginning to wonder if this was like how one Bible translation, turned God into all female pronouns?? Or it was more 'Catholic" and a symbol of Mary worship?
Then near the end, I discovered there are actually 3 redeemers, and the 2nd is male....I am still a little confused about this issue....The female 'strength' ( in a spiritual sense, who exactly is the author saying God is) is a bit disconcerting, but I definitely want to see exactly what is going on, so I would like to read the next book in the series.
However, that being said:
There were many good and godly points made!!
One that really spoke to me ..... and we are seeing it soooo much today in our world,
was:
“peace has led many into spiritual apathy. People will have to choose a master now ...”
Unfortunately, that is truly what has happened in today's world, in my opinion.
Not all trials and tribulations are a bad thing, they can help people grow in so many ways, and clarify much. And we all do have to make a choice, not choosing is actually, choosing.
I hope to read the next in the series to see exactly where this is going.
But this is a well written, engaging, story.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 24, 2022Picks up from where the The Awakening leaves off and catapults you into nonstop action. There is small recap, but you'll still want to read the Awakening first. I am looking forward the final book in this trilogy, Reclaim the Darklands.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 3, 2017The Holy War is the second book in the Redeemer Chronicles and the continuation of a wonderful adventure. I recommend this book to young adults and adults who enjoy sci-fi and fantasy stories. This is a fast paced book with a very interesting story line. Overall, I really enjoyed this book.
While told through multiple viewpoints the main characters each embark on important missions to warn others of the impending battle coming. Victoria has come to realize and work through her powers as the Chosen Redeemer. They encounter various dangers along the way and come to realize it will be a dangerous journey they must embark on.
I received a free copy of this book and voluntarily reviewed it. All my opinions and thoughts are in no way influence by this.
Final Rating: 5 Stars
- Reviewed in the United States on January 17, 2019I'd give THE HOLY WAR a 4.5 star. Not as good as the first book, but still excellent. I would have liked to see more of other characters, though. The world-building is fantastic, and the relationshio between Saroth and Arkonai very believable. ;)
- Reviewed in the United States on January 21, 2019Great book! I definitely recommend this story. Lots of action, fast paced, great characters. Loved listening to it on my phone. Pleasant voice!
- Reviewed in the United States on June 15, 2019Same as the first book. Full of Action. Fast Pace. Lots of characters, and a lot happening. Main character is still a Mary Sue. The series isn't bad, but I prefer Julie's other books for sure.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 4, 2017An enjoyable and cleverly thought out fantasy story, the second in the series. I look forward to finding out what happens next.
I received an advanced reader's copy of this book, and am voluntarily posting this honest review.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fast paced Christian fantasy/allegory
Fast paced Christian fantasy/allegory. Perhaps slightly slower than Book 1. Vic and her friends try to stop the Outcast from pitting the Arkonai and Saroth peoples against each other. They are split up and face challenges along the way. It certainly makes the point that people are people; some of whom choose to follow evil – but you can’t blame an entire race for that. And I appreciated the note that “peace has led many into spiritual apathy. People will have to choose a master now ...” We’re seeing this in our lifetime.
