Review
Lady Justice and the Vet by Robert Thornhill is a poignant, faithfully accurate story, which could have been taken from today's headlines. Mr. Thornhill, with each new episode of the Lady Justice series, continues to surpass himself. Within the pages of Lady Justice and the Vet, Robert Thornhill has presented a better, more realistic dissertation on the plight of ALL combat veterans, to whom we as a nation owe our all, than any I have seen anywhere else. Thornhill has brilliantly used a fictional comedic mystery story to force us to remove the blinders and take a peek at reality. Lady Justice and the Vet should be required reading for every politician.
Lady Justice and the Vet takes aim at the atrocious mistreatment of our veterans who require far more and far better access to both physical and psychological restoration. It focuses on the high unemployment rate, the nightmares, the disabilities, and the lack of respect. Mr. Thornhill has an uncanny talent for bringing our attention to a serious problem while also entertaining and amusing us. Robert Thornhill's house will one day be a National Monument. Okay, maybe that's a little over the top, but he is a very good storyteller, and a very good writer. I anticipate with great relish each new release in his Lady Justice series. His writing is superlative, and his ability to inform and amuse, almost in the same sentence, makes him a consummate storyteller. However, don't take my word for it; buy one of his Lady Justice stories - it doesn't really matter which one - and see for yourself.

- Reviewed in the United States on November 25, 2013I enjoyed reading Lady Justice and the Vet; my first book by this author, Robert Thornhill. The first few chapters tell the story of an Afghanistan War Vet and the changes he experiences upon his return home. Nightmares, tremors and changes in his personality are the result of PTSD, a debilitating mental disorder that follows many vets home after the war. Some warriors are able to keep it at bay and go on with life, others aren't as fortunate and suffer greatly, often turning to alcohol and drugs for solace. Ben's wife is very supportive and helps him through his nightly episodes, eventually, getting him into some of the treatment programs at the VA. There is no cure for PTSD, but the programs help vets to cope and interact with other vets, who share their stories within the group sessions. Ben was entitled to join an accounting firm in a high rise office complex. Instead, he found that he didn't want to be boxed up and feels more comfortable working outdoors with a landscaping company. "Triggers" like thunder, gunfire and even seeing certain ethnic people can cause momentary blackouts - taking veterans back to the war. Fortunately for our hero, Walt, Ben's actions saves him and his partner's lives on a couple of occasions.
Another vet from Afghanistan makes an error in judgment during the war which results him receiving a dishonorable discharge from the service. In his case, revenge drives him to become the leader of a terrorist cell within Kansas. His wish is to kill as many politicians and U.S. civilians as possible as pay back for what they did to him.
I found myself laughing out loud when Walt and his gang is on the loose...what a bad-ass group of seniors! Walt and Ox's undercover stint within a nursing home to identify Medicare fraud was hilarious. I especially like the older fellow who tutors him on the ways within...coaching him on how to not take pills, eat the food or drink the juice to avoid turning into a zoned out, unresponsive patient who doesn't bother anyone. The "underground" supply chain and scrounger within the nursing facility gets the patients pizza, soda and all the good stuff that is "medicine free".
There are tense moments within the story, but the gang of seniors get it done, even if their methods are wacky at times. A lot of fun, easy to read and recommended to all!

- Reviewed in the United States on November 7, 2015This story was a comical and sad take of what our vets have gone through and are still trying to get their lives back. - Reviewed in the United States on January 11, 201470-year-old cop (yes, cop!) Walt Williams and his much younger partner Ox go through several adventures in this book, one of a series that also works as a stand-alone. The underlying theme, however, is PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder) and how, even with treatment, it can ruin lives.
Ben, an Afghanistan vet with a set of horrifying memories, plays a major role in this yarn as does a team of terrorists led by an American whose own PTSD has turned him against his compatriots.
The author also has plenty to say about a country that neglects its veterans and generally ignores people's needs when it simply shuts down the government over political infighting.
With a bunch of quirky characters ranging from Walt's sex-obsessed father (who is in his 90s) to Mary, who runs a flop house with her 200 pound bulk and a baseball bat, the story is fast-moving, implausible, and amusing. It also finds ways to bring home the sufferings of PTSD and the permanent hell of trying to live with it.
It is a fast, enjoyable read with some important things to say!
- Reviewed in the United States on August 15, 2019Lady Justice and The Vet is my fifteenth enjoyable read/listen from author Robert Thornhill. Another entertaining clean read, filled with puns & one-liners, as always dealing with current social topics. Each book in the series seems better than the last as Thornhill continues to up his game. Narrator George Kuch again adds greatly to the listening enjoyment with his wide variety of entertaining voices & inflections, Kuch IS Walt Williams! I’ll definitely be reading more from Thornhill! I was given an Audible copy of this book & am voluntarily reviewing it. Since I own both the Audible & Kindle versions I was able to follow along while being read to. Up next is Lady Justice & the Organ Traders. (RIP Marley January 20, 2014 - July 24, 2018).
- Reviewed in the United States on November 25, 2018This is a nice little thriller, sort of, but I missed out on the humor part. It had too many sad and emotional parts for the humor to really shine. The characters are fairly developed and believable. All in all, an entertaining story.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 19, 2019Lady Justice and the Vet touches on a tough subject - PTSD. It takes us on a journey first to Afghanistan where horrific things had happened and what had caused one of the characters to have nightmares and flashbacks. This is an all too common occurrence after men and woman have gone to combat and have seen and experienced horrible things no one should ever have to experience.
We flash forward to the present time for this Vet who is now having nightmares and flashbacks each time he hears loud noises such as thunder or a gunshot. These sounds flash him back to another time that he wants to forget but he cannot. He is thrown into different scenarios that put him into the path of the main character, Walt Williams and his partner, Ox.
Walt tries to help this man and others for he is suffering from flashbacks himself of an incident in his line of work as a policeman (jumping off a building) that continues to torment him at night. There are other things happening as Walt is trying to heal himself - terrorists are plotting to kill Americans and one of these terrorists is an American who is a disgruntled Vet.
In each of these books Walt’s life is on the line as he tries to right the wrong in this world. Lady Justice isn’t always on the right side.
The author continues to write stories that deal with current subjects and tough issues and intersperses some of his contagious humor into each story. I know that when I pick up one of these quick-reads that I will be entertained and informed of what is plaguing our world. I highly recommend all books in the Lady Justice Series.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Powerful, Compelling, Page Turner
Without a doubt this is a powerful, compelling, page turner of a book. On a more serious note it looks at the serious problems faced by service personnel who have seen combat, and how all too often they are forgotten. These are the kinds of stories that I would love to see on the film. The hero of the book is veteran cop who with his partner, friends and family is able to deal with all kinds of problems. This is one of those terrible books that once you've started reading you won't want to stop. Needless to say I highly recommend it.

5.0 out of 5 stars What a read!
I love all of the Lady Justice books but this one has had a deeper impact due to the subject matter. I began reading it on Remembrance day and couldn't put it down. It feels like it was written to honor all the brave men and women who fought for our freedom and it certainly is well deserved !

5.0 out of 5 stars Another Solid 5 Stars!
As I've come to expext, this Lady Justice was again another Great read. This one was especially meaningful because of the subject matter. One can't help but be touched in a special way when it comes to a storyline about our Veterans. Absolutely Loved it!
