Jessica James tells a beautiful story of grit determination to survive the most horrific circumstance. It's a phenomenon that can only be explained by the enduring love of a married couple and the unremitting loyalty of a dear friend.
I was captivated at the very start of the story by the passionate love interaction between two individuals not wanting to separate so early in the morning. It was their hot love for each other that they hesitated to relinquish. It was such sweet and touching moment that James captured so well. She caught my attention and I wanted to linger there. I followed Blake as he took leave of the new love in his life to do his morning jogging anticipating his return to a lazy Saturday of relaxation with his wife, Cait, and his two children.
My hopes were violently shattered by the unthinkable happening. Blake returned to a scene of turmoil. His wife abducted. At this point there was no way that I could leave this story. I loved this couple and wanted to hang around to the very end to make sure that all turned out well for them. Unfortunately, it never looked that way. There were too many mishaps and never once did it appear that extreme violence would not be the outcome of the story. I really wanted Blake and Cait to survive. Their early morning sweet moment was too short. I wanted to be like their loyal friend, Bolt, and stick with them to the end. I did just that. Now I know the meaning of true love and true friendship. I have a renewed appreciation for both.
Fine line is consistent with its genre. By that I mean to say that it is written in Adult English, with some f-words, but they are not overly frequent. If this were a film, it would probably be rated PG 13 for language.
Although a genre has not been assigned to this story (on the Amazon page), I would classify it as Action-Adventure.
I found some aspects to be familiar - a navy seal married to an investigative journalist just feels too common anymore. Makes no difference if they are retired. Just a bit too common.
Otherwise, this is excellent writing. Fresh, with a feel of immediacy. I felt like I was a fly on the wall. This is a good thing, as the writing flow is excellent and difficult to put down until the end of the story.
Perhaps what I most appreciated was that this is a stand alone - no cliffhanger ending.
I enjoy Action-Adventure serials when they are stand alone.
Bottom Line
Four stars out of five. I already have bought the next book in the series: Front Line (Military Suspense Thriller) SEAL Counterterrorism Operators: Phantom Force Tactical Book 3
You're also going to want to read the first book in the series: Deadline: Political Suspense Thriller with Navy SEALS: A Phantom Force Tactical Novel
Comments regarding your opinion of this book or of my review, whether favorable or unfavorable, are always welcome. If you buy the book based on my review and become disappointed, especially, I do want to know that and I want to understand how I can improve as a book reviewer. Just please be polite.
Thank you.
I got annoyed at all - is it called third person writing- the sharing, with us readers, of feelings, memories all these tough men had, filling up the time before the final action filled show down. When working I learned about trauma; that it is only when you feel safe, that you can start to examine past things. Having had a somewhat action filled job, I know I shut down everything extraneous when a crisis occurred, just brought up the factual knowledge needed to tackle the situation. Later on, I had trouble falling asleep, of course, but then the situation had either gone bad or been bettered.
I know this is a novel, where there are other rules. I realize that we were to get to know these tough men by entering their heads, and getting it all spelled out for us, but in my opinion it was a bit too touchy-feely for it to read like a real battle.
The plot was a prime example of good guys outsmarting the bad guys, and if you are prepared for time- out moments when preparing for a fight, this will be a good enough read.

Could have done better with some brain work and making the fiction in to a good story .
