DONALD D. ALLAN is an award-winning author for the New Druids epic fantasy series. He is best known for his knowledge of just about everything – just ask him, he’ll tell you. He takes being a geek to massively huge geek levels – like level twelve. That’s pretty high. Mostly, he’s an introvert pretending to be an extrovert and so far, he’s fooling everybody. Wine helps.

He loves lying around and planning his next activities, such as yard work, house repairs, cleaning, cooking, etc. He plans a lot, but never really completes it. But planning is everything. He does complete novels though, and that surprises most people. They say “YOU wrote a book?”

Donald lives with his wife Marilyn, son James, daughter Katherine, and dog Woody, in Ottawa, Canada. Yup, he’s Canadian. Respect.

This is a very interesting series of novels with the interest building as it goes along. I like the characters and how the action switches back and forth to different characters and different periods of time. It is well written and I am looking forward to the next book in the series!

Craobh, the second volume in the "New Druid Series," continues the great writing found in "Duilleog." Since it has been a while since we've read Book 1, being able to read the Epilogue to "Duilleog" quickly brings the reader back up to speed, and better introduces "Craobh" to the new reader as a stand-alone book. Mr. Allan's writing is quite pleasant. He has a real gift of gently drawing you into the story, without it dragging on and on, or kicking you in the teeth with a "Die Hard" or "Mission Impossible" opening. You start reading and the next thing you know it's 2 AM, but you need to find out what will be happening to Will Arbor, Nadine or Brent Bairstow. There are a number of independent, yet intertwined, threads that begin to emerge in "Craobh" that build on his earlier work. There are the Druids, the corrupt Church, what I will call "the True Believers" in the church and then there are political and spiritual machinations, as well. Yet the author deftly weaves a brilliant story with these skeins. I cannot wait for Volume 3 to come out, I am sure it will mean a Hat Trick for Mr. Allan.

CRAOBH, A new Druids Novel, Volume Two, ISBN: 9780994795656, Copper Penny Publishing, an e-book by Donald D. Allan.
Plot/Characters: The time is one of heavily contentious struggles among the church elite as well as a period when members of the Druid Society were being shunned as demons by all and hunted down and eliminated by a particularly vicious sect of the Church of the New Order. The story line follows two main threads that ultimately meet to form a finale preparing for the third book in the series. The first, and main thread follows the somewhat serendipitous journey of Will Arbor, a teen age orphan who has special powers usually belonging to a Druid of much advanced age and learning, probably because of inheritance/learning from his mother, a Druid High Priestess. His mother and father were killed when, during an attempt on the Archbishop’s life, his mother had used her powers to save his father who had been an officer of the army assigned to protect the Archbishop. She immediately was recognized as a member of the group, labeled a ‘demon’ and killed. His father, as an associate was also murdered. The boy escaped and begins his journey where he encounters all sorts of fantastic occult/fantasy experiences as well as those of a more mundane world. The second thread follows General Brent Bairstow whose brother Frederick, Knight General of the Army of the Realm, has managed to provide him with a couple of Captains whom he can trust on his present assignment. The assignment being to find and return to the sovereign city a chest of gold coin conspiratorially removed from the central coffers. They both suspected that he had been set up to fail. This part of the story proceeds with the violent action anticipated. A wealth of other characters are involved to greater or lesser extent.
Discussion: The author has provided a story and in a manner that has left this reviewer with a great deal of ambivalence. Overall it is well written and parts of the tale are fascinating in detail; e.g. explanation of the Druid (Draoi) hierarchal structure from the lowest Druilleog (leaf) through Craobh (branch) and Stoc (Trunk) to Framhaigh (roots) and finally Cill Darae (priest or elevated Druid). Similarly some of the philosophical discussion; e.g. the need for harmony instead of balance because the later may require the loss of too much good to equate the two where the former accepts the bad and good and discovers a means for them to co-exist; vision is seeing, but sense is seeing by interpretation of emotions; the longer you carry a burden, the heavier it becomes. Lay it down for a while. Conversely much of the rest of the story is for the reader who enjoys tales of the Occult and an abundance of clairvoyance, visions and mysticism. And these individuals will enjoy immensely. Regrettably and perhaps solely for this reader, further editing would have greatly enhanced the story's enjoyment.
Conclusion: A book that this reader appreciated what the author has provided but one whose enjoyment could have been enhanced.

Craobh, book 2 in the New Druids Series was an engrossing, captivating and hugely entertaining read. It continues the story of Will Arbor who is now seeking the Draoi Manuscript in order to understand everything relating to the Druids. The storyline divides in book two to follow Will and also to reintroduce General Brent Bairstow as a devout follower of the Church of the New Order. When Will travels to Bremen, he finds Nadine, now an old woman who once taught young Duilleog's the history of the Druids .He is both shocked and delighted when Gaea gives her back her youth and elevates her to the status of Cill Darae. Nadine and Will fall in love and during this time, they decide to visit the Cathedral of the Church of the New Order where they steal the Druid Manuscript. Meanwhile, General Brent Bairstow is sent on a mission to retrieve a chest of Gold that was stolen from the Lord Protector, in truth it is a plot to have him murdered by Captain Gillespie who is loyal to the Lord Protector. It is a brilliantly executed story with new characters introduced to add meat to the bones of the story. This is a tale of Epic proportions from a master storyteller. It is rich in both dialogue and detail and gives the author's own interpretation of the history of the Druids which makes for an enigmatic and highly entertaining read. I received a copy of this book and decided to give it the review that it richly deserved. EK

5.0 out of 5 stars Another excellent read

I thoroughly enjoyed this second installment in the "New Druids Series". The characters continued to develop nicely, the past and present storylines were well intertwined without being confusing, and the action had just the right amount of detail. I like that the first book's epilogue was included to remind me of where we left off and although this book completed its own portion of the story very well, I can hardly wait for the next one to see what's next in the lives of Will Arbor and the Lord Protector.
