Abby, driven, a great mother of two, patient and loving, with a secret from her past that she keeps well hidden. The girls’ abusive mother is barely in the picture, critical and toxic so it’s for the best.
Then there’s Marley, broken and floundering. If it wasn’t for her sister, Marley’s three kids wouldn’t even get anything to eat. They are living on the edge. Something has got to give or the fragile structure Abby has built to keep their families going will fall apart.
Then, a babysitter introduces them to Jay Malik, a medical student from India, and he’s in love with Marley. It seems like everything is finally falling into place for the sisters, when tragedy strikes. But unbelievably, a blessing comes out of the horror, and healing can finally begin for their family.

It got to me right from the start and I had such a hard time putting it down to do anything else. Sisters, Marley and Abigail are single mothers who have had a tough life. Their mother, Pauline, was very abusive to them and their father, Hubert, stood by and let it happen. Now as adults they don't feel worthy of true love or kindness coming their way. Marley has 3 children and is not a great mom, but she does not hit them. She feels like nothing she does or can do is good enough. Abigail has twin boys and never married their dad. He was abusive to her and she didn't really see it until after his death. He treated her terrible and yet she would go back for more, until they broke up, he had another girlfriend and Abigail found herself pregnant. She was terrified of telling anyone and was able to keep it a secret until she went into labor. I sorta got the feeling her father suspected it when he took her to the hospital. After she gave birth to twin boys her mother and father helped her out as much as possible. Though her mom still found fault in her way of doing things.
Both girls meet very nice men who will change their lives forever. Marley meets Jay, from India, who treats her like a queen and shows her what it's like to feel true unconditional love. He is the best thing to ever happen to her short of her 3 children, who's father does not help out at all. Jay is the one person that Marley has needed her whole life.
Abigail is introduced to Jay's friend, Brian, who has always been crazy about her. They are both working in the same hospital, where Abigail is working on getting her nursing degree. He loves her and her boys and wants to be there for them forever.
Pauline, who has cancer, wants to make amends to her daughters and is scared that they will never forgive her. After reading some of the things she did I can't say I would blame them if they didn't though. But we are suppose to forgive, it's the forgetting that is the hard part. After a terrible tragedy, Marley and Pauline find peace and do patch things up between them. Abigail has a harder time of it though and was treated way worse growing up too.
Will things be good between these girls and their parents and will they have their happy ever after life and love? This book was a wonderful book that puts it out there like it is. No beating around the bush or sugarcoating things. Life can be hard enough without having an abusive parent and these ladies learn that the hard way. They both will do anything for each other and their children. They are both kind and loving people in their own ways. They deserve to have a good life with true love and kindness after living many years with intense pain from the one person who should have protected them and loved them unconditionally.
I had a hard time putting this book down for anything. I read until late into the morning hours and when I should have been doing other things. It was a wonderful, heartfelt, heartwarming, sad, happy, at times funny, story of three families trying to overcome the past so they can move on with their futures.
Never be afraid to read any of Suzanne Jenkins books. She is a wonderful author with a wide range of genres to choose from. This was a definite 5 star book. Thank you for writing this Ms Jenkins.

It was one of those stories, that once you start you can't stop until it's finished. Thanks for writing it.
I will recommend it to anyone, brilliant read.

I do love Suzanne Jenkins' work, having read Pam of Babylon -- and I have several others of her books waiting for me to get to them. I think she offers something unique in her plots and story lines -- and her characters have depth. Pam of Babylon was a very different and refreshing read, and I am eager to read the other books in that series.
