- Reviewed in the United States on January 26, 2016An extremely well written story with very engaging characters and exciting plot twists. I am going to read it again to be sure I didn't miss anything. I always rely on the customer reviews when choosing a new read-- never have I seen a book rate 5 stars by every reviewer. You have got your work cut out for you in the sequel, Elaine!
- Reviewed in the United States on February 1, 2016Elaine Williams-Crockett’s Do Not Assume is more than a title. It’s a warning to readers to pay attention as they get swept along by a fast moving murder mystery whose political intrigue spans decades and involves every branch of government.
The plot is intricate and filled with unexpected twists that can blindside the inattentive. But Williams-Crockett doesn’t cheat. The surprising revelations catch you off-guard until you realize the clues were there all along.
Federal judge Warren Alexander too often ignores those clues. As a former FBI agent, he should know better. Alexander is nominated to the Supreme Court by a law-and-order president who may have done some serious law breaking of his own on his climb to the top. As Alexander prepares for his confirmation hearings, old FBI colleagues need his help in investigating a high-profile assassination which, Alexander discovers, may have been staged to hide the apparent involvement of some of the president’s men in yet another murder years ago.
As Williams-Crockett describes an assassination attempt in the first few pages of the novel, it’s clear she’s a Washingtonian who knows the town well. Geography plays a role and her knowledge of obscure trails in the woods near Embassy Row lend an authenticity to the story too often missing in Washington novels written by authors who don’t live in the capital. The same is true of the way Washington’s bureaucracy actually moves. Williams-Crockett’s years as a top attorney in a federal agency bring an insider’s knowledge of how protect-your-ass feds actually behave when their jobs are put at risk by their own mistakes.
Alexander’s investigation threatens to expose those mistakes and triggers a take-no-prisoners response that blows up his certain confirmation to the Supreme Court. As Alexander fights back, he counts on the support of his wife and best friend, each of whom offer individual betrayals that stagger.
As Alexander gets closer to the truth, the pace intensifies with a life and death hunt that bounces from a darkened cemetery in New England to hidden haunts in Georgetown where the fate of a presidency, an assassin and Alexander’s professional and family future converge. It’s a satisfying resolution to a complicated plot. Alexander is a good character ripe for more adventures if Williams-Crockett decides to visit him again. It should be fun.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 12, 2015This was an awesome book that grabbed me on page one and I couldn't put it down.. This story has it all, love, scandal, secrets, murder, and lots of high powered politics.. Non stop action with lots of twists and turns that will keep you guessing until the end.. Aptly titled,Do Not Assume.. Nothing is as it seems.. Highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a great mystery/thriller!!
- Reviewed in the United States on April 15, 2016I thoroughly enjoyed this book! It was well written AND a great story! I can't wait to read more from this author.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 15, 2016This was a great book. I found I was aggravated because I couldn't' figure out who the culprits were. Mrs. Crockett keeps the action moving and certainly has a keen ability to keep potential clues very limited. That is the first time I can say I was glad to be aggravated. I also appreciated that she didn't feel profanity was needed o make it seem "realistic." I have never given a five star rating as I think that should be reserved for great literary fiction that will stand the test of time. Therefore, my 4 star rating is tops in my book. I would recommend this book for anybody. I can't wait until the follow-up is published.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 3, 2020I liked the story and the action details the author provides. It is a great plot with twists and turns.
