SHAME, GUILT, AND SURVIVING MARTIN BRYANT: One Woman’s Journey from Terror to Joy Kindle Edition
Martin Bryant will always be connected to a great deal of misery, torment and death. But it didn’t start on April 28, 1996, the day he murdered thirty-five people in what became known as the Port Arthur Massacre, in Tasmania, Australia.
This book isn’t just about Martin Bryant. It is one woman’s story of how child abuse, trauma and dysfunctional parents made her the perfect candidate for Martin Bryant’s unwanted attention, long before the massacre of 1996. Just how did the devastating childhood traumas affect this woman’s ability to demand help, to speak, to yell as loudly as she could until something was done to stop his violent stalking of her?
Could the massacre have been averted had the laws around stalking supported, rather than limited, police response to her cries for help?
What was Martin Bryant like before the massacre?
Follow the journey of one of Martin Bryant’s invisible victims, as she does her best to describe life before, during and after Martin Bryant entered her life.

The first few chapters of this book were so incredibly confronting and raw that I hesitated to continue. It shook me. I'm so glad I read through Karen's story in it's entirety though. For me personally there is much I have taken away from her experiences and learnings that I feel that it will take time to digest the story in it's entirety. The powerful messages of trusting intuition and living life with trust, not fear are just the tip of the iceberg in what this story conveys. Please read it.

A brave account of her personal journey, raw at times, I did find the writing style not to my taste, and could have been edited more but overall a story that needed to be told, and deserves to be heard.

One woman’s journey through a personal hell. Emerging as a strong and loving being, whoever reads this will take a little of this story to heart. The power of love be it given too freely, withheld too often or used as a weapon, will touch a chord in all of us.

This book is one womans incredible journey through and out of trauma. Her story is one of courage and resilience and offers hope to all those that have experienced a life of difficulty or trauma. Be prepared to be taken on an emotional journey and by the end to be filled with hope that it is truly possible to not only survive difficulties but to thrive.

I loved Karen's book and could not put it down.
Her story is told with integrity and truth, often allowing her vunerability to be seen and felt.
How one woman can experience so much suffering and shame. This book is a tribute to Karen's generosity and insights into what has shaped her to be the brave, courageous woman, who is able to write her story today, and inspirational read.

A wide-eyed girl’s tangled web of terror
Reviewed in the United States on 12 April 2018Verified Purchase
What is true terror? The wide-eyed girl’s life is. But it is written about with such self compassion and insight into the impacts this had at an emotional level. This is written from the girl’s view giving a detachment which allows us to see and understand the shame and guilt but not be broken by it as she was.
For many, the events at Port Arthur exist without context. This book provides a broader view on Martin Bryant, who he was and the impact of his killing spree on survivors and their family and friends. Something not in the news reports.
This book also gives us encouragement that it is possible to put ourselves back together after such horrendous events, with the right help and support and love. I highly recommend it.
