Black Diamond: A Boarding School Sports Romance (Stark Springs Academy Book 1) Kindle Edition
No one here tolerates wimps.
If you can't handle it, leave.
Welcome to Stark Springs, Colorado, home to the most talented young athletes in the world. When Roxie Slade snaps into a pair of skis, there's no one on Sugarville Mountain in Vermont who can keep up with her. Not even the boys. Still, Roxie was shocked when she received a scholarship to Stark Springs Academy, a boarding school that churns out Olympians in each graduating class. Entering as a high school junior, Roxie can't wait to learn from renowned coaches and train with the fastest ski racers from all over the globe. But upon arrival, Roxie discovers that Stark Springs lives under its own set of rules, and it appears one boy plays dictator.
Ryker Black is not friendly and Roxie cannot fathom why everyone wants to be his friend. Sure, he's gorgeous and rides a snowboard like it's his fifth limb, but he's cold, ruthless, and holds way too much power over the Stark Springs population. Roxie won't put up with it. She's here to train, and she doesn't care about impressing anyone off the slopes. The only problem? Ryker Black doesn't permit defiance. Not without consequences.

About the author

Ali is a USA Today Bestselling author of sports romance books. She has always loved to read, especially when there's a happily ever after, but found that there weren't enough books out there featuring girl athletes. So, she decided to work on that. Like the heroines in her books, Ali is an athlete, with running and skiing her favorite sports these days. Ali hails from Vermont and now lives in her own happily-ever-after in Colorado with her husband, two sets of twins, and golden retriever Pancake. When she's not pursuing an outdoor adventure, Ali's less healthy passions include ice cream, coffee, and beer.

This book started off interesting but quickly became less and less enjoyable. First off, for most of the book the reader is oblivious as to why Ryker Black basically runs the whole place (Stark Springs) and this is supposed to be the main element of the plot according to the blurb. Instead most of the plot is taken up by the main character Roxie wondering what is going on and 'rebelling' against Ryker's reign. I also was annoyed with the ending as Roxie gets together with Ryker even though all throughout the book he treats her like s***. Overall, this was a disappointing read.

I've actually have reread this book and I'm glad I did I can not wait for the next book in the series

Roxie has got a place at stark academy but is it going to be what she hoped for Ryker is the leader of stark academy but what's his game can Roxie follow the rules or will she fight them or quit .

1. I will say right off the back that I do not like Ryker Black. I know that it was kind of the point of the story, but I found his behaviors manipulative, rude, and ultimately mentally abusive. Run, Roxie. Run as fast as you can. I do not condone his behaviors and therefore I cannot ship their "romance".
2. That being said, I did find Black Diamond pretty enjoyable. I love stories about boarding schools (Harry Potter and The Gallagher Girls are prime examples) so I really enjoyed reading about a special school for winter athletes. I thought the skiing scenes were well written and taught me a little more about the sport.
3. I love the friends that Roxie makes at her new school. Monica, Ingrid, Misha, and Liam all made me smile. They were fun side characters to read about. Some of the awkward things Ingrid said made me laugh.
4. Roxie was a lovely protagonist. She's surprisingly self aware and just generally comes off as a good person. She's tested a lot in this story by Ryker and The Posse (um, yeah. Kind of a silly name) but she handles her bullies like a bad ass and show's them that she is fierce and won't give up. I also enjoyed how she seemed to actually care about her other students.
5. I know there are more books in the series. I love this world that Ali Dean has created so I'm very tempted to pick up the next books. But I also find Ryker to be kinda awful. Sure, he was nice to Roxie in the end of this book but that doesn't make up for how he treated her for most of the school year.
P.S. Guys like that don't deserve nice girls. *shaking my head*
P.P.S. If you like fiction about sports and athletes, make sure to also check out Ali Dean's Pepper Jones series! I've only read the first book so far but I'm excited to start the second one soon. :)
