Cake A Love Story: A Cake Series Novel (The Cake Series Book 1) Kindle Edition
2018 Audie Award Finalist in Romance
“A once in a life time love.” – Dominic C
A reclusive rock star going through the motions
Jake McKallister might have been a rock star, but he was no ordinary one. Surviving an unspeakable crime as a young teen had shaped him into a guarded workaholic, and he now lived his life trying to forget. If it hadn’t been for music and the redemption he found through it, he might not have survived. Career success came easily for him. Personal connections did not.
A vivacious college student embracing life
When outspoken and fun-loving Casey Caldwell was paired with the famously reserved musician for a friend’s wedding, she was prepared for the worst. What could they possibly have in common? She was a bubbly talker; he was a media-shy loner. His life was filled with music; she couldn’t carry a tune. She’d enjoyed a happy childhood; his was a well-publicized nightmare.
Their worlds are about to collide
Despite their obvious differences, Jake and Casey found each other, and her light balanced out his darkness. Would their love be strong enough to survive the weight of his tragic past?

Jake may be a famous Rockstar, but inside him lives two different people. Tha famous star and the scared haunted boy. He's never spoken of what happened to him when he was kidnapped at 13, but he bares both physical and mental scares from the days he spent in captivity. He doesn't date, and women to him are just to scratch an urge. This is because his demons won't let him have more. But Casey came into his life like a hurricane. He'd never met a woman like her, and the chemistry between them was instant. They spent most of their time laughing and became inseparable. She joined him on tour for the summer, and their relationship kept growing in leaps and bounds. But Jake's past just wouldn't let go of him, and soon it became too much to hide, and they rushed back to the surface to destroy everything he'd built. The only difference this time around is that he had someone in his corner who would rather burn with him than let him walk through the fire alone.
Would Casey be enough to bring him back from the hold the darkness has on him, or would he let then win and lose everything.
Definitely Recommend Reading 📚
This story brings them together with an entertaining punk by Casey our heroine. He's stunned by her, amazed that she teases and pushes his buttons to make him really smile and laugh like he hasnt in an age.
Jack is gorgeous and full of mental pain but wants to breathe again when Casey wakes him to the possibilities of Love.
The characters and movement of fans around them felt real, the press of fandom upon them true.
CAKE was moreish, it was sweet... and full of bubbly quick witted dialogue. The characters were real, maybe his traumas and huge convey of semis a little over the top, but it doesn't distract from the story.
Do yourself a favour and try this CAKE!
*spoilers*
I really hated that Casey essentially give up her friends, family and career to follow Jake around and this is treated as a happy ending. The meeting of the family really dragged out and was so sickly sweet, everyone gets along famously with everyone leaving dealing with the abuse as the only conflict. The characters start out being complex and interesting and end up oversimplified and dull. They also react to situations in illogical ways. Personally if my partner was anxious about surgery, my first reaction wouldn't be 'why didn't you tell me, let's cancel it'.
I think this writer has a lot of potential, but they're not there yet. This is not a 5 star book. I'll be keeping an eye out for future work though.

Cake a Love Story is so awesome. One minute you will be laughing the next you will need Kleenex . You won’t want to put it down.
Well I have to go , I’m going to go read it again.

Wow!! I had heard many good things about this story but after reading the blurb and reading other reviews I also knew that this was more than just a story about a hot, brooding rock star, this was also a story about a guy who was kidnapped as a young teenager and who had been abused and had suffered during that time. So I was a bit afraid that this story would be a dark one but to my great surprise that wasn’t the case!!! To be honest, I caught myself smiling during a huge part of the story. Yes, there were some emotional scenes in it but nothing really dark ( or at least that is my personally view).
‘Cake’ is a new adult story, the main characters are in their early twenties and you get both POV’s. Just like the main man character Jake, this story is a bit of a contradiction in many ways. For one, the main characters Jake and Casey meet during a wedding, their connection is almost instant and during those two days their connection become deeper and deeper but even though it happens so quickly, the way the story is told, it also felt a bit like a slow burn because the writer really took her time to describe those two days (and I liked that!). Later the story went a bit faster and then again a bit slower. But during it all, the writing really felt fluent and I enjoyed it very much.
The female main character Casey had a wonderful sense of humour, she’s also very honest, intelligent, sensitive and very down to earth. I liked her very much! In Jake she found someone who had the same kind of humour and he may be super famous but Jake was also down to earth, serious, strong, kind, hard-working and also vulnerable in his own way. The banter between those two was amusing. The connection between them was honest, intense and sweet in some way. Of course, it wasn’t all smiles and sunshine in the story. There were moments where Jake was quiet and struggling with his past and emotions. But it was never too dark and I also think it’s normal after what happened to him.
I thought that the writer did a great job of giving us more insight into what happened to Jake as a teenager. It was revealed to us and Casey slowly through little things and conversations.
The secondary characters were great! Jake and Casey’s family brought more humour into the story. Especially Jake’s brothers and Casey’s brother. I really liked both families.
The only thing that I was a bit surprised about was the end. I liked the epilogue very much! That wasn’t the problem but just before the epilogue there was a very emotional scene and for me, personally, the change from that emotional chapter to the epilogue felt a little bit abrupt. I still liked the ending but it felt like the story went from slow burn to fast burn in one moment.
But I’m really happy that I decided to give this story a try and I will definitely try the other stories in this series too.

I don’t remember the last book that gave me this giddy, butterflies-in-my-stomach feeling. There were sooo many scenes that made me go “awwwh” and grin like a fool. It was just too sweet and cute and funny! OMG, was this book funny! The dialogue was hilarious! Casey cracked me up, she was hysterical! But Jake totally ran with it and gave back as good as he got. The banter between them was the best part of the book for me. It was perfect in showing their growing affection and chemistry. I kept thinking “Yes, that’s how I want couples to get to know each other”. I really wanted to give the author a high-five for not taking the usual approach of insta-lust that most NA books are based on nowadays but base their attraction on genuine liking.
In most romances the sexual tension is the most important factor around which the author centers the whole relationship. And don’t get me wrong, as long as I feel that the couple has something more in common than being compatible in bed I’m fine with that. But here it was so much more than chemistry with a little witty banter. They were talking, talking, talking. About things they liked or disliked, about their opinions on all kinds of stuff, about their life, about everything. And all in a teasing and affectionate manner that was just too cute! Because of all that talking they were getting to know each other pretty well in a relatively short amount of time. But their first two days together spanned so many chapters that their time together felt a lot longer. And thus I never got the impression that their relationship was rushed. Besides, I could totally see that these two were made for each other. I was never even for a moment wondering what each of them saw in the other. Often in these kind of stories I wonder why the famous hero falls in love with the heroine because I can’t see what makes her so special to stand out among the hundreds of women he’s met. This was so not the case here! From the get go I knew that these two were perfect together. They had the same kind of humor and they just clicked. It made perfect sense to me. I also loved both of their families, they were a riot! And surprisingly, the more serious parts of the story worked well with the overall humorous feel of the book.
If there is anything to criticize it would probably be the info dump that occurred a few times, but really only a few. Once or twice Jake or Casey would reminisce about their thoughts and feelings a little too long for my taste. A seasoned author would have probably incorporated those parts into the dialogues. But I know how hard it is to write good dialogue and have it flow naturally and at that the author excels!
So, overall I have no real complaints. The book gave me all the feels, made me swoon and laugh and really feel for the characters. J. Bengtsson will go on my auto-buy list and I can’t wait for her next book!
