I enjoyed this story that is part of a new series, A Texas Lawkeeper Romance, by a group of talented authors. Each story in the series will read as a stand-alone and can be read in any order. The stories will all feature law enforcement heroes and the women who love them. The stories are sweet, clean based stories where the lawman finds his woman. Each will read as a stand-alone book.
Life isn’t always black and white, and this story is a great example of that truth. Siblings, Elias and Emily Jessup, are on their own after their parents kicked Elias out, Emily left with him. But they were struggling, starving to death, no clothes, no job, and no prospects. What starts out as just a means to survive, becomes one more mark and another theft. Some of their targets weren’t good people, many of the men were braggarts, but stealing is stealing.
Elias would play the town, listening in saloons, playing poker, and find their next big mark and then Emily would lure him in, and Elias would be ready to help himself to the money, and they would ride away on their horses. Even though Emily hated doing it, she played along. But when she warns Elias they need to go, that there was a bounty hunter there, he won’t listen, and it will be their downfall.
The plot will have their plans to be their downfall. The mark will be a clever man, and he plans to enjoy Emily even when she fights him off, and Elias tries to protect her. Emily always warned, no guns, but this time it will take a life. That isn’t the only one near, so is Cade Singleton, bounty hunter, after the Jessups. Emily will be captured but not before she has been thrown to the ground and drug through horse manure. Elias will get away, but will he come after them to help Emily or save his own hide?
“Bounty hunter and criminal, she thought with a sense of dread. No matter what changed, he was tasked with bringing her to justice. Plain and simple.”
“I will admit that you are pretty when your eyes glare daggers at me. C’mon, little thief. I think our evening is over.”
“He had a job to do and would do it at any cost. She felt so defeated, so betrayed. In her mind, they’d had a breakthrough. He’d seemed so lively, so tender and passionate.”
The closer they get to Dallas, the more Emily frets about her future, will she hang? Will she be sentenced to prison? She knows she is guilty, but that doesn’t stop her heart from pounding and fear from taking over. She tries to reason with Cade, but he is a sworn officer of the courts and has a job to do.
“What am I going to do with you, my lovely little thief? I would think that you could trust me. Be brave, my little thief.”
The story has several twists and turns in the plot, and the ending comes with not one, but two big surprises. Maybe there is leniency and redemption for Emily and Elias. Maybe, just maybe, repentance will be granted, and forgiveness received. Maybe there is a gray area that has a different form of justice and second chances for those caught between right and wrong.
