A View From My Seat: My Baseball Season With The Jumbo Shrimp Kindle Edition

3.7 out of 5 stars 26 ratings

Horror and Crime Fiction Author Armand Rosamilia loves baseball.

He grew up in a baseball family. He loves watching it. Studying it. Getting lost in it.

When his wife mentioned getting season tickets for the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp, the Double-A affiliate of the Miami Marlins, he jumped on it.

And a nonfiction book idea was born. His love of baseball and a season of minor league baseball.

He not only breaks down the entire 2017 Jumbo Shrimp season but gives his own perspective as a fan and tells stories from his own past as a baseball fan... going to the infamous Pine Tar Game... being a diehard Red Sox fan... the 1993 World Series... Brooks Robinson's final game... collecting baseball cards and so much more!

Features interviews with Jumbo Shrimp staff and players, too:

“We want you to leave here and feel like you had a great affordable experience. You can go home with some money still in your wallet. That’s a very important thing. It also hopefully makes you want to come back for more” – Ken Babby, owner of your Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp

“We were definitely expecting an increase in attention. The sales and the amount of repeat customers exceeded our expectations. I was blown away” – Noel Baha, Assistant GM

“What we’re trying to do here in Jacksonville is help the Marlins win in Miami” – Roger Hoover, Director of Broadcasting

“You can’t think about looking ahead because this game is tough. It has different ways of bringing you up and bringing you down. If you get on the field and give it everything the rest falls into place” – John Norwood, right field

“We have an advantage with the crowds we get. How loud this place gets when we have success and the other team doesn’t” – Alex Yarbrough, infield

“I’m looking for an extra one percent from these players. One percent better per month. Everyone has different things they need to get a little better at. It’s why we’re here in the minor leagues” – Storm Davis, pitching coach and Jacksonville native

A really entertaining, and surprisingly moving, diary of one season of a minor league baseball team (the Class AA affiliate of the Miami Marlins) that is actually the story of the author's family and their generational passion for the game. Armand adores the Red Sox, Dad is a Tigers fan and Mom followed the (hated) Yankees. But it was when the author bought season tickets for the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimps that we see the intimate details of why this game is so addictive and how it is a major part of his life, his marriage, and, yes, the human experience. Filled with testimonials from his family and lots of interesting interviews with players, coaches and front office staff, this book inspired me to buy a bunch of tickets for my own, local minor league team (the Jupiter Hammerheads, Class A Advanced affiliate of the Marlins)!

As a very casual baseball fan, I found this book to be quite charming in a variety of ways. I will say up front that it was a bit of a slow burn for me, with the second chapter specifically feeling a bit unfocused and overwrought, particularly after the fairly-strong opening that preceded it. That said, I'd definitely encourage potential readers to stick with this one as it does build a nice, more-consistent momentum from the third chapter onward. From that point, it frequently and pleasantly transitions between accounts of the games in the 2017 Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp minor league baseball season, some often-heartwarming anecdotes from the author's lifelong love affair with the sport, and some engaging, insightful, and at times revealing interviews with members of the aforementioned organization.

I do feel compelled to point out that I did spot a few technical errors, somewhat awkwardly-worded passages, and instances of seemingly-unintentional repetition that might occasionally leave readers scratching their heads for a moment until they're able to derive the author's intent but I don't personally feel they are plentiful or significant enough to meaningfully detract from the overall experience. Moreover, they don't strike me as being particularly shocking given the sheer volume of names, statistics, and topics present throughout the book.

All things considered, I'd call this a generally-strong, solid, worthwhile read that would likely be at least somewhat compelling for any baseball fan, or anyone with an interest in learning more about the sport, its history, the fandom surrounding it, or the inner workings of the minor league system in general or the Jumbo Shrimp in particular.

Armand takes us along a fun and insightful journey through a season of the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp, a AA affiliate of the Miami Marlins. Even though I know a lot about minor league baseball (my two sons each played for several years), this book was a delight for me because it reveals a truly devoted fan's perspective. After buying season tickets, Armand and his wife become devoted fans, attending every home game (and many on the road). They get to know the players and staff at the stadium, and have us all rooting for the team. He intertwines the game commentary and results with interviews with the players and staff, and even gives us an insight into his childhood experiences with the game of baseball. Great job!

Received the book, and just started reading it. So far it beats my expectations on content, I just wish the presentation was a little better. The cover art and reproduction looks amateur. It looks like something someone printed in their home and then trimmed and mis-centered the cover when they published it. The book would look far better if professionally packaged.

A lifetime fan of major league baseball chronicles a full season of the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp minor league baseball team including interviews with players and members of the front office. Stories from the author's personal life history following the majors help provide perspective.

A interesting book on baseball. Mix of personal stories with the day to day of a AA baseball team-Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp. The love of the game drips off every page with the back and forth of daily stats to heart-filled tales of fantastic games. Began reading it at a fast pace and thought I'd finish it in a day, but took to heart the pacing of baseball and slowed it down to make it last (five days not one). The book is meant to take some time and ingest over time like any good game. A great storyteller since it made me care about a team I never heard of.

This is fun baseball book. But more importantly, it is an ode to fandom.
