ML Hamilton has been teaching high school English and journalism in Central California for the last 30 years. Teaching students to appreciate literature has made her career rewarding; however, she always dreamed of publishing her own novel.

That dream came true. Her first novel, Emerald, was published by Wild Wolf Publishing in 2010. In the summer of 2011, she published her first contemporary fiction, Ravensong, and six months later, launched the Peyton Brooks' series. The Avery Nolan Adventures and Peyton Brooks, FBI launched in 2014. In 2016, she ventured into the cozy mystery craze with her cozy mystery series, Zion Sawyer Cozy Mysteries.

Between teaching and writing, she spends her free time walking her canine children, Bailey and Jessami, and visiting her first grandbaby, Zoey. She is the president of Northern California Publishers and Authors.

How did she do it? How did Hamilton manage 596 pages of carefully wrought, beautiful, flawless writing? Working on this book must have been a labour of love--no doubt about that. This is a fascinating good versus evil story--a theme that has consumed man since the beginning of time. The characters are remarkable, starting with the hero Kai who one instantly takes to. Hamilton writes with a powerful driving force that makes the reader want to read on and on, despite the hundreds of pages between the eyes and the finish line. Such absorbing, compulsively readable, profoundly moving writing certainly deserves a place on the bestsellers' lists. But don't take my word for it--read it and see for yourself! Delight the mind, the imagination, the emotions for this story will move and shake you, it will make you cry, make you dream, it will make you believe again in the ideals you once possessed but lost somewhere along the line for it underscores the fact that the human spirit (and that of the Stravad) knows no limitations.

This book just goes to show the power of a good cover, what hooked me was the giant cobra, the skulls and a barbarian about to pilfer a giant emerald. Got to love that. The book itself reminds me of the old Fighting Fantasy books that I used to read as a teenager. In those books you would take on the role of the barbarian, wizard, professional thief or what-not, and then it would say:- do you choose the magic knife turn to page 38; or do you take the magic shield, turn to page 59. In the same way, Emerald puts the reader firmly in the shoes (or in this case probably furry boots) and lets us experience the adventure first hand. For all those other authors out there who think that fantasy is about beating us about the head with Shakespearean language and unintelligible plots, I they take a leaf from Hamilton's book and write great straight-forward fantasy. Not so much a diamond in the rough, more a emerald in the rough.

After many unsuccessful attempts trying to receive this book as a giveaway, I gave up and bought it for my Kindle. I am so glad that I did.

I really loved this book!!! If allowed, I would give this a 4.5 rating. As I have said before, I really appreciate a well written book. There were only a few instances that I had to re-read a sentence due to an error or a stylistic choice. I loved that this book, in its 596 pages, provided satisfying resolutions to each major storyline. When I read this many pages, I don't want to wait a year for the sequel. The stand-alone quality of this book had me wanting to downgrade the rating I have given many other books.

The Prologue caught me hook, line and sinker. After reading it, I had high hopes. I wasn't disappointed. However, it did take me a few chapters to really get into the story. Once that happened, I spent many a night reading until the wee hours of the next morning. Immediately upon finishing this book, I downloaded and began reading the next in the series. Much to my son's annoyance, I haven't gone to see the Hunger Games movie because I've wanted to keep reading. (Because of his age, he can't see it until I do.)

The author successfully brought the story to life. Even though I found aspects of the story to be predictable, they were not distracting or unfulfilling. I became so completely invested in the characters. I cared about what happened to them, I journeyed with them, I wanted to slap them, I was filled with anxiety and fear for them, I even cried with them. Overall, I found the journey to be completely satisfying. I can't wait to see where the author takes me in the sequel.

For book 1 in a new series I was hooked. There was adventure, some scary stuff and slight romance. I say slight because there are no real love scenes in it, which is the way I like a book. The main character is ok but the other characters are the ones who win me over, from the Daman servant to Kiameron to the Stravad leader and his friends. And Cy who captured my heart in this book, he has to fight what he has known his entire life and has become his own person and fights to keep himself on the right path. I laughed and cried with this book.
