About the author

A small town girl with a big imagination, Tamara Hughes had no idea what to do with her life. After graduating from college, she moved to a big city, started a family and a job, and still struggled to find that creative outlet she craved. An avid reader of romance, she gave writing a try and became hooked on the power of exploring characters, envisioning adventures, and creating worlds. She enjoys stories with interesting twists and heroines who have the grit to surmount any obstacle, all without losing the ability to laugh. Christopher wants nothing more than to find out who murdered his best friend, and to bring the culprit to justice. He meets Rebecca at a ball he attended only for the purpose of gathering information. He finds her refreshingly unaffected by social status, and endearingly attractive. He cannot resist the attraction and is determine to pursue her—that is, until evidence points to her involvement in his friend's murder. I won't say anymore, except that I really enjoyed this fast-paced, historical romance/mystery and suspenseful tale set in New York in the 1800's. READ IT!
As a historical romance, it was average at most. It doesn’t mean this was an awful read (rest assured by now you would clearly know if this was). The writing was good and the story had a nice pace to it where you didn’t feel the story was stuck in a certain scene or it took its time to develop its plot. The main characters of Rebecca and Christopher had some depth to them. You were able to glean the kind of people they were and it was very easy for you to root for them. The author, Tamara Hughes, managed to create some chemistry between them. At the most, you can believe of the existence of a mutual attraction between Rebecca and Christopher. If you are someone who likes their historical romance to have sizzling love scenes, then you may be a little disappointed with this book. While there is sex, it was of the lukewarm variety with short span of time focused on it (this is obviously relative to each individual’s tastes so this statement is to be taken in consideration of my own; another can have a vastly different opinion on this aspect of the book).
While this book was not horrible, I have to say that I couldn’t put it on the top of my list of historical romances. There are other books in the genre that come to mind in which I felt were more compelling, better written and all around more entertaining. But at the time that I read this book, it did a sufficient enough job to preoccupy me for a couple of hours and gave me a read that gave me a break from having to spin my wheels and pulling at my heartstrings.
The hero and heroine fought their love for each other right to the end, but love finally won out. I was very happy about that.
I was first disappointed that this story wasn't on the high seas, but nonetheless as I read the book my interest grew and I couldn't put it down.
Excellent story, thank you for writing it.
She comes off slightly better, she goes from him being a stranger to kissing him and wanting more. There is little in the romance department because either seem to suit each other. Lovemaking, outside of marriage, heat level 4 out of 5.
We have some suspense, twists, villains galore, no romance and a bumpy road to HEA. No cheating, no cliffhanger, likable epilogue, no romance and a tad of spice. (ljb)
