The world of Silverton is different from most of the other fantasy worlds out there. Ivy, as she preferred people to call her, is a complex character. Part Satyr, part Demon, and part Guardian, she reached her "maturity" at age 25, came into her sexual and other powers, and became best friends with a vampire Florian and his sister Julia who appears to be a real fantasy writer (this is a first... I won't spoil the suspense and say who), and bonded with a werewolf alpha named Parker and his pack. She was still dealing with her history of abduction and enslavement from age 19 to 21 by the demon overload Lathan. Every chapter took an unexpected turn but the turns were somehow justified by those that transpired. It is hard to imagine this story with all these twists coming from imagination alone, no matter how vivid. Only some form of reality can yield such plot complexity because imagination usually follows expectations while reality is often surprising. The characters were vividly constructed. The seduction scenes were clearly heart felt. The satirical rationale behind the sexual encounters was convincing, as well as the practical female dislike of doing it in dark alleys and in the woods. There is plenty of action. Ivy is an attractive, strong, and independent woman.

Four stars because this book started out confusing me. I had a really hard time wrapping my brain around the world that Ivy, Florian and the gang inhabit and the first couple chapters left me feeling like this should have been book two. So much happens to Ivy before the book even starts, I felt like I was missing stuff. Don’t know if the author reads her reviews but there could definitely be a prequel. Just sayin. That said, I hung with it and was very glad I did. The world finally comes into view, everything starts making sense and there’s a ton of action and drama (and some steamy scenes) to make putting the book down difficult. I admit, I’m used to reading stories with strong, tough as nails female leads, and someday Ivy will be that lead, but she’s not there yet. This book is about her learning about herself - her strengths, weaknesses (she’s got a lot of them!), how to accept help and how to use what she’s got. The cast of characters that support her are well developed, likable (and hot!). The writing/grammar is good, there were some timeline issues for me, but I feel that the author will be able to work them out as she goes along. I’ve already purchased book two and definitely recommend this read. If the first couple chapters confuse you, keep going, it gets better.

Overall it was an ok story. There were some parts that were predictable (not giving away spoilers), but there was one part, fairly early in the book that was just completely unbelievable. The main character was kidnapped and torchered for 2 years. She escaped, but she knew that the ceature that kidnapped her wanted her back and has minions in her world that could do it. So, she is in the corridor where her office is, she senses that there is someone coming up behind her but she doesn't look to see who it is? The person comes up and injects her with some toxin that makes her plyable. Now, I have never been kidnapped, let alone torchered, but that kind of bravado/carelessness just doesn't fit. Later on she mentions her paranoia? yeah, no. I realize it was a means to then introduce another character, but there needed to be something that didn't scream "This would never happen". Frankly, with that kind of carelessness, she isn't safe anyplace.
The vampire was funny.
The whole pack thing was odd.
I think that with what she was trying to project, the whole business with Waylan should have ended early in the book. If you tell someone not to call you something and there reply contains the word you asked them not to call you, I have walked away from people like that.
It ended a bit predictably but the main character showed some decent spunk. At the moment, I don't know if I'm going to get book 2 or not, probably not for a long wile anyway.

Okay, I admit this one was a little simplistic, insomuch as the heroine had really convenient things happen which saved her on more than one occasion, but I have to say, the author pulled the plot together so well, I was willing to overlook some of the stuff I normally would roll my eyes over. Good characters and a fast pace kept the story moving forward, even when I wanted to kick Ivy's butt for not being able to decide between her pick of men. The bad guy was fairly obvious, but there was always a tad of doubt, so I consider this one a win. I'd be interested to see what happens next in this series.

All in all an enjoyable read. There was a point where it went from normal to raging hormones super quick which really threw me off guard, and it took me a minute to catch up, but the author made it work. Then the ending just about had me throwing my kindle against the wall, but Ivy came to her senses and ended up with the guy I felt she belonged with. I'm really looking forward to reading the rest of this series but really hope it goes back to being with Ivy as the main character. Which don't get me wrong I liked Flo, but I need to know more about Ivy and what will be happening to her in the future.

Ivy has a lot on her plate, and for once, not even Florian, her vampire BFF, can make her troubles go away. Will her old captor, the demon Lathan, get his hands on her again? Which of the new men in her life are true, and which dangerous? And what's the deal with the statue anyway?

This book is page-turner. A mentally stimulating whodunnit crossed with a coming-into-powers tale is presented with wit, sensuality and a lot of heart. I loved it, and can't wait for the next one.
