Topaz Aevos can make things fall with a single glance. Of all the random and bizarre powers that she and her three sisters were born with, hers is clearly the most useless. That is, until New Year’s Eve. When high school senior Stryder Black executes a cruel joke, Taz uses her powers, and all hell breaks loose. Stryder’s ill-fated prank lands him straight into a curse—one meant to teach him a lesson. Desperate for help, Stryder unwittingly drags Taz into the curse with him. Now both are forced to relive the same fragment of their lives over and over. But something goes deadly wrong. Not only is their loop mysteriously shrinking, Taz learns that Stryder is harboring a dark secret. Is his murky past the key to helping them escape…or will their time run out?

Early on, Jodi Perkins sets the tone for “Chasing Echoes” as Topaz—Taz for short—starts to lay things out, “It all starts because of a rat.” With relatable characters that will have you laughing, awing, and rooting all the way to the end, Perkins has set the bar high for both young adult and urban fantasy books.

Perkins’ story is the youthful misadventures of Stryder Black, bully and emotionally disgruntled teenage boy, and Topaz Aevos, the semi-average girl with some pretty interesting powers. They’ve known each other most of their lives, but they haven’t really known each other—being more or less aware of the other, but not involved.

Of course, following the “rat incident” things start to take a turn for the weird. Both Taz and Stryder carry around a lot of baggage, not little of it self-inflicted. Perkins adds several layers for all of her characters as strange events start to take place around town, including a very tragic shooting. But when Stryder finds himself “cursed,” and Taz inadvertently joins the curse, they’ll have to work together before they run out of time.

Perkins creates a very believable world with fine attention to detail. The pacing is a little slow in parts, but this musical read is hard to put down. The struggles and obstacles that face Stryder and Taz are emotional, passionate, and well told. I don’t want to spoil anything, but Perkins was able to build to one of my all-time favorite story tropes in such a way that I never saw it coming, and I’m still in awe of the mastery.

In “Chasing Echoes”, Jodi Perkins debuts impressive skill in storytelling built around two interesting and very real characters. Readers will get to see some fascinating depth, as the plot builds to a very satisfying and surprising conclusion.

In Chasing Echoes the author combines three story concepts; time looping, super powers and coming of age, to make an interesting story.

I’ve always liked time travel stories, of which time looping is a subset. Off the top of my head I can think of 9 or 10 time looping movies, with Groundhog Day being my all time favorite. I’ve seen it so many times I can recite almost every line in that movie.

Chasing Echoes has something in common with Groundhog Day. The main character in both stories must change something about themselves in order to break out of their time loops. The common theme is that the main character must change his egocentric personality into a more kinder and caring person.

Though there is a small difference between the two stories. In Groundhog Day we don’t know why Phil Connors in particular is forced into his time loop, but in Chasing Echoes we know the Who and why. In both stories the loop is broken only when some mysterious entity is satisfied enough to end it.

Chasing Echoes takes the time loop concept a little deeper and goes where Groundhog Day never did. In this story the main characters consider the ramifications of the time loop from the perspective of the secondary characters (those outside the loop).

This was an enjoyable read with a satisfying ending.

I've been in a book slump lately and anything that I've read throughout it ended up being disappointing.... until Chasing Echoes. I was really surprised how much I loved this book and how drawn into it I became. Jodi Perkins writes beautifully in-depth and believable characters and a greatly crafted world in which they live.

Topaz and Stryder are fantastic main characters! I loved being with them on their adventure and seeing their relationship change and grow as time went on (pun intended... maybe :P ) Stryder showed such great character growth and that's one of the things that makes me fall in love with a book.

Perkins never tells the reader anything in her writing, but let's the characters actions and thoughts truly drive the story and their growth. There's nothing "insta" about this which is so wonderful. There's true development that sets this apart from so many books out there. The story is full of so much action, intrigue and twists, all amazingly tied together for a truly cohesive experience.

Based on her blog I know she's not elbow deep in the sequel yet and as much as I want to live in this world again as soon as possible, I'll wait until she knows she can do it justice. In the meantime, I'll be keeping a close eye on future releases! And thank you for giving me a great world and story to get lost in, it helped remind me there are worthwhile books out there still.

With her book Chasing Echoes, Jodi Perkins takes the readers on an amazing journey of conflicts, special powers, self-discovery, and tension-filled situations. Jodi deserves full credit for writing a memorable romance book which relies on clean and pure emotions of its characters, instead of using repeated doses of unnecessary sex scenes that many of today's writers use as a device to make up for their lack of writing talent. That's why Jodi's talent as an author becomes even more apparent in this book. I would be looking forward to reading more books from Jodi.

The conflict of Taz and Stryder is at the centre of the story, caught in a time loop that's shrining fast, good enough to make reader's heart beat go even faster. Every now and then while reading the book, just when I thought that Jodi had hit the peak of her story and thought it couldn't be kept at the level, she proved me wrong and kept creating new peaks. Truly an extraordinary story created with characters who seem so real as though they are part of your friend circle!

The range of genres this book expands to is simply outstanding. This book is highly recommended to the readers seeking a page turner in romance, mystery, fantasy, or time travel.

I hesitated to read this book because the description seemed weird and not that interesting. Boy am I GLAD I read it anyway!!! Most books these days are predictable, re runs of hundreds of other books out there. While time travel and curses aren't unique, the details and characters of this story made it UNIQUE.
An extremely well written alternative to groundhog day.

Initially I was sceptical that this book might be some one another teenage drama, but it turned out much more than that. Beautifully scripted characters, great storyline n intriguing plot. Five star rating from me.

5.0 out of 5 stars A very interesting and well written story

A very interesting story! Very often, time travel or loops start at some point to go wrong but here it was very plausible. The characters were real and relatable.
A bit too descriptive in the beginning and the end was a bit too stretched for my liking (maybe it just felt like that because I wanted to go to bed but not before finishing the book).
At some point the narrative (3rd person but alternating following the two main characters) confused me as it wasn't always quickly established who's telling.
But this didn't have an impact on the impression of this 5 star read.

4.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant but let down by shoddy editing
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on September 16, 2020
I thought this was brilliant - well-developed and quirky characters, fresh and intriguing plot, well-written. However, the editing was shocking. In one instance, a character 'slammed on his breaks' while driving his truck. Luckily, the book was otherwise so outstanding that I continued reading it but it did bother me...
