Editorial Reviews

From the Author

Sandy's changed our lives for the better, and this little series is a tribute to her, and to rescue dogs everywhere.

About the Author

Following a career of over thirty years in the British Army, Deb and her husband moved to Cyprus to become weather refugees (she hates cold weather).

Her books include the 'Afterlife' series, written from a dead woman's point of view and consists of six books so far. Deb's also written children's books about 'Jason the Penguin' and Barry the reindeer ('Reindeer Dreams'). 'The Island Dog Squad' series is suitable for teens and adults and is told by Sandy the rescue dog. It was inspired by the real-life Sandy, adopted in 2018. As well as the Afterlife series, books for more mature readers include the 'Unlikely Soldiers' series, and 'Court Out', Deb's novel about netball players. The wacky 'Alien's Guide' series is more suitable for young adults/adults due to the nature of some of the scenes.
Her non-fiction book, 'Zak, My Boy Wonder', is written from a mother's point of view and was co-written with Joanne Lythgoe. It's the true story of her son's abandonment by the authorities, the fight for his survival against all odds, and acceptance in a society obsessed by perfection.

Deb spends her time writing, hanging out with Allan and Sandy, and avoiding housework.

Full content visible, double tap to read brief content.

During her downtime Deb likes escaping from reality (and housework) to the bondu. This is where her characters and their stories are born.

She enjoys writing in different genres and this could be the reason why she’s not a New York Times best seller yet (though there could be lots of other reasons too.) Deb’s series include the supernatural suspense Afterlife books, the first of which was inspired by ants, Unlikely Soldiers (based on some of her experiences in the British Army) and The Island Dog Squad series of novellas. She’s also written children’s books about Jason the penguin and Barry the reindeer, a novel about netball players, as well as a non-fiction book about a boy born to be different (co-written with Zak’s Mum, Joanne). There are also two novels in the Aliens Guide series. Her latest books, The Island Expats, are cosy mysteries set on the fictional island of Souvia.

Her current work in progress is a fun read (not) about how she coped with cancer.

Deb’s husband, Allan, is also a weather refugee and they live in Cyprus with their rescue dog, Sandy.

I am so glad I came across this wonderful series about a great group of dogs and their heroic adventures. It’s very hard to remember this is not a true tale of friends always trying to do the right thing, who just happen to be dogs. The author presents the story from the dog’s point of view so realistically. Heartwarming and honest, and a delight to read. Don’t miss out on these books, they are a real treat.

Loved the story line. As a dog person, I love reading stories from the dogs point of view. We as humans have so much to learn from our furry friends. Even though this is fiction a lot of true life is reflected in these stories.

I just love the Island Dog Squad books. I may be a bit too old for them at 60, but they are a wonderful way for me to relax and wind down an evening before going to bed. And I've introduced a young lady of 12 to them and she is now loving them more than I do.

I received a free copy of this book and opted to post a review.

Heartwarming and adventurous, I read this book in almost one sitting (unfortunately, I had to sleep)!

What's not to love about a story narrated by a lovable and laid-back dog like Sandy? If having a lovable dog narrating an adventurous story isn't enough, Sandy and the rest of the pack share their thoughts on anxiety and PTSD. The discussion isn't really deep or involved, but it does affect how they act and is taken into account during their plans to be rid of one of the "Crazies" that threatens humans and dogs in the neighborhood. I really appreciated that the subject was broached with sensitivity, and I loved how supportive the pack is of each other as they cope with their traumas in different ways.

The plot itself has a grand sense of adventure about it. The setting is detailed enough for readers to get a sense of the dogs' environment, but the focus remains primarily on the dogs and their humans. There are a few references to violence and potential abuse; however, readers who could be triggered are spared the details as these references are generalized, and McEwan moves on to a different topic pretty quickly.

Another Crazy Mission is a wonderful continuation of the previous installment, Sandy's Story, that the whole family can enjoy together as it helps to build empathy for humans and dogs.

Fabulous read. Loved the plot, the characters and the writing style. Highly recommended.
She has been told that her human parents are having their niece to stay whilst her mum is in rehab. The squad has also found out that the worst crazie, Henry, is living in town and has already tried to attack several people. Lola comes up with a plan to bring him to heel. However for this to work they need to bring in a fresh member into the squad. Will he agree? As they make their plans Digger runs away. Will their plan work? Why is Digger so upset? Will the niece and Sandy ever make friends? Why do the police do nothing about the complaints regarding the dogs especially the crazies? Add in a fire and puppies for a really terrific read.

I simply love this book series told from the point of view of Sandy the rescue dog.

There is a new threat in the neighbourhood, bringing great danger to humans and animals alike. The Squad have a new recruit in the form of local spy, new to the island with the name of Tulip - a Rottweiler but he tells the girls he's a lover not a fighter.

Tulip's intelligence is vital if the squad are to snub out the threat before disaster strikes, will they succeed?

Another great and often hilarious read, it is hard to know where reality ends and fantasy begins. Very highly recommended.
