A good book and you will want to have read the first one to really know what is going on.
Alador is now living in a city of mages, the more powerful the magic a mage can wield rates his or her standing in the hierarchy, with Alador's ruthless Uncle ruling over all. However murder to improve your position in common practice. Alador not only has to learn how to control his own magic but avoid being killed by just about everyone else! All the while trying to accomplish the desire of the Blue Dragon's geas.
I am looking forward to the next book and am somewhat disappointed not be able to get it yet.
Suitable for tweenies and up.

Having read a fair amount of fantasy books over the last few months, I can confidently say that BLACKGUARD ranks highly amongst its peers. My only regret is that I didn't read the preceding episodes in the THE BLUE DRAGON'S GEAS series. Of course, I can remedy this and will do so at the first opportunity, because this is storytelling of a high standard. Reading other reviews, I see that others have pointed to grammatical concerns, but these do not detract from the overall experience.

To me, world-building is always crucial in any speculative fiction. Author Ms Matthynssens has constructed an complex, beguiling universe, one which I plan to explore more closely. Our protagonist, Alador, finds himself in a heartless world where the strong prosper and the weak are destroyed. If he is to survive and prosper, he must learn new skills, and quickly. I'm a sucker for underdogs, so I loved Alador's personal story. Also, I'm a big fan of political intrigue, and this novel is replete with Machiavellian schemes and dastardly enemies. The plot is intricate, the characterisation astute; there are no real weaknesses. Pacing is perfect, and although this book is close to 500 pages, it read quickly; the pages turned themselves.

If you're into imaginative fantasy with fantastical creatures, dragons and intrigue, THE BLACKGUARD is the book for you. Judging by the plethora of positive reviews garnered by the other episodes in the series, Ms Matthynssens has created a world of Tolkien-esque proportions, with thousands of pages of fantasy excellence on offer. Based on this novel, I recommend you give THE BLUE DRAGON GEAS series a try.

This brilliant follow up to Outcast, the first book in the Blue Dragon's Geas series, delivers more depth and heart than what I was expecting. The character development for Alador and his relationships were just what I was looking for. This book, along with the teaser for the next will keep me waiting with anticipation for the continuation of this story. I have become very interested in all that happens in this world, with all the characters, both the originals and the new additions in this book. I am waiting in great anticipation for where Cheryl will take me in the next installment. I am also hoping to get to know the dragons a bit better.

An excellent second offering from this author and I look forward to many more.

I rarely do a book review but I was frankly surprised that I liked this book so much. Would never have read it, nor its predecessor "The Outcast" if I had not been able to read a sample from my Kindle. I am a 64 year old grandmother and was looking for acceptable reading for my grandchildren. While I did not find it acceptable reading for my grandchildren, I could not stop reading the book myself. There were surprising, simple mistakes in grammar and word usage, which is always a disappointment to me when reading any book. I feel it lends a strong element of a lack of professionalism and these books deserve better. I cannot wait for the next book in the series.

Quite enjoyed the story actually. I think the only flaw I found was they built up the character training and did not give a proper chance to display his skills outside of very small windows.

The focus on his girlfriend I thought was okay and not too over done (in relation to another readers comment) but to each their own I guess. I am a bit torn on what I feel about his current 'sleeping' arrangements but I think the author captures the dilemma perfectly.
