When Evil Comes To Play (The Veil Diaries Book 5) Kindle Edition

4.8 4.8 out of 5 stars 4,243 ratings

My name is Alexis, though everyone calls me Lexie. I’m a Necromancer. I see the dead, talk to them, and help them move on. Well, I used to. Now, with the Veil closed, I’m the only way for a soul to cross over. It’s wearing me out, and according to my doctor, it’s going to kill me.
I don’t know how to tell the guys. I’m working on it, but there is so much going on right now; Isaac’s acting strange, Ethan’s worried that his brother isn’t eating or sleeping, Asher’s dad is back, and Tara is still snooping around my bedroom.
My symptoms are getting worse, and we’re running out of time. For everyone.

Lexie is a Necromancer, a Veil Worker. Currently, she is the only person with the ability to pass souls over. It's taking it's toll on her emotionally and physically. She is a Survivor but she has an expiration date. Her symptoms are getting worse; there are decisions to be made, and she needs to tell her guys. But how? When? Isaac is acting out, Ethan is worried, Asher's dad is back and it's not going well. Zeke will lose his mind.

The Veil Series is unparalleled. Truly, I cannot find fault with this series or this book. That makes writing a review difficult. There are only so many adjectives that anyone wants to read. Lexie is magnificent. She's a bada**, strong, brave, smart, talented, compassionate, and above all loving. With her childhood trauma along with her recent assault, she could be a broken shell. She's anything but. She's determined to live every moment that she is given. She's leaving her mark on the world, those she loves, and those who love her. The only criticism that can be made about her is her reluctance and fear to share and burden others with her problems. Understandable. Each one of the guys is perfection in their own way. Cuddles and conversation, Dancing and kissing. So much to love. And can we talk about Hades! Has there ever been a more incredible dog than Lexie's baby? Simple answer, NO! He's a huge, happy, slobbering, wrinkled wiggling furball of love and protection.

There is so much packed into this amazing book and I am not going to share any of it. Every reader should experience the BL Bliss without spoilers. Just know the storyline is advanced concerning the necromancy and the guys. A crossover introduces Lexie and her guys to the Gargoyles. This brings a wave of new information to them and hopefully brings some control over the local witches. Rory continues to be awesome, while others in the family don't come across quite as good. Every friend gets their moments, some happy, some sad. And some people just can't help but prove that they are not meant to be a part of Lexie's life.

This series, this book has so much to offer; paranormal action, ghosts, magic, drama, tension. This particular one offered up true danger and fear. All-consuming fear. Most important is the friendship, family, and love. I can't get enough of it. The honesty, the admittance, and acceptance of certain feelings, the character's authenticity make this series my favorite RH in a genre of sensational series. One last word, those final POV's. WOW!

Review I was writing as I read the first 60% of the book:

That was the most amazing, gut-wrenching, heart-warming, frustrating rollercoaster of a book!

As usual, B.L. Brunnemer knocked it out of the park. Well written and compelling, with plenty of heart and emotion. Fully realized, three dimensional characters you can't help but care about.

But OH. SO. FRUSTRATING! Because you care about what happens to Lexie, Isaac, Zeke, Miles, Asher and Ethan it is incredibly wrenching to watch things go wrong. To know a wrong turn is being made at that fork in the road. To know that something more is going on that people are just not yet seeing. To know that a lack of communication or a miscommunication is only making things harder.

Frustrating? Hell yes. But also a sign of a great book when it can pull forth such emotion.

I loved the progress with the relationship between Lexie and the guys. I loved seeing how the wider paranormal world from Books of Stone is starting to impact Veil Diaries.

I will admit that this is not my favorite book in the series - in part because it is so difficult to read.

But hell, I just love this series :) And it is going to be a very difficult thing to wait for the next one!

Review I now write after finishing the book:

OMFG! *dancing around like a crazy person*
I think I am having trouble breathing.
I know I am having trouble thinking.
I believe this is my favorite book of the series.
I delighted in all the delicious kisses.
OMFG! *twitching and unable to sit still*
    O M F G...
    THAT. WAS. AWESOME.
When's the next book coming out again?

Holy Hannah this book was amazing! If you've not read any of the others in this series yet, turn around .... don't pass go and IMMEDIATELY pick up book 1. Otherwise you'll be utterly lost in the backstory. Love is the basis of this book. Love of family, love of friends, what will we do to maintain that love? What would we willingly sacrifice? ....and the opposite of love of course is hate.... enter an evil demon. As if helping ghosts cross wasn't getting demanding enough, and now we have possession by frackin demon in the mix?!?! Lexie is already having a rough go of it as this book opens in the doctors office. Looks like her body is showing some major wear and tear from crossing all these souls. She needs to figure something out and FAST. This one is a doozie as we meet some fun new players....templar priests...yup..those Templars LOL... not all kindness and light either smh.... and a fun little group I absolutely ADORE pop in. I had a hunch who they were, so I looked up the book FOUND by B.L. Brunnemer to double check. I recalled getting this book as it's in The Veil world, which to me means spin-off. I just hadn't quite gotten around to reading it yet. I will be solving that problem the moment I'm done with this review hehehe. Ohhhhhh me likey very, very much this group hehehe. I then keep Evelyn and her group will get along famously with Lexie and her guys....and I'm still cackling at the smackdown that cow ...*cough* erm witch Serena (the one Miles found way back when to supposedly "help" Lexie?) Finally gets muahahahaha. Oh how I adore this book. My greedy self I soooooo hoping we get more soon. Lots of action...helping ghosts, fighting demons, fighting old emotional demons, Tara issues, ex boyfriend stuff pops up....mix in a ton of PTSD and it's cake. However the icing....that involves our little gang of Ghostbusters getting closer, Learning to communicate, and maybe getting a few new tricks up their sleeves. NOT for the faint of heart, but my oh my is it worth a read!!!! This series has definitely claimed a HUGE piece of my heart....makes me smile every single time. I cannot wait to see what's next.....ESPECIALLY with all the knowledge and tricks the gang all gained in this book. Things are about to go bananas.....and I can't wait <grin>. Do yourself a HUGE favor and check out these books...

This one book was a walk through the valley of emotions. I was laughing, screaming, crying, loving alongside with Lexie and the Boys.

It seems to me that every book gets better than the later, and even though there was so much going on at the same time it flowed naturally.

Wonderful story, lovely and down to earth characters ...

BL Brunnemer has written an amazing story, so easily to become addicted to.

I simply love the group relationship, the care for one another, the friendship, love and understanding that this story brings with every book. In book 5 we get to know more about the supernatural world and I am hopping that the next book will show more about this fascinating plot. It was great to see the group from Evelyn book and now Lexie knows more about who will help her and that her powers aren’t bad just different from witches. Between us these witches are bad news, so happy when she confronted Serene.
Claire is back! And with surprising news. Can’t wait for the next one!
In the romance part we notice an increase in the guys finally admitting theirs love for her and taking action. Let’s see how this conversation will start and the next agreement that they will reach. Hopping they decide to share in the next one.
The only bad thing about the book is that it is over.

5.0 out of 5 stars Each time I think that eventually like most series
Reviewed in Canada on May 5, 2018
Each time I think that eventually like most series, this will dry up a bit, but no - instead it just keeps getting better and better! Each book the characters get filled out a bit more, and we find out more about their backgrounds and what makes them the way they are. You can tell this is a very well thought out timeline, and not just each book randomly happening after the last with some things thrown in - it is all part of a master plan. This is an author who truly cares about her fans as well, and is very interactive with everyone in her facebook group.
Good story, great characters, a world/terms that are easy to follow along with and not be confused, and new fresh information being revealed all the time!
I would suggest reading the other 4 Veil Diaries book before hand, this is a series that builds upon the previous books! Found: Book of Stone is also helpful to read before this one (the 2 series cross over) as it gives up much more background information, but you can follow this without reading BOS series as well.

5.0 out of 5 stars All-consuming , heartbreaking and addictive in all the best ways
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on May 4, 2018
It took me a while to compose myself and get my brain to start working again so I can actually write a half decent review. :)

Let me start with this, I don't think I've ever cried so much in all my 30 years on this Earth. B.L.Brunnemer is the only author I've read recently making me feel everything her characters are experiencing. I can feel their fear; their strength; their pain; their desire; but most of all, their love. I don't think I've ever held my breath for so long as when I was reading this instalment in the series. Yeah, sure all the other ones were as intense and thrilling but this one, there was something even more special about it - a different kind of torment; a fatality, if you'd like.

And let's face it, we're all bored of reading all those books with HEA that it sometimes puts us off reading for a long time. No fear of such thing happening here. The feeling of always being on edge; fearing to turn the page because as much as it excited us to know what will happen it scared us sh*tless (excuse the bluntness); rooting for our favourite characters as we read about their hopes, dreams and desires; and most of all, each one of us relating to Lexie in one way or another (thank God, I don't see souls or I'll be in a loony bin) because of the tough choices she has to make and the strength she possesses to make them - these are just small bits of what made us fall in love with B.L. Brunnemer's books.

So, I guess I have to end up saying this - I was consumed by every word. My heart stopped beating and restarted itself more time I can count. I didn't get enough and I can wait for the next book in the series to come out. It would definitely be worth the wait!
