An army more terrible than the nation of Grildor ever had to face is suddenly at the Gate, and Maia, with the help of her dragon, Midnight, must face her fears and the challenges of saving her people.
The appearance of Death, however, might derail all her plans. Will the bad omen mean the end of them all, or can Maia overcome that which holds her back from true power?
Find out now in this magical fantasy of an elven princess and the journey to become who she was meant to be. Toni Cox grabs you from the first page and takes you on a rollercoaster ride through a magical kingdom and the evil one princess must stop to save a nation.

I can't believe that I'm the first to review this book. This, a first novel by Toni Cox, is a marvelous tale. The story Cox tells is honest and original although there are faint reverberations that I picked up that definitely reminded me of some other books I've read.
The main character, Maia, is a "young" elf who is blessed with five of the elemental powers that are gifted to elves (and the first with all five in two millennia!). She is a character who develops a great deal before our eyes in the nearly 400 pages of this novel. Maia has just returned from a sojourn on Earth where she completed her "education" which allowed her to reach the pinnacle of the Elemental forces and become a Life Elemental. Of course, her return from Earth (where she was married and had two children) wasn't without challenges and the reader watches the angst Maia experiences because of those challenges. Her life with her horse, dragon, and family is complex as she tries to come to grip with a life unlike anything she expected.
Cox is exquisitely detailed with her settings and her descriptions are definitely thought provoking. There are many passages throughout that I marked because they were so beautifully written. In some cases, like Robert Jordan and G.R.R. Martin, her imagination and word paintings get a little excessive but they certainly do work.
The characterization is superb throughout the novel. Maia's relationship with her families and her mentor, Silas, are marked with wonderful exchanges that are both realistic and memorable. As a young elf, she shows maturity well beyond her years.
It's hard to find a fantasy tale about elves and dragons that is original and works. Cox has certainly done this and it is a delightful read. There were numerous typos (mostly wrong words) that should have been picked up by a competent proof reader and once I forced myself to ignore them, the tale flowed smoothly.
For a first time novelist, Cox has hit a home run with Elemental Rising. I truly look forward to reading the second book in the series.
