About the authors
Susan Yawn Tanner turned her passion for history into a writing career with sweeping historical romances of the American West and Scotland. Her first five historical romances and a novella were published by Leisure Books, an imprint of Dorchester Publishing, during its heyday. They are currently published by Secret Staircase Books, an imprint of Columbine Publishing, as is a sixth historical romance.
In recent years, she mastered the art of the mystery with five fun romantic suspense and two short stories, all of which featured a supersleuth in the form of a feline detective.
Her most recent series brings the descendants of three powerful families from her historical westerns into the present with a blend of mystery and romantic suspense.
When not at her desk, Ms. Tanner—a competitive barrel racer as well as a multi-published author—can usually be found in the barn or on a horse.
Susan Tanner’s latest venture is a ‘soon to be released’ romantic mystery showcasing one smart feline named Trouble. Because Ms. Tanner is a horse lover as well as a cat lover, her upcoming Trouble books will have backstories which feature the world of horses. These books will be part of the Familiar Legacy series written in concert with several very talented authors. Her previous novels were historical romance. Highland Captive, Captive To A Dream, Exiled Heart, Fire Across Texas and Winds Across Texas as well as A Warm Southern Christmas (part of a Christmas anthology), were all published by Leisure Books.

I never expected to get so involved with the characters in a Western novel, but the author brings each one to life with her poignant descriptions of their challenges, joys and sorrows on the dangerous Texas frontier. And the settings are so real: the small town of New Braunfels, the Comanche camp, the Staked Plains and the Army forts, each location pulling the reader into the harsh existence of that time. I could almost feel the dust, hunger, bitter cold and utter desolation of Katherine's exhausting ride in search of her wayward brother, Ford.
She's joined in her quest by Slade, a hardened Texas Ranger seeking revenge against Elzy Rusk, an outlaw who caused the deaths of Slade's young wife and baby son ten years earlier. Their search takes them to a camp of Comanches who had held Katherine in captivity for five years until she was unwillingly rescued, along with the baby daughter of Wolf Killer, the Comanche warrior she had hoped to marry. Wolf Killer wants his daughter back--and Katherine, too.
I won't go into more details, because nothing should spoil this gripping plot with its many dramatic twists and turns. The main story has several interesting subplots as well, along with plenty of nefarious bad guys to vanquish (which Slade does quite skillfully). But the best part of this story is the growing love between Katherine (the outcast "white squaw") and Slade (the bitter, lonely Ranger). Their love scenes are simply exquisite without being overly graphic. Will they come through it all to find their Happily Ever After? Hold your breath, jump in and read this engrossing story to find out. Highly recommended!

Kate was taken captive by Native Americans and grew to love one of their warriors. When she was rescued, she claimed his daughter as her own to save her life.
Slade is looking for the same warrior Kate left to keep him from buying weapons from the man who murdered Slade's first wife and son.
Once Kate and Slade meet it is passion waiting to explode. I will not give you spoilers, but I felt so many emotions reading this book. I felt joy, fear, sadness, and shed more than a couple tears. The pain Kate and Slade had to endure to have their HEA only makes it all the more deserving.
My only issue is that I love epilogues and this book doesn't have one. Other than no epilogue this story was entertaining and wonderfully written. I recommend it to all who want to feel/experience emotions when they read a book. It was a truly excellent read!
