This book was not at all what I was expecting. I knew it would have some darkness but what I didn't know was that it would touch me the way that it did. The things all the characters went through was heartbreaking but also bittersweet. I have always been a firm believer that even had things have a silver lining message. Even if I don't understand at that moment, in hindsight there is a lesson to be learned, whether that comes from New strengths, a new perspective/motivation, or in the people we meet. That was definitely the case in this book.
The author is gifted in her stylistic choices. Even though it hurt to read parts of this, I still felt the emotions and pain as if I was there. I felt the maelstrom of thoughts both good and bad. I experienced everything through their eyes and allowed me to connect with them. Even the way that the author phrased things was beautiful and poignant.
This book deals with some serious triggers for both the main characters but I still want people to take a chance on this book. The more we, as a society, talk about it the sooner we can start doing what is right.
I only had one complaint with the book, concerning Gavin and the explanation of Innes at the end. This says book one but it felt complete to me. I'm wondering if maybe that will be resolved then.

At a loss for words
Wow…..that’s all I can say after finishing this book. I have read more books in the past year, let alone in my lifetime, than I can even recall and have never felt moved to the point of leaving a review. This book, however, needs to be commented on. This book broke my heart in the saddest and most brutal way possible, only to begin mending it so it could shatter it again. The pain and suffering Callan endured is indescribable and horrific. He endured enough pain to bring a small village to their knees, yet he never let it break him. Emery, was his angel bringing light and goodness into his dark and damaged soul. I have never been so speechless after finishing a book but this book left me at a complete loss for words. It’s not for the faint of heart and that is coming from someone who reads primarily DARK dark romances. If you can handle the darkness though, please read this book. It’s one that you will never forget and will stay with you for the rest of your life. I have only read one other novel by Lydia Michael’s but the writing in this book is immeasurable and incomparable. She grabs your heart with a vice-like grip and never lets go of it.This quote shook me so deeply I had to share:“I love ye like Hemingway loves the sea, with enough comprehension to fear it, respect it, and admit that it’s bigger than me by a million miles and too deep to ever know all its secrets. Every dawn I wake, grabbed by the desire to hold it to me. But these hands cannae hold love any more than they can hold the sea.”
