Hurt: A Dark Romantic Thriller Kindle Edition
Callan MacGregor’s tortured past is awakened when the woman he secretly loves is brutally attacked. His heart will not rest until vengeance is served. Bestselling author, Lydia Michaels, delivers a devastatingly dark psychological thriller that haunts and hypnotizes.
Violence made me vicious and my sins are too many to count.
When I look at her, I’m reminded of everything that is good and pure in this world. My redemption is hopeless, so I keep my distance, fighting the temptation to get closer to her, even when her eyes invite me in. Everyone I love eventually disappears, so I must keep my distance to keep her safe. It is the price I pay for the ruthless horrors I’ve committed.
Until I see her hurt. Now nothing, not even my past, could keep me away.

The author is gifted in her stylistic choices. Even though it hurt to read parts of this, I still felt the emotions and pain as if I was there. I felt the maelstrom of thoughts both good and bad. I experienced everything through their eyes and allowed me to connect with them. Even the way that the author phrased things was beautiful and poignant.
This book deals with some serious triggers for both the main characters but I still want people to take a chance on this book. The more we, as a society, talk about it the sooner we can start doing what is right.
I only had one complaint with the book, concerning Gavin and the explanation of Innes at the end. This says book one but it felt complete to me. I'm wondering if maybe that will be resolved then.
This was such an emotional rollercoaster. A lot of downs. Very few ups. Callan, is the oldest of siblings and he devotes his life taking care of his family. He’s physically, emotionally and mentally bruised and battered. The amount of pain, this man endures in his life… How can someone suffer this much and still be alive and breathing?
We meet Emery, who we know has captured Callan’s heart. He’s also captured hers. We see Emery go through one of the worst experiences any woman or man can go through and it breaks her. Callan and Emery form a bond like no other, healing and falling in love.
Two broken people who feel shame within themselves, who feel lost, find solace in one another. It’s beautiful but heartbreaking.
Callan & Emery
5 Stars
This book was amazeballs... It was so heart wrenching and so callused in it's entirety that I found myself in a cringe worthy pose most of my way through it. So many plot twists and angst that my heart will never be the same.
Callan is a stand up, true to a fault kind of guy. He works his butt off to support his sister and brother and is rewarded with pain and suffering. I don't know where or how this guy finds his strength, but holy heck, he's one character I will never forget!
Emery seems to be (at least to me) a very quiet and reserved kind of gal. She has strength and definitely a backbone, but put into certain situations, she sort of crumbled a bit. No worries, she has a fantastic motivational reason to pull herself from the depths of despair and rise above the ashes.
The supporting character cast wasn't too vast. One worth mentioning is Callan's sister Innis. I don't really know what or how to say things about her. She seemed to come in like a lamb, but left like a lion. I wish I could read more about her. There seems to be a story there... If only.
So, to wrap this up... it's 415 (Kindle version) pages long and for me that was just right. It sounds long, but once you set you eyes upon these pages it will whiz right by and you'll wonder how you just devoured it in one day! The pacing is perfect, the writing style superb, and the dialogue flows with skill and efficiency. I loved it!!
"Like the wasted moments of deafening clock bells, they were just marking time for her."
"The hurt, though enduring, never permanently removed those pleasant emotions. It only temporarily obstructed his ability to feel them."
If you have triggers, take care in reading this story but also know that the pain BOTH these characters go through (and others in the story) IS a part of what makes Callan and Emery who they are...and every squeamish moment, and clenched teeth moment you read will, in the end, make you grateful for who they are now. If you like a dark, emotional story, you will not regret reading Hurt!

It’s so dark it’s heart wrenching. But beautiful at the same time. Everything is comes full circle and although it leaves a question at the end, I still feel content with how the book finishes.
I don’t usually write reviews but this one deserves it and ever start I gave.

How can a story of two damaged individuals, Callen And Emery who both have such pain and hurt in their past turn out to be such a raw and beautiful story? Absolutely stunning five stinking stars from me, love, love, loved it.
