Rise of Gaia: A Young Adult Fantasy Novel Kindle Edition
What if Mother Earth wasn't simply a metaphor for the planet? What if she's fully aware of what we're doing to her and tapped you on the proverbial shoulder to do something about it? This is where I come in. Apparently, I'm the chosen one. Lucky me.
You know those fantasies where you wake up on your birthday to a new car in the driveway and a hot date? An EV would be cool, and I’d love the date. But I never wished for a crazy vision of a hellish dystopia courtesy of a very pissed-off Mother Earth.
So much for birthday wishes.
Now I’m stuck with the Mother of All Things pummeling me with visions and cries for help. Add in my best friend, a hippie new-age woman, a Thor look-a-like who thinks he’s some breed of faerie, a raven who follows me around like a witchy familiar, and powers that should only exist in movies and books, and what do you get?
My life.
Between navigating high school and wrestling with things beyond my understanding, I’d say the start of my seventeenth year is a real doozy. Gaia is hounding me day and night with violent images of the planet’s destruction and a furious desire for revenge, and I don’t know how much longer I can hold out.
In fact, with everything she’s showing me, I don’t know that I want to.
Time is running out. A wrathful Mother Earth is gathering her army. And, weirdly, I’m the only thing that could save humanity or doom it.
Contemporary young adult fantasy collides with magical realism, fae lore, climate fiction, and the power of friendship.

Because of that I thought I’d really enjoy Rise of Gaia. And for most of the book I did.
Yet I found that with roughly a quarter of the book left I was getting those typical YA feels.
This isn’t a bad thing! Not by any means! It’s just not my cup of tea.
We have, what sounds like, a small town in Oregon where a 17-year-old starts experiencing unknown hallucinations and begins her quest to find out what is happening to her. As we go through this process of discovery, expansion and growth and making new relationships everything feels quite mature and well thought out.
Terran feels like a very mature 17-year-old, in that she seeks out help, she seeks out support and she doesn’t isolate herself when things start going weird. While she’s doing this, we learn more about the poison mankind has been spreading through the earth.
The way Kristin describes this sickness and it’s spread is amazing. It captures your attention and makes your heart bleed for what our one and one planet is going through. So much so that when I went to my local shopping centre and found they’d cut down one of the only trees in the car park my first thought was “Why would you cut down one of the only bit of greenery? Don’t you know how much we need that!”
For a YA book that weaves in fantasy and a strong message of the impact to the environment we’ve had, it’s amazing! I just found myself getting lost in the last part of the book coz of the typical YA feels that I personally don’t like. Any fans of YA and fantasy will LOVE this!

Terran and Beth are two teenagers, one who prefers the isolation of nature and one who lives in her mother's new age, hippie circle. They both love 80's music and indulging in occasional junk food fests.
Living in a small town in Oregon, both girls are environmentally conscious and don't fit in with any cliques at school. But they have a blast together.
Terran's journey starts with a birthday present from Beth. Her mother, Celeste, offers to do Terran's Natal Astrological chart. From this point on, Terran's world is drastically changed.
I'm never going to be a spoiler. But I will say this. The rest of the book will blow your mind while challenging you to rethink your everyday choices.
As well, you will question your moral stands on just about everything you do, see any participate in on a daily basis. I fully give this book a 5 star rating and hope to pass it on to many people.
