Once he places his life in God’s hands, he is determined and zealous. True to real life, we also see his humanity when he isn’t there for his wife, or is a little to bossy with his sister, and finally, when he leads his team somewhere that he didn’t receive specific instructions to go. These instances remind us of where any and all power comes from, the Holy Spirit. The author never fails to steer the reader in that direction, reminding us that the glory is God’s alone.
Personally, I loved the team’s dynamic. I have worked in ministry alongside some of God’s finest servants. I have experienced being part of a ministry team, and it was amazing! I think this story motivates Christians to be a part of God’s team! We may not be called to serve in the capacity of these fictional characters, but our passion and motivation should be no less. Even though this is a fictional story, we can see the parallels with our own spiritual journey. We do face battles daily, but as the author is faithful to remind us, the battle is the Lord’s and He will never leave us or forsake us.
This book was suspenseful, encouraging, motivating, fun and relatable. I couldn’t put it down! Two of my favorite things about this book were, first, that the Gospel is presented! If anyone reading this doesn’t have a personal relationship with Jesus, there are several examples of simple prayers you can repeat to ask Him into your heart! The second thing I love is how the author captures the reality of how God works. Things may not happen in the most conventional ways, but God uses our circumstances to draw us to Him and uses us to draw others to Him. This book perfectly depicts that!
I have read a lot of Christian fiction, and this book ranks at the top. The author covered all the aspects I look for in a “good book.” I can’t wait to start the second book!

This book made me a better person as I read it since I started analyzing my own negative traits, and if I imagine them as demons, it does truly make me want to work on getting rid of them. I obviously don’t have a special elite team sent by God to fix me, but in a way, this book is that team since it guides you to identifying these feelings and getting rid of them accordingly, all well providing an entertaining story.
One of the worst experiences of this novel is just how many characters you have to learn and that many of them fall flat. I feel that multiple characters could have been eliminated from the plot, and then the remaining characters would have had time and space to grow and have meaningful story arcs of their own. As mentioned, there is a good overarching story plot, but I think Ogando must have felt rushed to get his story completed since very few of the characters had development aside from a conversion to God and Christianity. I don’t think conversion automatically makes you a better person: there are sure to be a few struggles afterwards because it’s nearly impossible to change the habits built over entire years in one night.
I, personally, would have also enjoyed if it had been edited a bit better. It was edited (I checked in the acknowledgements), but specifically towards the middle of the novel, there were multiple mistakes that I couldn’t help but notice, such as an occasional lack of a period at the end of a sentence or a quotation mark when no one had said anything”
If you know what I mean.
Still, this is certainly a book worth reading if you’re a Christian who loves fantasy novels that take place in a real-life setting. Even if you’re not a Christian (I’m not, for example), it’s still a pleasant and entertaining read if you’re looking for something light and wholesome since so many books nowadays make you feel filthy after reading them.

The Elite Commander is calling up an army. Not just any army, an army of those who may be considered unworthy. But God calls the unworthy and makes them worthy. Anthony, who faced the end of a gun before answering the call. His sister, Janet, always served the Lord, but lacked courage and boldness. Michael is facing prison for drunk driving and killing 3 people. His wife, Deborah who loves God, but whose life has been shattered by Michael’s drinking and rage. However, all now stand ready to face the demons of darkness with sword and armor, ready to take on the call God has placed on them. Warriors in God’s army. The question is who will be called next will it be Anthony’s wife Becky and young son Ben? Who else will be called to Ohio to join the team? What demons will they encounter –fear, hostility, despair and sorrow or others? Only time will tell…
What an amazing book! Spiritual warfare with the demons of darkness, humans called out from the pit of despair, God’s grace and forgiveness, the authority of God’s name, the power of the Holy Spirit, everyday people becoming superheroes and there is even more to this book to even list! I’ve always felt Christian novels needed to be more than a sweet, clean story. They need to cause us to ponder and think- walking away changed and Yeral does not fail, In fact he more than exceeded my expectations. Christian readers will be inspired, encouraged and captivated by this outstanding book. The characters are real and engaging, the writing superb. Scripture came alive before my very eyes. “Left Behind”, “The Screwtape Letters”, “The Shack” and “This Present Darkness” rolled into one epic novel that I couldn’t put down. I wasn’t the same after reading “Awareness” (and this is only book one!) and I guarantee no one else will be either. Pondering the question, are we ready to answer the call? Remarkable must read for all Christians and those seeking.

Awareness reads slightly different from regular Christian works, on the basis that Ogando writes with a little more literary flair. For the regular reader of the genre this may be off-putting, but for those who don’t frequent Christian fiction, this may allow for an easier avenue to enjoy the story. The spiritual elements of the book are the most engaging and for the Christian believer, they will be the most edifying. I found Ogando’s use of the faith and virtue to be the best parts of this book. The way these all interact with our protagonists in the book; Anthony, a man waiting for the end, Janet, who is so timid even with faith, Michael, a drunk, and Deborah, who deals with doubt. I think all of their struggles reflect our own in most ways and thereby help bring us further into the story.
Ogando’s strength lies in applying the themes from scripture and making them real in our modern world. In a culture that continually seeks to sap the spiritual sphere of any power, Ogando seeks to replenish and establish that piece that has been missing from our lives for so long. Christian fiction isn’t known for this, and usually only flirts with such robust spiritual narratives and conflicts, but Awareness goes a step further and truly lives up to its title.
The only words of criticism I have towards the book is the pacing considering that it falls into the usual literary trope of milling around at first before it gets its legs. Ogando uses too many characters as well, which weigh the narrative down and makes the reader have to keep a running tally of whom we are talking about in the book. And also not sold on the gimmicky cliffhanger.
All in all, a good first entry to a series.
