Editorial Reviews

Review

"What would happen if Little Red Riding Hood lived in Louisiana insteadof at the edge of the deep dark woods? What would happen if she met awily crocodile instead of the devious big bad wolf? That's what happensin this relocated fairytale by Suzan Johnson, charmingly illustrated byAyessa C. The author clearly loves fairy and folk tales. Little Red andthe Crocodile: Fractured Fairytale is the first in a planned series ofre-imagined classics. The characters eat Louisiana specialties likepeanut patties and homemade pralines, but Little Red is as heedless ofher mother's advice as ever, and this crocodile is just as sneaky andconniving as the wolf.
Suzan Johnson's version of Little Red Riding Hood has many interestingnew characters. And I likedthat Ranger Randy has a different idea of what to do with the crocodileat the end... " -

Little Red and the Crocodile has a central message for all to learn from. I absolutely love that Johnson chose to add elements of the Louisiana culture and used relatable characters. I enjoyed reading this book with my class and with my very own children. It was fun to discuss how it compares to her other books and teach how it compares to others in this genre. The art work is beautiful and the spin on the old fairy tale is classic. Thanks you Suzan Johnson for another great book to add to my collection.

Little Red and the Crocodile by Suzane Johnson is a fractured fairy tale sensation! There are so many wonderful lessons in this book. Zara or Little Red as she is nicknamed is off to visit her Aunt Moshee in the swamps of Louisiana. Her mother warns her not to talk to strangers, go straight to her destination, and not to stop and play her friends on the way. She also reminds Little Red to use her manners and say, "please and thank you." Little Red embarks on her adventure to Aunt Moshee’s house feeling confident as she is now old enough to walk alone. Like most children Little Red prances along the way enjoying the sunny day, beautiful flowers at the market, and the fresh Irises Mr. Leon gifts her. Little Red continues toward Aunt Moshee’s house through the swamps imagining all sorts of lions, tigers, and bears in her head. Suddenly she hears a noise in the bushes and a moment later a crocodile steps out and introduces himself as Cory the Crocodile. He coyly puts her at ease with his swamp tales and Little Red tells him she’s going to Aunt Moshee’s house. They pick fruits from the trees and then part separate ways. Cory hurries to Aunt Moshee’s house since it’s almost lunchtime. When Cory reaches her house, he swallows up Aunt Moshee in one big gulp! Inside of Cory, Aunt Moshee hopes that Randy the Ranger comes to her house and rescues her. Soon, Little Red arrives and is met with the same fate as Aunt Moshee. I will let you surmise the exciting ending when Randy the Ranger stops by Aunt Moshee’s house. I love the way the book is illustrated in black and white contrasted by Little Red’s bright red coat. As a teacher and grandmother, I am constantly directing children to follow safety rules and use their manners much like their parents. Congrats, Suzane Johnson, Little Red and the Crocodile is a darling read and gets 5 gold stars.

A lesson to be learned... "Go straight to your destination, use your manners, do not share personal information with strangers, and never give up."

The story of Zara, little red, may sound familiar but with a twist. Thank God for Ranger Randy. A cute tale for kids and the illustrations are adorable.

There is a beauty to folktales that they are rarely told the same way twice. This story takes some liberties. It contextualizes the story of Little Red Riding Hood to the swamps of Louisiana. Of course locals there are much more worried about crocodiles than big bad wolves, but Little Red isn't worried enough about them and so we learn the oft repeated lessons of this story. Do what your told, as you are told it, and with no delays. Don't stop and talk to strangers. Mixing things up for this fractured fairytale makes it a fun story. Thanks for your love for folklore and Louisiana.

Zara was on a trip to her Aunt Moshee's house. Although her mother told her no short cuts, her curiosity got the best of her. This author did an amazing job detailing what can happen when you don't listen to your parents. I recommend this book for all little ones and for parents to share with their children for a great learning experience.

Johnson pens a remarkable story in Little Red and the Crocodile. It is a new and unique twist on a classic fairytale. Johnson definitely writes well and her stories are geared for children. This is not just a wonderful story, it teaches children about kindness and being a good person. The story is one that should be read to children, and even have them read it as well. The graphics lent to the story. Johnson has a way with words. I look forward to reading more by this author. This read is definitely recommended by Amy's Bookshelf Reviews.

This was a cute take on Little Red Riding Hood full of even cuter illustrations throughout. I felt the pictures of the swamps that Little Red passed by on her journey were a nice touch. As was the activity at the end of the book. I would recommend this for younger readers.

This book has some of the best illustrations I have ever seen.

It is a modern version of the old classic. I don’t want to give away too much of the story, but know that this is a cute story that the little ones would love to read.
There’s a short list of lessons learned at the end, which tie back to the story pretty nicely. The pictures of the swaps of Louisiana almost make me want to travel there. Loved reading this extremely visually appealing book.

I like this twist on a traditional fairytale, and the lesson at the end is just the right type of icing on the cake.
