Zac's Mulligan (Guarding The Gods Book 1) Kindle Edition
Ben Holland is an artist. Falling deeply in love with his best friend in his teens, Ben is left alone when Zac leaves him for the military. Ben heads off to college and lives his life “out and proud” as a gay man and creates a brand name for himself with his artwork. Throughout all the years that pass, Ben never forgets his childhood friend, Zac, or the feelings they once shared.
Zac realizes a decade is too long for Ben not to have a presence in his life and finds Ben living on Cape Cod where they spent their summers as kids. Meeting each other as adults stirs up a lot of memories for both of them.
Zac is looking for a mulligan, a “do over,” with his childhood best friend. The question is: Can Ben find a way to put aside his old hurts and fully open his heart to Zac for a second time? Or maybe the past is something better left buried on the beach where it all began.

About the author

Ann Lister is a native New Englander currently living in Florida with her husband. She has pulled details from her years living in the New England area and uses many local settings and landmarks in her novels.
After graduating art school, marrying, and raising two daughters, she established her own video production company. Her nearly two decades working in video production included work within the music industry and won her a coveted Telly Award. Her 'behind-the-scenes' exposure to the music world and her love of rock music is the inspiration for her erotic rock star romances.
The Rock Gods series gave her Bestselling Author status on Amazon. Beyond The Music, Book 7 in the series, hit #1 in the Gay Erotica genre during the Pre-Order and held that spot for several weeks. This last book in The Rock Gods series launches the spin-off series, Guarding The Gods, which releases in early Summer of 2016.
Fall For Me, Book One in the series was a Finalist in the 2013 Rainbow Award. Each book in this series brings her two favorite elements together: musicians and the love between two men. These stories focus on what it truly means to love; love unconditionally, love without restrictions or labels, love without fear or judgment – to just simply love.

Zac is a bodyguard working for, Ventura Security since leaving the Military. He works along side fellow ex marines protecting The Rock Gods. If you read, Beyond The Music you will know, Zac was injured and had to take some time off. Even though he wasn't around the guys for a while, they still kept in touch with him. He was particularly close to Lincoln.
The guys in Black Ice and Ivory Tower have always been like a family to each other, 'Brothers by choice' is the term they use and for their protection detail it is no different, they have welcomed them into their circle of trust and are treated like family.
Zac watches the love that goes on around him and he wants what they have. They only person that meant anything to Zac was Ben, his childhood best friend. Zac decides he needs to man up and pay Ben a visit. Jesus!! after ten years, I thought this should be interesting, imagine not only having your best friend from your teenage years turn up at your door, but the one person who you became sexually adventurous with. So you know, I kept on reading and you will too because no spoilers in this review. Sorry!!
Ben not only lost his best friend when he was younger but he lost the love of his life. He really hasn't had it easy. Ben has had many things to deal with by himself no less. No real support because he just couldn't deal with his mother.
He is a brilliant artist and many famous people are dying to work with him. The last person Ben expects to see is Zac. It's not the warmest welcomes I have ever read, in fact it's probably warmer in the antarctic. LOL!
There is so much going on in this story it's just.... WOW!! Did that happen? and really, he was? No way, she didn't let that happen. Yep, it is filled with some heart stopping moments, I will admit I had some tears, I am only human, but you know the credit for bringing out all these different emotions out can only go to the Author.
It was a sensational start to what, I am one hundred percent sure will be an epic series. I totally recommend to all The Rock Gods fans and to all lovers Gay Romance.
That's said, I admit I'm a sucker for a second chance romance, which is what Zac and Ben's story was. There was the expected hurt from how they parted in the last, but they were able to work through that. Their 'fated' meeting while doing their respective jobs was obviously going to happen from the moment we learnt what Ben's job was. It did surprise me that Zac was given the freedoms he was given his job. His boss did pull him aside at one point, and while Zac didn't think it was warranted, I think it definitely was - not because Zac was slacking off, but because he was obviously distracted and all it takes is one slip and someone could be hurt or killed.
I have seen a bit of a theme in this author's writing when it comes to superfluous plotlines - in this book, it was the situation with Ben and Zac's father's. This served no benefit to their story, added no depth to their past, and just distracted from their story.
Overall, as the start of a spin-off series this was ok. I usually like to be able to choose if I read about secondary characters that I liked from the main series, so I'm definitely a little annoyed that you must read this series if you want to continue with the other Rock Gods books.

Action, angst, and strong men...this book has it all. Totally worth reading!

The last time I read anything by Ann Lister was Beyond the Music in February 2016 previous to that I've read all the Rock Gods series and even as far back as 2013 with Sheet Music and For All The Right Reasons all of which are absolutely fantastic and now we have Simon's story to look forward to in the latest Band of Brothers series which I have to say is a nice surprise and already downloaded.
Zac's Mulligan... we were introduced to Zac in Beyond The Music and we knew he was thinking of finding his friend Ben, well this is their story.
It's beautifully written and in parts very emotional, it's full of regret mixed feelings, emotions and miss understandings.
You wonder at the beginning whether Zac and Ben will ever get back what they once had, Ben is harbouring a lot of anger and Zac walking back int Ben's life after 10 years isn't going to make it right in 5 minutes.
Ann lister keeps you totally gripped with this story, its full of lots of love and attention to detail as always, but what I really love is all the security detail and there is plenty of that especially when Black Ice and Ivory Tower get to the theatre in Germany it becomes even more so in fact you feel as though you are there with all the knowledge and orders that Fizzbo is giving out, it's all the fine detail that Ann Lister captures so well. There's an anxious build up to the performances, all those tunnels don't help Fizzbo certainly isn't happy and he has good reason because nobody could predict what would happen next.
It's absolute panic and you feel as though you are right there with them, it really is on the edge of your seat stuff, there is so much at stake and it takes everything you have to keep calm.
You go through every emotion as it becomes a waiting game for all those concerned but Zac and Ben are at the forefront of your mind especially as they have worked through their issues and giving their relationship a chance... it can't possibly be over for them.
It's a tense and worrying time for obvious reasons but thankfully we breath a sigh of relief, apart from injuries and trauma everyone is safe but it puts things into perspective especially for Zac and Ben.
Before Zac settle's with Ben he has people to see and places to be one of which is his father, this is one of those moments that has been building, you have no idea how it is going to go... one things for sure it is very emotional and hearing Zac's father explain everything is heartbreaking and again put things into perspective and another relationship will be on the mend.!
As usual we get a beautiful build up to the end nothing is ever rushed, the scene on the beach is superb as Zac recreates a do over. They are back to that very moment that ended on a bad note but now they are creating brand new memories.
Loved the epilogue made me laugh with all the usual banter thank goodness..!!

Zac's Mulligan is the first book in the Guarding the Gods spinoff series. As the author promised—to herself, as much as to her fans—we'd not seen the last of our boys from Black Ice mostly, with just enough Ivory Tower to take the edge off.
Remember, this is about a whole new bunch of characters. These are the guys that put themselves out there protecting our rockers.
Ok, first batter up is Zac Mulligan—ex-military, now an employee for Ventura Security Group. Going back to the last book, Beyond the Music, Zac was wounded in the clusterf#ck of all that was Sebastian Keating—knife-wielding, disgruntled, wannabe columnist ~ he's irrelevant after that because he doesn't deserve any more notability. There's someone that's been taking front and center in Zac's mind—Ben Holland. Ben was his childhood friend, and by the time they graduated high school they had already turned into something more.
With Lincoln's suggestion, Zac decides to see what Ben has been up to for the last ten years, as he heads back to the States to heal. Yes folks, ten years. A lot can change in ten years.
As much as Ben and Zac have grown, each with an impressive resume—Ben is an accomplished and well sought-after photographer and artist—they still exhume innocence, maybe something carried over and not lost from their youth since that's exactly where they left off with each other. Hoping that the years haven't permanently torn them apart, Zac experiences for the first time, the anger and bitterness of Ben's reaction at his intrusive return into Ben's life considering Zac had all but abandoned him when he left for the service. Life wasn't easy for Ben after Zac left. Zac knew going into a war zone who he was going up against, where as Ben was blindsided and left to pick up the pieces of his life that were shattered from the very places and people that should have nurtured him.
In the course of this brilliant story, Ben and Zac professionally and personally weave their way into each other's lives. Finally, for the both of them, the truthful and bittersweet acknowledgement of a love that never had a proper chance to find its place, rekindles itself—their feelings for each other throughout all the years have never faltered. In order for any of Ann's characters to get their priorities where they should be, in one way or another, they go through hell to get to heaven. Call it "a lesson learned" or "seeing the light", there's always plenty of raw emotion and heart tugging situations swirling around. Zac And Ben are smoking hot together as well—it's more of a slow burn than a jumping in right away. I truly loved watching the two of them as they navigated their way back to each other.
Zac's Mulligan has plenty of banter and fun and games amongst all the band members. Because the story now focuses on a new crew, Ann can do whatever she wants with all or any of the band members. All Rock Gods fans are going to go nuts at what goes on on-stage, or in a bar, or even in Dagger's hotel bathroom (take one guess!) There's also a section that is so intense and well written that I hadn't even realized I was holding my breath the whole time.
Of course there are bits that lead to the next in the series that will involve Fizzbo and a new character, Kensey.
I can't rave enough about Zac's Mulligan. Ann Lister really knocked this one outta the ballpark. The storyline was brilliant, her attention to detail painstaking, along with Zac and Ben and her cast of epic supporting characters, made this first book of the Guarding the Gods series, hands down a five plus star read for me. Just an incredible job by an outstanding author!!

This is the heart warming story of inseparable childhood best friends, Zac and Ben. In their teens, Zac leaves for the military without as much as a goodbye, unknowing that Ben has fallen in love with him. An unfortunate accident leaves Zac with extra time on his hands and his thoughts go to his childhood best friend. He's never gotten Ben out of his head or heart and decides that a decade is too long with no contact. He yearns to reconnect with Ben and wants a "do-over" but can Ben put the past aside and let that happen?
Zac and Ben's story took me on a roller coaster of emotions. I swooned, laughed and cried. My heart broke and was put back together. I longed for Zac and Ben to be together again but for them, it was a tough journey. In the end, it was a HEA and a beautifully written story of forgiveness and second chances.
Not only did I adore Zac and Ben's story but I also LOVED the glimpses we get into the lives of the Rockers from the Rock Gods series. Ann does a wonderful job of weaving the Rock Gods into the story and giving us a taste of the men we've already fallen in love with! If you love rock star stories like I do and you haven't read the Rock Gods series by Ann, run to Amazon now and one-click Fall for Me! You won't be sorry!!!
Last but not least, I am a HUGE fan of Ann Lister!! I adore her books, love her writing style and this book definitely has it all! You can feel the love and friendship and the hurt and angst. The emotions fly off of the pages and into your heart. And the chemistry between Zac and Ben is off the charts H.O.T.!!! I thought my Kindle was going to combust and go up in flames!
If possible, I would give this book more than 5 stars. I've just finished Book 1 in this series and already can't wait to see what Ann has in store for us with Book 2 in the series!!
