Surrendered (Intrigue under Western Skies Book 2) Kindle Edition

4.7 out of 5 stars 149 ratings

New Cover designed by Virginia McKevitt.
While on a mission to clear his beloved Carianne’s reputation, Rhyan Cason receives word an anthrax outbreak threatens his ranch. Even as he ponders how he can afford to take a wife, dark secrets from the distant past convince him he must break the engagement.
Stunned by the sudden change in Rhyan, Carianne leaves the ranch and returns to the nearby town of Westerfield. While waiting for her shattered heart to heal, she shifts her attention to building the library she’s promised the town. Even though Colt Holliman offers her courtship, circumstances keep drawing her back to Sollano, the beautiful ranch she’s come to love almost as much as its owner, and she fears Rhyan is fighting a danger greater than losing the ranch—one only God can defeat.

I'm a retired Air Force (civilian) accountant living in Warner Robins, Georgia. My interests are varied. I enjoy reading and writing Christian historical romances and inspirational commentary, golf, sewing, crocheting, knitting, politics, history, science and mathematics. I attend church regularly, and God is the center of my life. I'm proud of the good job my daughter is doing rearing my three wonderful grandchildren. God and my family make up the inner circle of my life, but I want to reach out with understanding and love to others.

Sometimes you pick up a book to read and from the first page it grabs you and won't let go, this is one of those books. I enjoyed how the characters were flawed yet real. Rhyan has pretty much everything a guy could ever want, except a relationship with the Lord. He knows in order for Carianne and him to be able to marry he must be a believer. I like how he didn't let that sway him though. He knew if he was going to have a relationship it had to be true and on his terms, not just for Carianne.
Carianne basically knew she loved Rhyan from the first time she laid eyes on him but she's made a promise to herself, she refuses to marry an unbeliever. I like how she loved him in spite of himself. She could've beat him over the head with verses or pointed out his many flaws, yet that's not what she does, she asks him questions designed to make him think deeper thoughts than he would on his own. She also lives out her faith by using her means, int his case her money, to provide for the town and for individuals in need. She's not desperate for a husband. Don't get me wrong she loves Rhyan and has every intention of marrying him but she's not going to sit around pining after him.
All in all I truly enjoyed Surrendered and believe you will too! I can't wait for the next book in the series to see if Rhyan ever finds his mom and to see if Colt finds himself a wife.
*I was provided a free copy of this book. All opinions expressed above are my own.

I bought this shortly after finishing book 1, as I couldn't wait to see how Carianne's story would end. I was not disappointed. With enough plot twists to keep it interesting, I kept turning the page hoping Rhyan would come to his senses in time. This book, thankfully, ends Carianne's story, but leaves the way open to the story of the other main characters.

I also appreciated the strength of the Christian elements of prayer and forgiveness; however, I found it slightly weak on love. Aside from saying that God is love, the story seemed to end with the "true love never dies" motto, neglecting that love is a choice and committment and as such, can in fact die. The hero in the story briefly alludes to this, but the thought was never fully developed and so is missing from the actual take away message of the book. Even so, this is one of the best books in the Christian romance genre I have read in months (avg 100 books/year)

Rhyan Cason is ready to marry the love of his life when accusations begin to fly about his diseased cattle and a plot to destroy other ranchers. In an era when being in society’s good graces is everything, Carianne Barlow survives speculation and innuendo to salvage her reputation. I haven’t read a lot of books set in the Old West and enjoyed learning about the culture, “technology,” and geography. Women had limited choices during this time period, and I found it interesting to see how Carianne worked out her difficulties under these constraints. Rhyan was a complex character, and despite being a “man’s man-” cowboy, rancher, and entrepreneur, he was caring without being sissyish. The plotline about the anthrax outbreak among Rhyan’s cattle was fascinating and obviously well-researched. This is book two of the Intrigue Under the Western Skies series, but was easily read as a stand-alone novel.

I received this book for free from Celebrate Lit Publicity, and a positive review was not required. All views expressed are my own.
