Ramee's Fugitive Cowboy (The Annex Mail-Order Brides Book 2) Kindle Edition

4.5 out of 5 stars 304 ratings

Clean, Christian romance novella about a Victorian era, western mail-order bride.
While attending the Harvard Annex, Ramee Abbott gains acclaim as a dress designer and attracts the interest of a textile tycoon. She doesn't recognize how despicable he is until he sells her designs as his own and gives her an ultimatum--marry him immediately or face social ruin. Trouble is, he knows too much about her. She has to leave town fast.
After scanning the ads for mail-order brides, she chooses Josh Volker, a cowboy who's purchased a ranch near Sacramento, California.
Although Josh has recently turned his life around and become a Christian, a bad reputation hounds him. No decent woman will marry him, and after years of drifting, he wants a wife to help him build his new ranch.
He didn't expect a prospective bride to show up so soon, certainly not one as pretty and talented as Ramee. Or as desperate. He suspects she has secrets of her own.
Prequels to the long historical novel series Intrigue Under Western Skies, the Annex Mail-Order Brides novella series follows three courageous young women who find love through the mail.

Good, clean Christian story with likeable characters and great descriptions. After Ramee's jerk of a suitor stole her business ideas while also insisting she marry him soon, she sees a mail-order bride ad. The man who wrote the ad sounds perfect for her. She answers by telegram because she needs to get out of town right away, fearful of what Jackson will do if he finds out what she is doing. She just tells Josh she is coming and when. So Josh is a little reluctant at first since he knows nothing about her. Ramee worries that he won't want to marry her if he learns of the circumstances of her birth, while Josh has the same worries about how she will react when he tells her he used to run with a gang. Both are Christians now, so have started anew. There are misunderstandings on both sides as they get to know each other as well as suspense and danger before a happy ending.

Ramee and Josh's pasts are alike. Both are trying for a fresh start. Each wants to tell the other their secrets, but the timing isn't right... and then they fall in love and it doesn't matter, until the shooting starts.
Were the bullets meant for him or her?

This story is full of old west excitement, romance, and family drama. It was a lot of fun to read.

I’m finally making my way through the “older” books on my ereader and should have read Ramee’s Fugitive Cowboy long before now. Elaine Manders is one of my favorite authors of Western and Mail-Order Bride fiction, and this story doesn’t disappoint. I felt badly for Ramee whose dreams of a dress designing career go up in smoke thanks to low-life fiancé. Women had a tough go of it back in the “olden days” with few opportunities for a professional or the chance to use their brain. I can’t imagine how frustrating it would have been to live back then. I love that she takes the bull by the horns and heads west as a bride. Josh is a wonderful hero, trying to figure out how to reconcile his newly found faith with his past. The fits and starts of their communication and expectations makes for lots of confusion and misunderstandings. I enjoyed watching them get more comfortable with themselves and each other. Description sprinkled throughout the story immersed me into the sights, sounds, and smells of the Old West.

I read it because it was free Christian fiction, and I appreciated the Christian part of the story, but in the end, it's not my kind of genre. You get typical scenes, or references, that include, train, chaperones, wagons, horses, gunfights, a saloon, a marshal, wanted posters, a jail break, outlaws, brothel, a ranch, a livery, a kidnapping and a threat to ravish. There's an extra dose of creativity though. A lot of the story centers around action, but not all, and I prefer my stories to center around relationships and lives getting healed. Thus, for my personal taste compared to all the books I'm willing to read, it's only a 3-star book.

A great book about a young lady who had run from the man who had tried to marry her when she said no. A man out west had changed his life and started over when his Grandmother had him post an advertisement for a Bride. A must read for those who enjoy historical western romance kindle books from Amazon at a special price and from a delightful author who keeps me wondering what next for the characters. A n event filled story to read and enjoy.

When her good-for-nothing, lying suitor Jackson Crandal steals her business ideas, dress designer Ramee Abbot answers an advertisement for a mail-order bride. With her lady’s maid in tow, she boards the train west and prepares to meet her betrothed, Josh Volker.
Josh Volker has secrets of his own. When he meets Ramee, he must decide to trust her or live a lie for the rest of his life. Will Ramee stay or will she return to the city?
Josh and Ramee are two independent thinking people. When they come together, sparks fly until they both realize they must show more consideration for each other if they want their marriage to work.
I felt the ending was a little rushed. Maybe because I enjoyed the characters so well I wanted to hang around a while. Also, I wanted to see a little more of Jackson Crandal getting his just desserts!
Ramee’s Fugitive Cowboy is heartwarming, witty, and entertaining. Recommended for western fans of all ages.
