Grave Truth: A Sydney Brennan Novel (Sydney Brennan PI Mysteries Book 7) Kindle Edition

4.7 out of 5 stars 69 ratings

A runaway teen. A dying wish. A shallow schoolyard grave…

When PI Sydney Brennan is hired to find a man’s missing niece, memories of her own troubled teenaged years make the hunt a personal priority. But she can’t refuse a man’s deathbed request, either: to uncover a boy’s long-forgotten, final resting place at a shuttered juvenile center.

Once Sydney commits to tackling both high stakes assignments, life gets complicated. Locating the missing teen is only the first hurdle on the runaway front, and someone demonstrates an alarming interest in the cold case. With the young victim decades in the ground, who are they protecting? And why?

Can Sydney expose the shady correctional facility’s grim secrets before more skeletons are buried? Maybe even her own…

Grave Truth continues the gritty Sydney Brennan Mysteries (see reading order below). If you like dark conspiracies, sarcastic humor, and shocking surprises, then you’ll love Judy K. Walker’s chilling story.

About the Author

A recovering criminal attorney, Judy K. Walker has enough spare letters after her name (and student loan debt) to suggest that insatiable curiosity is something fictional Tallahassee private investigator Sydney Brennan inherited from her creator. Fortunately, Judy's curiosity rarely involves murders.
In addition to the ongoing series featuring the intrepid red-headed PI, Judy penned the Dead Hollow Trilogy (
Prodigal, Founder, and Heir). The Appalachian crime thriller series with a dash of the paranormal taps into the heart of her West Virginia upbringing, evoking the shadowy mountains and hollows (properly pronounced hollers) whose absence she still laments.
Judy writes from her home in Hawaii, where she is surrounded by husband, dogs, cat, and assorted geckos. If she's not tapping away at her computer, she's probably sweeping tumblepuppies (the piles of accumulated critter hair).

A recovering criminal attorney, Judy K. Walker has enough spare letters after her name (and student loan debt) to suggest that insatiable curiosity is something fictional Tallahassee PI Sydney Brennan inherited from her creator. Fortunately, Judy’s curiosity rarely involves murders.

Born and raised in West Virginia, Judy returned to her roots in the Appalachian supernatural thriller Dead Hollow trilogy (Prodigal, Founder, and Heir). Now she's back at work on the next Sydney Brennan book.

Judy writes from her home in rainy East Hawaii, where she is surrounded by husband, feral pigs, and assorted geckos.

MY RELATIONSHIP WITH SYDNEY BRENNAN: Many authors say their characters are their alter egos, doing the things they've always wanted to do in the ways they wish they could do them. At the risk of sounding shallow, my private investigator Sydney Brennan--with her shoulder-length, curly red hair--is my Hair Alter Ego. It's hard to tell from the ancient, faded, pre-digital photo at the right, but when I was very young I had red ringlets of curls. (And yes, shockingly, that is a book in my hands.) They never grew back after my first haircut, and my mother still laments their loss. The red hue is long gone and as for the curls, the best I can do now is a persistent cowlick and the occasional unruly wave.

Started with the first 3 books as a discounted special set and love them so much I bought the next 3 as a set. They are so great I couldn't purchase this one fast enough. Read it through at a single sitting--I kept thinking I'd stop when I found a spot to take a break, but never found a spot to make me want to put the book down!

I read a LOT of mystery fiction and Judy K Walker is now #6 in my top 10 authors list. Sydney Brennan and her entourage are so real--I'm completely emotionally invested in the characters. Thankfully not a lot of gratuitous language or violence, but (finally) an author who writes authentic situations that make sense to the average person.

This particular novel starts out with a couple of simple investigations about kids that intertwine into a single compelling story which touches on an all-too-real contemporary issue as the story evolves. Walker takes us on a logical journey through Sydney's queries revealing bits and pieces that we put together with her--no sudden jumps to startling (and nonsensical) revelations, but revelations nonetheless. I can usually figure out most mystery stories before I'm halfway through, but with Walker, and especially with this one, my mind never wavered because the story is so engaging and compelling.

Walker adds a lovely bit of personal coincidence into each of Sydney's stories, and this one ends with the best one of all, so far. I can hardly wait to read her next Sydney Brennan mystery. In the meantime, I'm getting her Appalachian mysteries to quench my Walker thirst.

This book is well done on all levels. Sydney’s gut always does manage to get her into deeper trouble than we all expect at the outset, but this is pretty unpleasant in its revelation and exploration of the depraved depths some find acceptable. Fortunately, Sydney also manages to involve herself with oddballs whose inherent decency makes a fine leavening agent to counteract the evil. This was a very satisfying book to read.

I’ve thoroughly enjoyed this series and hope there will be more. Walker does a good job at keeping you on the edge of your seat. Well worth the read. And I encourage you to start at the very beginning!

Sydney's investigations are always wild. There's action, nuttiness, danger, physical altercations, ups, downs, colorful characters, and bringing new people into her circle. I'm ready to read the next mystery.

I have read all the Sydney books. Short stories included. I was surprised quite a bit in this book. Even if you have never picked up a book before this one is amazing. The author always includes enough history to help understand how characters are connected. Can't wait for the next adventure.

I just finished A Grave Truth The latest SYDNEY Brennan Novel. And I’ve been up past 4am the past nights reading this. She’s the heir to Kinsey Milhone if you miss Sue Grafton but very much her own character. I enjoyed each of the books 5⭐️Worth. I highly recommend all of them them and Thank You JUDY. Keep writing.
