"Keep an eye on her," he says loud enough for me to hear across the deck, "Make sure she doesn't try to fling herself overboard again. I have no intention of letting her slip away."

Her song is a gift bestowed by the gods; so why does it feel like a curse? Seventeen-year-old Wren thinks she has just swum away from the greatest threat in the sea. That's until she finds herself being hauled upon a warlord's boat. With her life at the mercy of a young, temperamental King, Wren must decide who is her ultimate enemy. Can Fate be altered? What do gods have planned?
Syrens are bound to tell the truth, but that doesn’t mean their lives cannot be riddled with lies.

Enchanting tale! Great effort!
Meraki: A Syren Story, follows a young siren who has recently fled the miseries of her predestined life. She’s willing to take a risk and face the dangers of the open sea for a chance at freedom. It isn’t long though before she finds herself ”caught up” in an entirely new set of struggles. ⁣ ⁣ Naomi Kelly writes beautifully! The story is packed with action, mythical beasts, and strong characters. Wren and Kellan, the main characters, are both powerful, driven, and determined, helping to keep the plot interesting and moving forward. There‘s a nice romance in the book though it isn’t the central focus of the entire story. The book is on the shorter side, so even though the relationships develop naturally, it does seem to happen a little quicker than it would in a longer book or series. Naomi has a bright future ahead of her, and I look forward to reading what she puts out next

    Book Rating: ★★★☆☆ (3.5 / 5 stars)

Wren is fleeing from her destiny. She doesn’t want to be like her mother, cursed to murder innocent men with her song. But, when she is pulled aboard the ship of temperamental King Kellan, her plans are sent awry. Now she is forced to help Kellan get his family back, while her destiny is chasing her across the sea.

In a fast paced, gripping novel, we join Wren on her fight to take back her destiny. A powerful, sarcastic syren, the reader will be captivated by her tale. Naomi Kelly pulls from different areas of Greco-Roman mythology to create this world that guides Wren’s life: the Gods are watching, different creatures bow to their whim, and humans respect these gods with the same intent. It makes her capture, Kellan, all the more interesting as a descendent of the Gods himself. The amount of research and care that went into creating such a wonderful setting is astounding. The author deserves kudos for being able to paint this picture of the world in less than 250 pages.

I was enchanted by Wren’s story, or perhaps her “song”, until the very end. I wanted her to win; and as I hoped, she fights until the very end, not letting any one “man” save the day. This is her fight to win. This is something I always love seeing in stories: a woman fighting no matter the cost. Naomi Kelly’s ability to write fast paced and exciting battle scenes also help us to cheer for Wren. They’re realistic, leaving your heart pounding and hoping for more.

While the pace of the book helped with these fight scenes, it also impacted it negatively. The story probably deserved another 50 to 100 pages to help us really understand the world as a whole. For me personally though, the pace negatively impacted the romance that blossoms. The enemies-to-lover trope is not my favorite, and while it can work in many situations, it needs time to fester. Because of the speed of the book, we didn’t get to see Wren and Kellan’s relationship naturally evolve from captor to friends to lovers. This is of course a personal opinion, and some people will like the pace in which this unfolds, so I wouldn’t say it should prevent anyone from picking up the story.

Naomi Kelly is a captivating writer though and I cannot wait to see what else she puts out. She’s definitely on my “to-watch” list, and highly encourage everyone to check out Meraki.

What happens when a syren gets caught in a king's net? She gets pulled into his mission to save his family. He, in turn, gets pulled into her world and as the two collide, they realize there is more to them than syren and king.

The characters are vibrant. The greek mythology throughout is refreshing. I loved this take on syrens and the romance is an added bonus!

This was the perfect book to curl up on the beach with. I wanted an afternoon read and this was it. Took me about three hours to read. The author has created a very unique universe one that plays off of familiar gods/goddess and stories but still very fresh and new. Wren is absolutely one of my favorite lead characters I’ve gotten to meet. I could read so many books from this world. Loved every min of it.

Those who may have been following my reviews probably already know that I’m a sucker for mythology based stories. I enjoy reading about mythological events and creatures. And that is exactly what prompted me to read Meraki.
If a book has a strong and murderous female main character then the author already has my attention. This book is about powerful Syrens with a strong female antagonist. Powerful enough to bring entire kingdoms down!
Add to the fact that the story references Greek mythology and quite a sea monsters and other creatures make an appearance, you have yourself an action-packed read.
I give this book 4/5 stars.

WOW! What a book, what a wild roller-coaster of action, twists and emotions.

This mythical fantasy story is what every fantasy fan should read.

The story is unbelievable fascinating, gripping and dramatic and these mixed with a lot of humor and of course a beautiful unique love story, makes it even more mesmerising.
I love this book and couldn't stop reading it.
I was as much fascinated with the amount of the different mythological creatures and captivating events as I was with the unique writing style.

I loved Wren from the first page.
She is the most badass syren I have ever read about. She is stubborn, moody and sarcastic, but she is also selfless without even realising it.

Kellan is at the beginning a hot tempered and moody jerk, but after hearing his story you just can't be mad at him.
He is passionate about everything he does and that passion includes Wren. He knows what (and who) he wants and if he wants something, nobody can stop him.

At first glance, they are as different as they can get, but as the story unfolds their worlds and goals mingle to create a common goal.

I can't wait to read the second book in the series.

Some analysis before I start gushing...

You may remember my reviews of other YA fantasy like Shadow and Bone, and how irritating I felt the tropes were. Naive, powerless young girl relies on others until she can suddenly do it all on her own.

    Not Wren.

From the first line, she's fighting for survival, for freedom and to discover more about who and what she is. In dangerous situations, her powers are not overplayed as Kelly has well thought out limitations within her world-building, but they are always used in compliment to the other character's skills. Action scenes become exciting, a great mix of magic and hand to hand.

It's inspired by Greek myth, but Kelly has gone further to create her own magic system, with every detail fully realised. The unique interpretations of oaths, Meraki, luring, telepathy, and ichor were my favourite part of this book.

Kelly also creates some beautiful love matches here, and I won't say much more so as not to spoil it. This includes a happy gay couple, both of whom are instrumental to the plot, and are just the sweetest 💞

The masterful crafting of lore is second only to Kelly's character development. Kellan is particular is well-written, playing with and subverting the warlord and tyrannous king tropes to great effect.

My only critique would be that there was one emotional moment in the finale that felt pushed aside, but it didn't impact my enjoyment.

Now the gushing. This book is fun from the first page. It got me out of a reading slump and reminded me of all the things I love about fantasy. I'm not a big fan of romance, esp enemies to lovers, and yet I was rooting for the characters.

I had such a good time being fully immersed in this world, and all I can say is - fantasy readers, why haven't you read this yet?

Meraki introuduces us to a ruthless syren who on every birthday takes the heart of a Prince. Whilst showing her younger cousin on how to lure these men to their deaths, Temptation gets the better of her and she takes another heart before her 18th birthday.
The Sea Queen is as brutal as the come and wants everyone and everything to be under her control.
Prince Kellan who's only desire is to be basically a pirate and sail the world, has his own way of tackling the syren issue.
Upon one of his trips to kill a syren he snags our ruthless syren.
Wren as we come to know her isn't a typical syren, she has a thirst for something different.
Without going too much into the story plot and spoiling it, this novel was much much more than I hoped for.
When I first started reading I got Ariel and Prince Eric vibes, if you take away the killing stuff. I thought it was going to be a whimsical fishy tale.
Boy was I wrong, this was packed with adventure and had more twists and turns than a country road in the Yorkshire Dales!!
I absolutely loved it, I loved the way it was laced with the Greek gods but not totally focused on them, so it didn't take away from the actual story.
I loved how Wren was as stubborn as they come but she actually grew and fought for someone other than herself. I loved the bond between her and Kellan.
The world that was created was whimsical but the writing made it more than rainbows and sparkles. The way the whole novel was written had me feeling like I was transported there.
    I absolutely enjoyed Meraki.
