- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 12 September 2014This was a gripping read...right from the start which always gets a thumbs up from me. I read some reviews that said this wasn't for the faint hearted and I would have to agree, one scene in the last quarter in particular I found rather uncomfortable to read...but it was in keeping with this killer, who was a real piece of work!
I got very frustrated with some of the detectives near the end and their attitudes and kind of felt they didn't get taken down a peg or two enough, which I would have liked. I got so mad at the new DI that took over and in a way wanted to rush through this book to read how things were to turn out...lots of tension and anticipation which goes to highlight the talent of this author.
Susan is without doubt one of favourite authors and I have read almost all of her work and found her style witty and insightful..and her plots flow really well. Her characters are always well thought out and deep enough to build attachment quickly...this book is no exception to her previous work in this regard.
I liked that there was no skipping of time apart from a few days/weeks at the end, because I absolutely hate it when I am following characters lives and suddenly I'm robbed of parts of it...left to hear about situations after the fact.
Ultimately..a great read and if you love suspense and you like this author this is a must read!
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 9 January 2021I enjoyed this serial killer thriller - if that is the right thing to say. A good read and not a whodunit as the killer is revealed fairly early in the book. A cop with a firm and sometimes unpopular view of justice is on the case. A five star story but too many silly annoying errors brings it down a star.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 12 December 2014You can count on Susan Mac Nicol, I know I am going to be captivated when I start to read one of her books.
I absolutely loved Love And Punishment, as always I have to read her books in one sitting as there is no way I could have put this down.
This is a psychological thriller that will keep you guessing throughout, there are lots of twists and turns to the story so you are constantly trying to work out who the psycho killer may be, I thought I had a idea but was completly wrong.
From the first page the action starts, your heart is pounding and your wondering if this Is the first killing. This is where you are introduced to the main characters who I fell in love with straight away, they certainly played with my emotions as they are men your not going to forget in a hurry.
I only hope there is more to come as this would be a fantastic series.
If you enjoy m/m, crime/psychological thrillers with great writing, engaging characters and a story which keeps its tension throughout then this is for you!
Highly Recommended!
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 15 August 2015My rolling pin is now in the bin. Why you ask? Well you seriously need to read to find out.
This book was a little bit on the dark side but had a great story. I'm so used to boy meets girl or boy meets boy and live happily ever after that this book shocked me but in a good way. I could not put it down.
Anthony is a police detective and very good at his job. He has a very protective nature, extremely good looking and he's Italian. YUMMY!!
The man in Anthony's life is called Flynn another hottie. He's a journalist and they are both completely in love with each other.
When a huge case that Anthony is working on starts to affect his personal life things go from bad to worse.
There is a killer on the loose and Flynn is in danger. Anthony will do everything he can to protect him and his friends.
People have lots of different views on the right course of punishment to fit each crime. Many believing in the justice system like Anthony's partner at work Rupert. He reminds me of a bible basher, people that constantly preach.
However Anthony has his own views and it's no secret what he'd like to see happen to these monsters that commit serious, disturbing and hateful crimes and I have to say I agree with Anthony.
There are quite a few characters in this book that I'd love to hear more about like Flynn's ex boyfriend Kieran and their new friend Marshall. Both very loveable characters.
Overall this book was outstanding because the story was gripping. The research that writers need to do in order to give the reader the best account possible did not go unnoticed in this book.
Had to be 5 rolling stars, pun intended. I highly recommend this book to readers that love the M/M Genre but also love a gripping story.
Warning does contain scenes of abusive violence.
Once again I thank you Author Susan Mac Nicol for taking me on a journey of love, life and a serious killing spree.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 22 February 2021I have given this book five stars because the plot was brilliant, the characters well rounded, the chemistry between Anthony and Flynn hot and believable and the sex scenes enjoyable but there were so many typos that I thought of dropping a star! But I really enjoyed the story and from the first chapter I was scared witless but it was so gripping I carried on reading and I’m so glad I did. This was not a whodunit as we found out who the serial killer was early on and he had his own chilling POV but more of a psychological thriller. I can’t look at my rolling pin in the same way again and I’m thinking of binning it 😂
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 31 August 2014As usual Susan Mac Nicol has not disappointed with her newest novel. Grittier than her last couple of books, I was enthralled by this thriller from the beginning. The characters are well described and their personalities interesting and engaging. This made for a wonderful Sunday afternoon's read and I would definitely recommend. Oh and of course the sex was HOT!

2.0 out of 5 stars Sehr ambivalente Gefühle

5.0 out of 5 stars Ebook and Audio Catching a killer and keeping love ones safe.
OMG.. reading this has you feeling all sorts of emotions. The content of this for the murder scenes are not easy to read but I had to keep reading in case I miss a important clue. As bodies start adding you pray Anthony and his team to catch the bloody killer. This book I couldn't put down towards the ending and staying up past midnight to finish reading. The killer is reviled early in the book but his story is entwined into Anthony and Flynn and someone else who's important. . Ms Mac Nicol is amazing story teller.
When Flynn was taken by The Bow Tie Killer as a taunt, is boyfriend and Police Detective Anthony was scared out of his wits for him. Flynn was released but as changed man after being traumatized by the attack..
The killer had killed no of times which Flynn was following as his job being a reporter and had wanted to interview with him..he'd certainly gotten that... Anthony was terrified for Flynn they'd been seeing each other for 6 months..
Anthony had an unsolved murder of his own brother, Marco over a year ago that's bugged him sadly.
This story will definitely drawn you in if you love a good dramatic drama suspense story..

5.0 out of 5 stars It's 2:00 in the bloody morning!
I could not stop reading this. What an incredibly engrossing and sometimes gross, story. I absolutely loved Tony and Flynn. There was great character building here. There was an overwhelming amount of suspense right from the start. Poor Flynn! Poor Tony, too, with his frustrations with the case and the tangle of emotions he has to face. Flynn was a steadfast support, even when he made mistakes. The way the viewpoint of the killer as shown was chilling. There are some quite graphic depictions of the acts this psychopath/sociopath (or whatever he'd be called) perpetrated. The mind games he played were truly evil. Marshall was initially an enigmatic character. He turned out to be stronger than he first appeared and his sense of humor surprising. I'd like to know how he and Keiran progressed. The attitude Tony held regarding some criminals was one I wholeheartedly agree with. I believe in the punishment fitting the crime. My personal view is that if someone is so mentally disturbed that they intentionally kill, or violate children or adults, they don't belong in the gene pool anymore. So the circumstances were quite satisfying. Rupert Gregg had some good intentions but I don't understand how any police officer wouldn't have an understanding for the desire for retribution in some cases. I really enjoy Susan MacNicol's books. I'd love to see some kind of sequel.

4.0 out of 5 stars A story of unrestrained crime, love and justice!
My first time reading Susan Mac Nicol's work and I mostly enjoyed it. Told in multiple POVs, this is a story about an already established couple: a detective and investigative reporter who get on the radar of prolific serial killer. The suspense is high and some situations are really intense and graphic. This is not a whodunit story since the killer is a known to the reader and has a POV of their own. This was a bit of disappointment for me at first, but I started appreciating it later in the book. The knowing of who was the culprit made the situations that more vicious and unexpected.
Both MCs Tony and Flynn were likable and easy to relate, and had wonderful chemistry. I liked the dynamics between them in the bedroom. There were some heated well written encounters that made for a nice break from the crazy that the killer was bringing to the table. I am happy to say that both men actually talked many things out with each other and there was no miscommunication used as a plot enhancer which is greatly appreciated. The plot was already intense as is.
The author gave voice to her secondary characters. I liked how well rounded that made the story. All angles were covered but that also made for some slightly gruesome moments, so I hope you have strong constitution, folks. The climax of the story happened around 80% mark that gave author time to tie up loose ends but what I didn't get was the explanation of the supposed personal connection that was alluded to throughout the book between Tony and the killer. It was left unexplained and I was left wanting. This was a well written story with a good amount of steam and suspense, gamut of emotions ranging from guilt to incredible rage, passionate love to gut wrenching devastation - very enjoyable and felt in the words written on the pages. The police work and procedures were well described and realistic and added to the grittiness of the story. Overall, 4 solid stars.

5.0 out of 5 stars Thrilling ride!!
This book has a lot of mystery & suspense revolving around the search for a serial killer, known as the Bow Tie Killer or BTK. He tortures his victims before killing them, so the graphic description of what he does & the condition of the bodies when they are found is not for the faint of heart.
Anthony is the lead detective on the case & his boyfriend Flynn is a journalist who has publicly made statements that he would like to tell BTK's story. BTK seems to have some kind of vendetta against Anthony, so he kidnaps Flynn & terrorizes him. He returns him unharmed, but sends Flynn emails with clues to his identity & about his victims. He threatens to kill Anthony if Flynn reveals this information, so Flynn is torn as what to do.
BTK always manages to stay one step ahead of the police. Then new information is given to Anthony by a doctor who suspects his boyfriend is BTK & it's a race against time to track him down & arrest him.
This book had me on the edge of my seat. I couldn't put it down. I'm a fan of Susan Mac Nicol's books & she did not disappoint! There's also some hot sex with Anthony & Flynn, with a little bondage added in too!
