Elfling: An Elves & Urchins Historical Fantasy for Teens Kindle Edition

4.6 out of 5 stars 36 ratings

SHE MUST FIND HER FATHER… OR DIE.

Alone on the streets of London, young Serapia Ravena seeks her father, her only hope of survival. But he hides a dark secret, one that threatens his very life and his very soul. The search for his salvation will carry Serapia to the very heart of the wild places and bring her face to face with her own mysterious heritage.

If you love tales of redemption and second chances, good and evil, elfin and dragonets, you’ll love this heart-warming fantasy in the tradition of J.R.R. Tolkien and C.S. Lewis. Winner of the 2019 ‘Teen’ Catholic Press Association Book Award, ELFLING also spent a month at No. 1 on Authonomy’s ‘Editor’s Desk.’

Full content visible, double tap to read brief content.

Corinna Turner has been writing since she was fourteen and likes strong protagonists with plenty of integrity. Although she spends as much time as possible writing, she cannot keep up with the flow of ideas, for which she offers thanks—and occasional grumbles!—to the Holy Spirit. She is the author of over twenty-five books, including the Carnegie Medal Nominated I Am Margaret series, and her work has been translated into four languages. She was awarded the St. Katherine Drexel award in 2022.

She is a Lay Dominican with an MA in English from Oxford University and lives in the UK. She used to have a Giant African Land Snail, Peter, with a 6½” long shell, but now makes do with a cactus and a campervan.

I really enjoyed Elfling by Corinna Turner. I've been wanting to read it for some time. Turner's writing style has a depth that really envelops a reader. Her story is extremely imaginative and unique, her characters so colorful and satisfying, and you just don't want to put the book down. She is definitely one of my favorite authors. I did find the ending somewhat abrupt, but I'm finding that's part of Turner's style. Leaves the reader wanting more. Elfling is a fantasy that I think teens 15 and older would really enjoy. I absolutely recommend it.

Knowing that I can safely let my children read a book without fear of exposing them to immoral ideas so often found in children's literature is huge for me. I can't preread everything, so its nice to find books like this that I can trust to be decent while also engaging my kids' love of reading. Bonus that it is fantasy, a genre so often full of questionable content. My daughter loved loved this book. Highly recommend.

Few authors are as blessed with creativity as Corinna Turner. Whether it be her incredible dystopian series - I am Margaret, her middle-grade novel – Mandy Lamb, her Jurassic-type short story Drive, or this YA fantasy novel, she always does a masterful job of creating new, unique worlds. The details she includes, such as new words, complicated technologies, and realistic histories, is impressive.
Elfling is the story of Serapia who after the death of her mother has been forced to fend for herself on the unforgiving streets. With her small dragonet along for the adventure, she embarks on a quest to find her father, only to learn that he is dying. This leads Serapia on a search for elves and healing powers.
There are some elements of sorcery, but it is made very clear that this is evil. I did think the middle of the story bogged down just a little through her long journey and the flashbacks of resurfacing memories. But I really liked the strong themes of good vs. bad and that Serapia prayed and believed in God. I think older teens who like fantasy novels will thoroughly enjoy this very imaginative story.

GREAT BOOK! I don't know which I want more... the sequel to this book or the next "I am Margaret" book. (Check out that series from the same author, you will not be disappointed.)
This book follows the life of a forgotten princess who is currently a beggar on the street's of old London England.
To tell you more would to reveal the story... ☺

This book was very different from a lot of fairy tales in a good way. The author has an intriguing way of writing which keeps the reader entertained and engrossed in the book.

I love whatever Corrina Turner writes no matter what genre. Her strong Catholic faith is never more than a keystroke away from whatever topic she is on. Good fantasy story. Don't miss the I Am Margaret series if you haven't read it!

It’s Britain, but not as you know it. If J.R.R.Tolkien couldn’t convince you that elves were Catholic, maybe Corinna Turner will! I look forward to discovering more of this world!

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent fantasy novel

This is the seventh book by Corinna Turner I have read. Previously I had read her famous novel "I Am Margaret" (a futuristic dystopy), one of her series on revived dinosaurs (science fiction), and four in her series about "Friends in High Places" (lives of saints adapted to young people in our time).

In this book the author deals with a different genre: Fairy, the world of longaevi, more or less superposed to real life, a little in the line of The Lord of the Rings. Her elves, in fact, remind me of Tolkien's elves, although those described here have a limited lapse of living, albeit long.

The novel deals with important subjects, such as the possibility of repentance (which some characters consider impossible), the unacceptability of further sin (whatever the cost), and the offering of one's life for the salvation of another person.

1.0 out of 5 stars Strong occult content!
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on September 1, 2019
While I have really enjoyed other works by Corinna Turner, I felt downright betrayed by this one.
Having been looking forward to reading it on holiday, I found it to be exceedingly dark and containing a great deal of strong occult content.
Extremely disappointing and more than a little disturbing.
