D.R. Bailey was raised in a family of bibliophiles. From an early age, he developed eclectic tastes in fiction including Sci-Fi, Romance, Crime, and the Classics. Some of his favourite authors are still Gerald Durrell, Jane Austen, Peter James, Ellis Peters, and Isaac Asimov. He began his writing journey at the age of eleven with a fictional story about his toy teddy bear clan. To date, he has published four major fictional series. Apart from writing, Bailey has engaged in several different careers and says that these life experiences have all contributed greatly to his penchant for storytelling.

Bailey’s most successful series is his WW2 Aviation Thriller, The Spitfire Mavericks, published by Sapere Books. It features spies, thrilling action-packed aerial combat, romance, and more. The series features a maverick crew of pilots thrown out from every squadron. The hero of the hour, Flying Officer Angus Mackennelly, endeavours to save the day in a series of thrilling adventures. The series has been a best seller on multiple Amazon lists in several countries and still rides high in the charts.

Following the success of the Mavericks series, Bailey has now written another WW2 Aviation Thriller series also published by Sapere Books, The Secret Sirens. The series poses the fictional question of what if women flew into combat with the RAF in WW2. The series features exciting secret missions by the Sirens squadron, spies, intrigue and more. Strong female leads combine with some great storylines to bring the reader an adventure to keep the pages turning.

Bailey has also penned and independently published five full-length crime novels in the DI Gallway series which is a genre he is particularly fond of. The stories contain a heady mix of crime, suspense, humour, steamy romance and much more. Bailey has also tackled some controversial and topical subjects surrounding the Catholic Church. The stories are set in Ireland, and Bailey confesses to having a great affection for the Irish.

Bailey has also independently published The Innocent Killing, and four other books in a Legal Drama series featuring a fictional barrister in Dublin called Bernadette Mackenna. This new series is a steamy spicy mix of legal drama with a strong element of same-sex romance.

The Spitfire Mavericks, The Secret Sirens, DI Gallway Investigates, and Bernadette Mackenna Investigates will hopefully continue for many more books to come. Bailey pledges to continue writing for as long as he can. Bailey is dedicated to excellence and writes with passion but at the same time tries to make his words accessible to those of all persuasions, sometimes shocking perhaps, but never dull.

Thoroughly enjoyed this novel. It was captivating and I had a difficult time putting it down until I had finished it. A sexy, fun, heart tugging read. Highly recommend.

This is a steamy legal novel with strong female characters and a heartbreaking case to consider.

D.R. Bailey has given us a lovely, complex main character in Bernadette Mackenna. Bernadette is a tough as hell lawyer with a foul mouth and strong compassion for her clients! The F word is her favorite word! I love her bold, fun attitude and her flaws. She has great relationships with the other characters in the book and they feel very real to me! The relationship with her business partner was absolutely the best – he the skinflint and her the flashy lawyer! They were perfect. Even the people she doesn’t get along with feel genuine. The characters were my favorite part of the book for sure!

The case she was compelled to take was heartbreaking. After all the things the defendant had to go through, then being arrested for a (justifiable?) crime, really had my heartstrings. I’ve seen many situations like this in the news and crime shows I watch, but Bailey did an excellent job of weaving twists and turns as well as showing how a lawyer manages a case like this with compassion, thoroughness, and passion.

So, now, I’d like to address the relationship between Bernadette and her love interest. This was the definition of a whirlwind and part of the reason I felt that way is because time was hard for me to keep up within the story. It is implied that it takes a long time to get a case to court but the relationship between the women is felt more like a daily, all the time thing and that made me feel it was a super quick development. The characters also give me that feeling because they regularly discuss their concerns about how fast things are going.

Now, I am not a prude. I read erotica and I certainly write sex into my own books all the time. I can say, however, that this book had too much sex for me. I believe the women loved each other so much and wanted to be physical, which is great, but in the story, most of the love scenes were actually written in instead of just presented in a way that would imply that lovemaking happened. I like a good mix of reading the actions of the lovemaking and just being led to understand that the characters are going to make love.

The other thing about the sex was that I really wanted to feel more about the “love” that the characters were in but it was hard to overlook the very strong physical connection they had and the nonphysical love and attraction they had for each other felt secondary. There were scenes where the women talked about each other, got to know each other, and discussed their feelings but they were a bit overshadowed by the physicality, in my opinion.

Overall, this story was good. I really loved all the characters, found them well written and realistic. The crime highlighted in the book was deep, layered, and satisfying. Bernadette is an excellent character and I do look forward to the future books in this series!

More than just a tough lady lawyer. Much more than a rainbow flag.

Bernadette is uniquely Bernadette- lady, lawyer, attitude and a heart a bit more bruised from the past than she might like to think

Situations and people that seem too good to be true usually are

The intense and dramatic opening to the telling of her adventures

The Innocent Killing. Hmm. My thoughts? Intriguing, heart-wrenching, thought-provoking and sexy as Hades!
The ending? Oh, no. I can not disclose lest you hunt me down and slap my face! You will find it intriguing as well…
I see D. R. Bailey has the next installment of the Bernadette Makenna Cases. I am going to treat myself again…
BTW, being of Irish descent, I enjoyed the colorful ambience of Dublin; the streets, cuisine and the lively banter! I googled a lot while I read the book to make it more vivid! I recommend doing the same! Enjoy the book!

“You’re nothin but a Bowsie!” In American, (LOL) your character is most questionable.

3.0 out of 5 stars 3 stars for the Law& Order SUV-like storyline, falls flat on sapphic romance
Reviewed in Canada on February 18, 2023
This was a hard one for me to read as it felt like I was reading two distinctly different stories within the one novel. The first story I like a lot. Bernadette the brilliant and compassionate lawyer defending a sensational murder case with her client Oonagh being a victim herself of years of sexual abuse and violence. This story had great character development and detail. It was well thought out and descriptively written. I liked all the characters who worked closely with Bernadette especially Imogen. The office antics and friendship were really great to read. I was emotionally involved in the story and could hardly wait get through the twists and turns of the plot to find out how it all concluded.

However the other storyline - the romantic tryst being Bernadette and Eve seemed disjointed and disconnected. There was no emotional attachment- it was just sex. It felt forced and out of place with the other storyline. If fact the kinky sexual parts seems out of taste after reading a chapter on the abuse Oonagh experienced as a victim of sexual assault, physical abuse and rape.

When I finally finished the book, I noticed that the author was male, and it might explain the disconnect, as well as the constant use of the words bitch and witch throughout the novel. I mean, I don’t believe sapphic relationships use the term witch and bitch so flagrantly or as terms of supposed endearment. It was felt so wrong.

So while I throughly enjoy the one story line - reminiscent of Law and Order Special Victims Unit, the other so called romantic overtly and overly sexual part was a big thumbs down.

I give this 3 stars only for the lawyer storyline.

5.0 out of 5 stars Accomplished first Lesbian novel and first Spin-off for D.R. Bailey
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on September 8, 2020
Being a fan of the author's Inspector Gallway books I was highly suspicious what a "spin-off" would be like and if it was actually working. The book is also set in Dublin so we're not far away from the "Foxhunters" and there are references found to it in the book which are endearing. Bernadette is a power woman but also vulnerable and has her own little package of past disappointment tightly bundled on her back. Her new lover manages to untie that bundle and bring out the real Bernadette who learns to trust again and to enjoy her new relationship and plenty of sex. The author knows how to describe even small intimate details but that's become part of his style and he does it very well and his fans would expect it by now. We are also educated in different techniques like "Kabuki". Not sure I'd try that at home though! Bernadette's personal life is woven around the story of a girl that had been kidnapped when she was 6 and killed her kidnapper. Again, the details with which the author describes the imprisonment of the girl, Oonagh, are incredibly detailed so that the reader is totally there with the girl in her cell where she was kept for 10 years until she escapes and kills her keeper. The prosecution charges her with murder and it's Bernadette's job to lessen this sentence. During the trial many interesting revelations which bring new leads. Again my hat off to the author for writing about the court proceedings in such great detail and with a lot of knowledge. I was hooked from the first page and found it hard to put the book down. A very accomplished first Lesbian novel for the author, a first coutroom drama and a first spin-off. Very well done. I hear that the second book is in the pipeline and I can't wait!

4.0 out of 5 stars Legal thriller with adult themes
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on February 9, 2021
This book gives a lovely flavour of Dublin and Irish legal proceedings. The court case is an intriguing one and keeps you reading. Bernadette’s character is well developed and believable, successful but still racked with insecurity. The relationship between her and her junior is charming as they compare notes about their gay / straight adventures but I found Bernadette’s lover a little too perfect, albeit with an intriguing fetish! A skilled author who guides you through smoothly, so if you like a legal thriller with adult themes, you will enjoy this.

3.0 out of 5 stars court room drama with side romance
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on January 16, 2022
A well written story with a good knowledge of court room procedures

For me there was too much sex and not enough of the main story, I was expecting a few twists and turns in what seemed a straightforward case but these never materialised.

5.0 out of 5 stars An exciting trip in to Bernadette's world!

I totally enjoyed this story. In fact it was so engrossing that I couldn't sleep so I had to switch to a biography of Julie Andrews in order to get some shut-eye! Fast-paced, intriguing legal case, with characters you can really warm too.
I look forward to the next book in the series!
