Review

"This was non stop surgers and crawlerz and epic battles for literal life and limb! The battleground is everywhere. All they want is a safe haven and they'll fight to find it!
The characters are uniquely individual so that when one is lost to the "zombies" you really feel it. The gore istop notch and the surgers and crawlerz are brought alive with R SMerritt's descriptive genius! Don't miss this one!"

Living in a lighthouse as a child led me early to a love of reading. Despite what you may have been told, the life of a lighthouse keeper’s son is not all glamour and parties. There's a lot of time when there really isn’t much to do besides wonder if the fog horn has finally made you deaf — or watch your dad pull fishing lures out of various parts of people’s bodies. (You'd be amazed!)

I read. I read a lot.

At school, we had a "reading caterpillar" that stretched around the room — each book you finished earned a new link. My caterpillar grew so large they had to give me two colors because mine started to look more like a worm! I devoured C.S. Lewis before moving on to Tolkien, and reading has been a huge part of my life ever since.

Nowadays, I’m drawn to alternate realities by authors like S.M. Stirling, and my guilty pleasure is zombie novels. I just can't seem to get enough of them.

I love exploring how ordinary people rise to meet extraordinary challenges — how the struggle to survive can harden, break, or ultimately forge something stronger within them. I enjoy the journey of flawed heroes: those who once worried about paying the phone bill, now fighting to keep themselves and others alive when civilization collapses.

These stories speak to something primal within us all.

I’m excited to share these journeys with you. Thanks for reading!

This series keeps you on your toes. The spin on how the crawlerz and sergers come to be is both ancient and terrifying. These are not your average zombies and the story line becomes believable in a scientific scenario. The characters are warm and endearing but also witty. I enjoy the play on known fictional stories. I think I would be all sorts of partially “mad” in all these situations as well.

Surprisingly well written. Edge of your seat scary. Yet the humor is relieving and rears its delightful head in every chapter.. The only reason I dont give 5 stars is because of the predictable politicans and
bureaucrats. The heros are well developed and likable. In book 3 I guess the reader will find out what happened to the VP (hopefully hes dead).
Okay I'm plunging back in. Looking forward to my next read! Delighted, constant reader Tracy.

Finally a fast paced, action packed book. I finished book one, but never picked up book two. I’m questioning my sanity now.
Anywho… Here’s my review, no spoilers.
There’s never a dull moment in this book. No downtime or lull in the pace. The main characters were separated but are now back together again so no more back and forth on who’s doing what. This series is one of my favorite zombie genre series. I say zombie ambiguously, you could put this in a plague type post apocalyptic category. It’s my favorite zombie series because Merritt has a knack for fast paced action without losing the storyline. The characters are still incredibly well developed and relatable. There are very inventive moments in this book that gave it seasoning. I can’t say too much without bringing spoilers into it, but it’s very very much worth the read. Merritt has me spoiled, so the last few slow paced book series I’ve read, their book #2’s will be on hold for a while.
It’s exciting, it’s gory, it has a splash of military, and while the scary isn’t on an Alexander Gordon Smith level, it’s still pretty scary at times.

I’m absolutely captivated by the storyline and think it’s a great new take on the overdone zombie apocalypse genre. I read the first book in a day and this one in about a week. I’m fully committed to the series at this point. The only thing that drives me crazy is that the author didn’t bother having anyone edit it for grammatical errors. It’s not like it’s intentionally poor grammar meant to read in the voice of a first person character—it’s just downright poor grammar. For most people, I’m sure it’s something that they can overlook quite easily. However, I’m one of those people who can’t help but fixate on every sentence fragment or misuse of an apostrophe or lack of commas. It drives me absolutely crazy and I don’t understand why the author doesn’t care about it. I honestly thought (or was hoping) it was just going to be the first book that the author didn’t have proofread and that, given the success (and criticism in the comments about the grammar) of the first book, he would make more of an effort on the subsequent books to publish the next ones as grammatically correct as possible. Maybe the third book will have addressed the grammar mistakes.

The story has lots of engaging attributes. Many of the character name-jokes are stupid, but it’s overall a pretty decent universe. That said, the author seems to have done zero editing, omitting punctuation and ending up with a constant barrage of both incomplete and run-on sentences. It’s not that I don’t recommend the book, I do for the most part, but I recommend more that the author spends some time reading what he’s written before inflicting it on us.

I loved the way that this story began but I would have liked it better if that part of the story had a little more detail to it.

If I'm honest book one was hard to get into BUT it soon turned it to a great start to this story . Book 2 is such a ride. None stop action, lots of humour. It's definitely a page turner. The characters are brilliant I love the way everyone interacts . I'm very excited to read the next instalment.
