From the Back Cover

For over a decade, JD Devereaux's son has been raised to think his father is dead. But he's not. At least, not yet.

Private investigator Sydney Brennan agrees to track down Devereaux because she'd do anything to give her friend a chance at knowing his father. Of course, Sydney believes the most dangerous thing she'll face in the Florida Panhandle is memories of her most recent investigation. She couldn't be more wrong.

Devereaux is a man on the run. He doesn't want Sydney's help, dodging her at every turn, and he refuses to tell her who's after him or why. Soon dead bodies start dropping, and Sydney isn't about to let Devereaux become the next victim. But when they're outgunned and outmaneuvered, will Sydney's quick wits and stubborn resolve be enough to keep them alive?

A recovering criminal attorney, Judy K. Walker has enough spare letters after her name (and student loan debt) to suggest that insatiable curiosity is something fictional Tallahassee PI Sydney Brennan inherited from her creator. Fortunately, Judy’s curiosity rarely involves murders.

Born and raised in West Virginia, Judy returned to her roots in the Appalachian supernatural thriller Dead Hollow trilogy (Prodigal, Founder, and Heir). Now she's back at work on the next Sydney Brennan book.

Judy writes from her home in rainy East Hawaii, where she is surrounded by husband, feral pigs, and assorted geckos.

MY RELATIONSHIP WITH SYDNEY BRENNAN: Many authors say their characters are their alter egos, doing the things they've always wanted to do in the ways they wish they could do them. At the risk of sounding shallow, my private investigator Sydney Brennan--with her shoulder-length, curly red hair--is my Hair Alter Ego. It's hard to tell from the ancient, faded, pre-digital photo at the right, but when I was very young I had red ringlets of curls. (And yes, shockingly, that is a book in my hands.) They never grew back after my first haircut, and my mother still laments their loss. The red hue is long gone and as for the curls, the best I can do now is a persistent cowlick and the occasional unruly wave.

I love the way Sydney thinks! She isn't romantically involved with anyone at this point but you are left with the idea that she is headed that way. The other characters are interesting and not without their own humor. JD (a new character) appears in this book and I have high hopes he will be in the next one. He and Sydney have something going on between them ( could be a budding romance) even though they may not yet realize it. The mystery surrounding JD has yet to be solved which means there has to be another Sydney book coming soon. I can't wait!!

Four stars because few things are perfect. However, the pace of the story, the relationship within it, the smart as s telling...all very readable while projecting the fact a young boy loved his mother and really wanted to know his father. The ups and downs occurred at just the right times to keep one reading.

I love complexity in all its forms. Sydney is a complex character and Ms Walker has populated Sydney' s world with equally complex individuals both good and bad. Those people then interacting in finely layered and interwoven puzzles that Sydney must unravel make for compelling reading.

Oh Sydney, how you do thrill! Once again she takes us on a rollercoaster ride and still leaves us wanting more at the end. Will she and JD ever find their way to love? Will Sydney ever quit pissing off Glenn? Can't wait to find out......

I'm hooked on Sydney Brennan and would give this book a fifth star if I could follow the murder plot a little better. I enjoyed the humor and the development of Sydney and her band of friends. So it's worth four stars to me. If you've developed a taste for Sydney, read this book. If you have not yet met her, start with one of the others.

The more Sydney Brennan novels I read, the better I like her -- and Judy K. Walker's excellent writing. Before I proceed to Book 4, I'll pause only to advise newbies to start with Book 1. They need to experience the thrills of Book 1 to make THIS novel even more thrilling. And, toward the end, even scarier....
