River Bound: A Sydney Brennan Novella (Sydney Brennan PI Mysteries Book 6) Kindle Edition

4.6 out of 5 stars 64 ratings

Is it bad luck to get held at gunpoint on a first date?

Sydney Brennan isn’t exactly the outdoors type, but the Tallahassee PI can’t say no when her investigator friend Mike Montgomery asks her on an unconventional first date. A lazy day canoeing down an idyllic Florida Panhandle river, with Mike providing a picnic lunch and most of the paddle power—what could go wrong? A lot, and this time it’s not even Sydney’s fault.

Soon Syd and Mike find themselves entangled in someone else’s imploding criminal enterprise, with no easy way out. Because when you’re River Bound, everyone gets swept downstream…

River Bound is a novella featuring the Florida private investigator with a knack for getting into trouble who doesn’t know when to quit. The Sydney Brennan PI Mysteries are a great fit for Sue Grafton fans who've already blown through the alphabet. (See below for reading order.)

So if you’re looking for a mystery with believable characters and “just enough humor to offset the dark,” click to download and read River Bound today!

About the Author

A recovering criminal attorney, Judy K. Walker has enough spare letters after her name (and student loan debt) to suggest that insatiable curiosity is something fictional Tallahassee private investigator Sydney Brennan inherited from her creator. Fortunately, Judy's curiosity rarely involves murders.
In addition to the ongoing series featuring the intrepid red-headed PI, Judy penned the Dead Hollow Trilogy (
ProdigalFounder, and Heir). The Appalachian crime thriller series with a dash of the paranormal taps into the heart of her West Virginia upbringing, evoking the shadowy mountains and hollows (properly pronounced hollers) whose absence she still laments.
Judy writes from her home in Hawaii, where she is surrounded by husband, dogs, cat, and assorted geckos. If she's not tapping away at her computer, she's probably sweeping tumblepuppies (the piles of accumulated critter hair).

A recovering criminal attorney, Judy K. Walker has enough spare letters after her name (and student loan debt) to suggest that insatiable curiosity is something fictional Tallahassee PI Sydney Brennan inherited from her creator. Fortunately, Judy’s curiosity rarely involves murders.

Born and raised in West Virginia, Judy returned to her roots in the Appalachian supernatural thriller Dead Hollow trilogy (Prodigal, Founder, and Heir). Now she's back at work on the next Sydney Brennan book.

Judy writes from her home in rainy East Hawaii, where she is surrounded by husband, feral pigs, and assorted geckos.

MY RELATIONSHIP WITH SYDNEY BRENNAN: Many authors say their characters are their alter egos, doing the things they've always wanted to do in the ways they wish they could do them. At the risk of sounding shallow, my private investigator Sydney Brennan--with her shoulder-length, curly red hair--is my Hair Alter Ego. It's hard to tell from the ancient, faded, pre-digital photo at the right, but when I was very young I had red ringlets of curls. (And yes, shockingly, that is a book in my hands.) They never grew back after my first haircut, and my mother still laments their loss. The red hue is long gone and as for the curls, the best I can do now is a persistent cowlick and the occasional unruly wave.

Just what I needed to distract me from the worries of the world! Judy Walker writes great stories that are easy to read, and have descriptive passages that allow me to feel like I am inside her head looking at the goings-on. And I loved that Sydney finally got on a date with Mike. I look forward to the future adventures of Sydney and of the conclusion of the Dead Hollow trilogy. She also gets the Tallahassee environment, social and natural down to a T. I binge read her books when they come out, and then enjoy passages on reread. Yay, Judy!!!!!

Get a big bottle of water and sit down to read this humid and terrifying thriller. A day on the river is no walk in the park. The mosquitos buzz and you'll wonder if dipping your hand over the side is so safe after all. Maybe not. A favor for a friend turns into a struggle one could never anticipate. Remember that water since you will be right there with them!

I love this series and have read every book and this one didn't let me down! While the story was a bit unusual, it was, nevertheless, full of energy, twists and turns and a thrilling adventure. Sydney is always wonderful and I can't wait for the next book in the series!

Irreverent, tough as nails, insecure mushball Sydney, doing what it takes, but always questioning her own moral compass to stay “good” in a bad world. I adore the fact that this is a “true” woman: all conflicted parts of a wonderful and unique whole, not an illusion of stereotypical perfection.

Great novella for a plane trip. I enjoyed seeing Sydney's relationship evolving with a good guy. She is a very human character, flaws and fears. I hate this part of the journey. I have read all that is available for now for this character.

A fun development in Sydney's private life turns deadly. Fun and easy reading, but like the rest of her books, never long enough! I really can't wait to read the next book, having read all six.

Another super Sydney book, but it went by way too fast. Now I have to find something to do until the next one comes out

I just love Syd. I grew up in Tallahassee so I feel right at home with her. In fact I can identify with her propensity to get into trouble. Hurry and write another Syd!
