A Malicious Midwinter: A Mt. Abrams Mystery (The Mt. Abrams Mysteries Book 5) Kindle Edition

4.3 out of 5 stars 86 ratings

Ellie Rocca knows that inviting best-selling author Beth Graves Riley to speak at the Mt. Abrams library will score major brownie points in her small community. What she doesn’t know was that a fast moving blizzard will keep Beth, and her assistant, in Mt. Abrams—specifically, at Ellie’s house. A minor inconvenience turns into a major headache as one secret after another reveals itself, including an alcoholic author, an unexpected ex-husband, and stolen stories. Ellie manages to keep her cool until Beth’s body is found behind a snow bank, and she realizes that the killer sat at her dinner table the night before. Sam thinks he’s knows whodunnit, but it’s Ellie who realizes the key to the killer is as simple as black and white.

Dee Ernst was born and raised in New Jersey, which explains a great deal about her attitude towards life. She loved reading at a very early age, and by the time she was ten she had decided to become a writer. It took a bit longer than she expected.

She went off to college, moved around a bit, had a job or two, a husband or two, and a daughter or two. It was the birth of her second daughter at the age of forty that got her thinking about what to do with the rest of her life. That was when she decided to give writing a real shot.

Dee loved chick-lit and romantic comedy, but hated the twenty-something heroines who couldn’t figure out how to go and get what they wanted. She began to write about women like herself — older, confident, and with a wealth of life experience to draw upon. She got an agent but no sales, and took the plunge into self-publishing in 2010.

In 2012, Better Off Without Him became an Amazon bestseller. She signed with Montlake Publishing, which went on to re-release Better Off Without Him and launch A Slight Change of Plan in 2013.

2016 will bring two ‘firsts’ for Dee — a series of cozy mystery novellas, and the release of her first full-length novel with Lake Union Publishing, Stealing Jason Wilde, in June.

She is still in New Jersey, where she writes full-time. She lives with husband #2, daughter #2, a few cats and a needy cocker spaniel. She loves sunsets, long walks on the beach, and a really cold martini.

I so enjoy keeping up with this "family". It gets to where they start to become a part of you. So glad they are doing well. I sure wasn't sorry to see the author meet her demise at all but I sure didn't see the whodunit coming! Keep 'em coming!!!!

Put anything by Dee Ernst in front of me and I will read it. The latest in the Mt Abrams mysteries is no exception. My favorite book in the series to date, I totally mis-guessed the guilty party, usually something I can figure out pretty easily. This is a short, easy read, but what it lacked in length, it more than made up for in personal drama and moral dilemma. While there was no actual cliffhanger, Dee left us with an unresolved dilemma, and I am ready to start hounding her for the next book to see how it will all be handled. I received an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review, but as you can see, I have also purchased it. (Writers do write for a living, you know...)

I love Dee Ernst's books! I've read all of this series, but feel this book would also be enjoyable by itself. The author's description of the snowstorm was spot on for a small town with residents and guests trapped by the weather. Residents were without electricity, businesses were closed for days, people were without heat, and everyone was truly " snowed in." But there was a definite camaraderie among everyone with neighbors helping neighbors, strangers reaching out to make sure everyone was ok, and a sense of accomplishment in preparing meals and staying wrapped up in front of fireplaces. I definitely felt like I was experiencing the storm right along with the book characters. I have to admit that I am definitely attached to the characters in this series. Elle is an older woman with a grown daughter and a teenager, divorced, and has a beginning-to-be-serious boyfriend. She also has a great sense of humor and an uncanny ability to solve mysteries. This book is hard to put down, but definitely enjoyable. I highly recommend it!

As usual, Dee Ernst delivered a surprising murder mystery. All our favorite characters are back, especially Ellie and Sam. Love that couple! Add a blizzard (I live in Maine; it's accurate!), characters you want to hate, and a murder, and she has another winner! Grab some wine and munchies and enjoy the latest installment of the Mt. Abrams Mysteriey!

I just love Ellie and Sam. I have so enjoyed the murder and "blizzard" in this novel and greeting all the friends and neighbours of the town. Although these tales can be read alone they are best enjoyed from the beginning to appreciate all the residents little foibles. Can't wait for the final book but oh how I'm going to miss visiting Mt. Abrams.

I love the humour in the books, also in the Mt Abrahams books, the clever plots and characterisation. Just find them a bit short, I'd like ' more meat on the bone' .
