A fabulous regency take with a wolffish twist

A fabulous regency take with a wolffish twist
I love Regency era romances and shapeshifters (wolves are my favorite) so this was perfect for me! The drama starts right away, and the twists and turns continues throughout the book. The characters are perfection, so many different personalities that work so well together. You can’t help but love the heroine, and how she tames the hero. Finish it off with a steamy ending and all is right with the world. This is the first in a series, and I’m looking forward to reading the next one! Highly recommend!

This book combines Regency romance and paranormal romance, two of my favorites. I love the characters. Her writing style is just wonderful. The words flow beautifully and smoothly, without any jarring awkward spots. Some of her phrases are so lyrical that they practically dance off the page. The story is interesting and has both some really funny and some very poignant scenes. I enjoyed the book very much.

Will he be able to make her see right for the future of his kind...

While I am first a historical romance reader, I do like a good paranormal tale so when I saw both categories set in one book, I jumped on the occasion to read it.
And this was an unexpected read for sure.
It has the slow pace of many historical stories and the danger vibes of some PNR tales but it lacks true actions, it looks like more a day to day recounting of life in this strange estate than a pack’s dynamic with a alpha who subjugated at every turn his subjects.

The opening scene sets the story in regency England with an over the top alpha hero taking the marriage mart by storm and a heroine bordering spinsterhood who has others views than wedding bliss for her future.
While I liked Felicity immediately as she is a woman who after loosing everything tried to find a way to better her life and refuses to give up because she is said to, Lowell is an other affair, so set on his alpha position, he quite uses and sometimes overuses his power as such. Even by trying to subdue the heroine to bend to his desire. Luckily she is rather immune to his will-stealing aura.

So when he fails to get her to follow her voluntary, he kidnaps her and thus ruins her in the eyes of the ton.
It is from there that the story takes its turn on the paranormal side. As Felicity now navigates an unknown place surrounded by people who appear to be more than whom she thinks they are.
She is a force to be reckoned as she does no cry nor shout, she refuses to give up and plots alternative exit ways.
Lowell is at loss, completely lost about what to do with this unexpected twist in his mate’s hunt. He not really anticipated a human, so he does not know how to react around her, how to break the news he is not what he seems to be nor his people. So he most often than never runs away instead to having to answer her questions.
I understand the answers were not easy to present but slowly offering clues could have soften the blow.

The story touches many tropes, like the vile uncle, he was painted a bit to flatly greedy. Then where is the missing horse. Will the side characters have their own story or will it focus on another Duke...
The part around and after the wedding was too long, I felt like the story dragged for length and length as nothing truly happens along these pages.
3.5 stars rounded up because it has many promises of a good series but needs to find its marks to sit it in both genres.

This was a wonderful premise - put shapeshifters in Regency England. And it was done well enough. This moved a little slow for me. It was also a bit tedious there towards the end with all the explaining of how things work in their world. However, Alfred has the driest sense of humor and had me cracking up. When he was in wolf form and Felicity was talking to him was precious!

The best thing about this book.
    The story!
The historical romance aspects are so very well done.
But then when the shape shifting lore and all that is at stake for everyone involved is brought to the fore. The relationship between our main characters, and the radical action of the Duke's kidnapping of his reluctant Duchess. Seems more than a necessary evil.
For her part. Felicity and her simple wish to live out her life as a horse breeder. Free of the machinations of her station creates the perfect foil for her Duke. And allow both a freedom from agenda. To get to know each other in all incarnations.
Every supporting character, right down to Mary mouse seemed lively and interesting enough to have their own story.

And the fact that so much importance is placed on the fact that the masculine and feminine must be balanced and equal. Is a thing of beauty.

    Reviewer's Note
A Wolf In Duke's Clothing is the first in a related series. It may be read as a standalone. But is recommended to be enjoyed as part of its intended collection.

I really, really wanted to like this book. It came highly recommended. The premise was fun, the characters interesting. However, I couldn’t get past the clunky writing and the run on sentences. The average sentence was 4-5 lines long. The author also is overly descriptive. At one point she spent half the page describing the heroine’s memory/reaction to a painting that was irrelevant to the story line or characterization. I like a book with a large vocabulary, but this one went over the top and felt pedantic. This could have been an excellent book with top notch editing.

I felt joy every time I could read it! Reread it several times.

    A paranormal Regency era romance
with a lot of humor. In other words Fun!

An Alpha Duke who is trying to find his true love for his own sake but als
o for his pack. The others cannot have offspring until the alpha finds a love match and has children so will they. There are no children at the beginning.

A very unique story for a paranormal. I will watch for the authors books!

Persistent mistakes broke the spell of this book for me so that I could not finish it. Just one example: The heroine is supposed to be an expert rider and horse breeder, but "Five miles ... That was two hours' hard ride, if one was escaping, and she would never ask that of a horse she didn't know." Since when would it take a horse two hours to go five miles? A horse could cover that distance at a gentle walk -- no hard ride needed. Actually, most humans can walk five miles in under two hours. Many other errors too, so for me: DNF. I'd give this one star but I don't like to do that, and the writing is okay if you can avoid applying everyday logic while you read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Loved it!

Now I went into this book unsure because normally when you add the paranormal to your typical historical romance it's either going to be fantastic or absolutely dire, but I was happy to give it a go! And thankfully this was one of those fantastic ones! I loved it so much I've actually already bought book two and I'm definitely going to get book three once I've read that.
I really liked Alfred and Felicity, separately and as a couple, their interactions made me smile and kept me reading. In fact, I completely disregarded the rules of a readalong and read it in one sitting, I just didn't want to put it down. I really liked watching them get to know each other because Alfred knows she's his mate and he can't tell her so watching him try to show getting to know her and figuring out who she is besides that instinctual knowledge that she's his was really lovely. And the fact that the whole pack was trying to help her settle and let her know that she's valued by them was also really sweet to watch.
And I really enjoyed getting to know all the side characters too, every member of Alfred's Pack was brilliantly thought out and I loved seeing how they all worked together to keep the pack working and safe. I've definitely seen a couple of characters that I hope we might get books for at some point, fingers crossed for that because Susanna Allen's writing style is a joy to read. But this is definitely a series I will keep an eye on, we have three books currently and I'm hoping Susanna has plans for more!

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing Book!

A Wolf in Duke's Clothing is Book 1 of the Shapeshifters of Beau Monde Series.

We follow the lives of Felicity, who is an older unmarried woman (according to old Regency expecations) and Arthur, a Duke with a secret who has been away for a while.

Felicity is a strong-willed woman for the period and takes no prisoners. She is an animal lover and extremely caring towards those she holds dear.

Unfortunately, her family is also trying to marry her off... but she doesn't want to.

Arthur is strong, and although he is a Duke, he is incredibly compassionate towards his family and friends.

When these two meet, it is the start of a rollercoaster romance ride filled with laughs, shock, and ultimately a mystery surrounding inheritence that needs to be solved!

This is both a Shifter but also a Historical Romance with Susanna giving extreme attention to all the little details at the time - even the wording feels older so it took me a couple of chapter for my brain to shift back into 'Classics mode' but when that happened, I struggled to put this book down.

Highly entertaining and brilliantly written, Susanna has taken a modern shifter theme and applied it to times gone by, which is enthralling, endearing, and extremely unique.

I highly recommend this book, and I can not wait to continue with the series!
