A Most Unusual Duke: A Steamy Shapeshifter Regency Romance (Shapeshifters of the Beau Monde Book 2) Kindle Edition

4.3 out of 5 stars 213 ratings

Bridgerton meets New Moon in this sparkling shapeshifter Regency romance mixed with humor, steamy chemistry, and fantasy.

The Duke said he'd never get married…

The Prince Regent insists his cousin and fellow bear shifter Arthur Humphries, the Duke of Osborn, take a mate to ensure the continuation of their species. After all, Arthur is an Alpha, so he must set a good example. The duke would very much prefer to continue his comfortable bachelor lifestyle, but the Prince Regent is not a bear to be poked.

Beatrice, the widowed Marchioness of Castleton, is in possession of a powerful secret. She knows all about Shifters, her horrible late husband being one of them. At any moment, Beatrice could reveal the secrets of the Prince and those like him—unless the Prince can make sure she marries another Shifter.

A marriage between the Duke of Osborn and Beatrice is far from ideal for either one, but at least they won't fall in love…right?

Witty, fantastical, and entirely unique, A Most Unusual Duke is perfect for readers looking for:

A delicious Regency romp with a paranormal twist

A devilishly handsome Alpha hero

A marriage of convenience

A magical world to sink your teeth into

Another Shapeshifter Romance Success
Shapeshifters of the Beau Monde continues with a new sleuth and new drama. If you read the first in the series, this overlaps a bit with their story. If not, don’t stress, you will still be able to follow along. If you’re a fan of the arranged/forced marriage trope, you’re going to love this. So much tension, so much excitement as the couple gets to know each other, and the groom’s family just adds to the fun. I loved witnessing the character development, especially with Beatrice. She’s the perfect heroine as she tries to figure out her new life. Which couple will be next? I cannot wait to read the third book in the series!

Arthur Humphries, The Duke of Osborn, and Alpha bear shifter, swore at the age of 6 yrs. old swore to never love, or become Alpha to his Sleuth/Clan after losing his mother and then seeing his Alpha father killed in a challenge for leadership.

Beatrice, the Widow Marchiones of Castleton, is a human who had the misfortune of being married to a crazed wolf shifter. Nicknamed Lady Frost by suitors she's be able to keep at a distance makes the mistake of trying to blackmail His Royal Highness, The Prince Regent George IV, who's also a bear shifter. George being a sneaky bear threatens Arthur with taking his nephews, and nieces away from his brother, and threatens Beatrice with death if they don't wed. Having no choice Arthur, and Beatrice enter into a 'White Marriage', or marriage of convenience.

What follows is seeing two enemies become friends as they get to know each other with the assistance of a motley crew of shifters to help them along the way. Arthur has to decide if he can become Alpha to his Sleuth as a threat against Beatrice becomes known. What can an Alpha do but protect the one he's come to love, claim her as his mate, and protect his clan from any threat.

Somehow this shifter/ historical kept my interest in a way that regular regencies haven't lately. A marriage of convenience between the icy Lady Frost, a court widow, and a duke shifter traumatized by the murder of his father years ago is required by the prince to rebuild the Duke's ancestral lands. There' a spark of attraction from the start, which grows as they work together.

In the historical romance genre, it is not unusual to find an excellent book opening a series which is followed by more lackluster stories. As the second in this series, A Most Unusual Duke, is even better than the initial novel. While the characters overlap, this couple is unique and appealing with their introduction and story arc brought out with excellent and truly witty writing. I discovered this author on Goodreads. Carry on!

The idea of two grumps falling in love is such a novel one these days in romance! The trend typically is to have one sunshiney characters who laughs and charms their way into the heart of the grumpy counterpart. However, in this story, we had two thoroughly grumpy grumps who had no giggles to spare and tolerated each other for quite some time. I loved the quiet angst that flowed between them for much of the novel, and I found myself forgetting that this book had an atmosphere of the paranormal. In fact, it made the paranormal feel...normal. While there were an array of shifters present in the story, they didn't shift often, and their mannerisms were just like everyone else. It was so interesting reading a paranormal from that perspective, thinking of how this is how things could actually be, if shifters were real. We wouldn't even realize if one worked alongside us!

The widowed Marchioness of Castleton, Beatrice, has been kept alive by keeping the closely guarded secret of the prince regent - that shifters are real and live among us. After discovering the secret by accident while married to her late husband, a man who blamed her for never begetting an heir, she seized the opportunity to survive by holding close valuable information and ensuring the prince would protect her from harm. But now he has called in the debt she owes him, threatening her loved ones if she doesn't obey, and she finds herself reluctantly marrying once more. Arthur Humphries, the Duke of Osborn, never had any intention of marrying, decided the carrying on the family line could be left to his younger brother. But even a duke must listen to a royal, and he is called upon to marry to continue their species and protect the land his father fought and died over. They are two people who have no interest in falling in love, and they spend most of their days apart. But when Beatrice discovers a shocking revelation, she realizes a different future could lie in front of her...if only she can convince her husband of the same.

I just adored the two grumps of this story. Beatrice was dubbed Lady Frost, for her cool demeanor and utter lack of interest in appearing appealing to the opposite sex. Arthur held up the walls in most ballrooms, watching all but dancing with no one. They were alike in so many ways, but neither really saw it until they were forced into each other's company. As Beatrice was given the run of his home, I loved seeing the change in her - the spark, the fire that came from her feeling needed and appreciated. It was funny watching Arthur become flabbergasted watching this woman who he believed to be without interest in anything show interest in reviving his home. There was a bit of hilarity in that she didn't find out what type of shifter he was for a while, and so she kept chatting with random animals thinking perhaps this one is him. When she finally did confront him, her calm demeanor served her well. As for Arthur, my favorite part of him was his inner bear. It had a mind of its own, often arguing with Arthur inside his head, and I was often on the bear's side. This is the second time now I have read a shifter book where I find the animal spirit's mind even more appealing than the human's mind, perhaps because it speaks without artifice. It's a rare thing and I love it.

I look forward to reading the next book in this series, which is teased at towards the end. It is sure to be as entertaining, if not more so, than this one.

This Book 2 in Susanna's Shapeshifters of the Beau Monde Series.

In this book, we follow Arthur, whose cousin has decided to play matchmaker and insists he marries Beatrice. Arthur and Beatrice's aren't all that fond of the idea...

What a book... I mean, Susanna is a cracking writer. I love how she mixes Regency Fiction with Shifter Romance in such a way you'd you were reading something written from the period.

The language and format of the sentences mirror that of the period, and so as I expected this, I didn't have any issues in jumping straight in!

I adore how Susanna creates her characters and develops them. In each book so far, we see the 2 main characters develop in some way or another.

In this story, we see how Arthur comes to terms with becoming an Alfa and how Beatrice realises that not all Shifter men are the same... (I'm saying no more!)

The story begins quite sad as we learn about the histories of both of these characters... in fact, the very first chapter was incredibly sad to me, and you could see how this shaped a young Arthur into who he was as an adult.

Beatrice has an equally sad past, and I loved how this shaped her into a very strong-minded woman.

This a fantastic story of love, loss, and finding yourself.

It is an absolutely fantastic book and I found it an enjoyable read.

Highly recommend, and I can't wait to read Book 3!

💜🐻 A Most Unusual Duke Read Along Book Review 🐻💜

No spoilers here as always but I just loved this book! 🥰

I am a true romantasy girlie at heart and this ticked all of my favourite boxes and more. It’s pulled me into the shifter-regency fanclub too which was a nice surprise!

    Some highlights for me below:

💫 I loved the scene setting and felt fully invested in the plot and world building from the start

💫The characters and their development throughout the book were my favourite thing about this story. From the main characters Duke and Beatrice to their family and supporting characters their interactions and emotions blossomed so well from start to finish 😍

💫The development of the Duke and Beatrice’s love had me hooked and giggling to myself at times. I loved how they were constantly interpreting what the other person was thinking completely wrong to start with. I also loved the Duke’s sassy true Bear shifter self and his internal monologue/ banter 🐻

💫 Not only was the regency-romantasty trope unlocked for me but this also had all of the best romance tropes that had me hooked including fated mates, slow burn, found family, one bed, forced proximity and a touch of enemies to lovers 🔥

This was my first read-along with @lovebookstours and I’m sad it’s over 🥲Thank you for having me and to @susannaawriter I can’t wait to read the other books in this series now! 💜

Okay, it’s official. I. Am. Obsessed. With this series. I’m currently firmly ensconced in my paranormal regency romance era.

I by no means wish to appear shallow *nudges glasses up nose* but the Duke of Osborn peaked my interest after his brief intro in Book 1. I must also stress this was in no way whatsoever related to his sheer presence in all its tall, dark, and growly glory *blushes*. Yet, Lordy, is it magnificent… *sighs*

It’s no secret that grumpy/sunshine is a Trope of Choice for me but grumpy/grumpy is next level, peeps! The banter between Beatrice and Arthur is *chef’s kiss*.

There were times in the story I wanted to put the book down and applaud Beatrice. When one’s power has been stripped from you, you have to take your wins where you can, and aided by her frosty alter ego she has mastered the art of survival. A marriage of convenience this may be, but our Beezy will not be defeated. Not when there’s the chance Arthur can make a long held dream come true.

The word building in this book/series is sumptuous and Little Angel Me was in full-on Swoon Mode over lore interwoven with ancient myths and legends alongside real-life historical characters. Let’s not even discuss what Little Devil Me was up to… *palms face*

Anyhoots, I digress. It’s not just the main characters I fell in love with. As far as I’m concerned I’m an honorary member of the Osborn Sleuth (and the Lowell Pack). I felt a natural affinity with salty Morag, I wanted to join in the teasing with Ben and Charlie, and don’t even get me started on little Ursella. That little cub was 99% responsible for the crying jags I had whilst reading. Emotional? Moi?!

A glorious evocative read which I am loathe to leave behind. *happy dances* And I don’t have to as Alwyn and Tabitha are next up. *rubs hands* Byyeee!

For me this book was a little difficult to read and follow the story initially. It’s definitely as described - very Bridgerton-esq in the way it’s written. I have not read the first book but do have every intention to go back and read it - I do think I would have understood the language more had I have read ‘A Wolf In Dukes Clothing’.

The concept and storyline was brilliantly executed. I loved the slow burn romance, reading about its growth was beautiful. Arthur and Beatrice’s marriage was really well thought through was enhanced by the shapeshifters and other themes woven throughout. I also loved their home and what they made of it.
