I Saw What I Saw: A Harmony Neighborhood Cozy Mystery - Book 1 Kindle Edition

4.1 4.1 out of 5 stars 70 ratings

Crime blogger, Sheila Sammartino, witnesses a murder, but the police disagree. Sheila knows better, and to prove it she will solve this herself, not just write about it.

The small town of Harmony’s number one Internet sensation is crime reporter turned blogger, Sheila Sammartino. Inquisitive, self-conscious and often clumsy in an oddly endearing way, everything is going great for Sheila until she stumbles into a murder mystery, and not as a reporter!

She witnesses a newcomer to the neighborhood, Arthur Jones, murdered in the alley next to Harry’s Bagel Shop. The police are quick to call it a mugging gone wrong, but Sheila saw what she saw. With the help of her outspoken former college roommate and her classically handsome new next-door neighbor, this trio take it upon themselves to get all the answers the police refuse to look for. Who was Arthur Jones after all? And who would want to kill him?

"Not everything is in harmony in the charming town of Harmony. Former crime reporter Sheila Sammaritino loves asking questions and getting the details of every story. When she witnesses a murder, she becomes part of an uncomfortable story about finding justice and restoring harmony to Harmony. A fast-paced mystery with humor and heart, a great first novel by Tony Garritano."
- Mary E. Koppel, popular author of the Denise Reed Mystery Series

“A playfully cynical, breezy treatment of murder, intrigue and collaboration by friends to overcome police indifference. A “page turner” written in a consistent and comfortably enjoyable style.”

Review

"With both humor and flair, Garritano weaves a tale that is both thrilling and unexpected. Each of the characters have a truly distinctive personality with their own quirks and unique characteristics. Sheila is a strong female protagonist with a perspective that is both down-to-earth and relatable. Touching on themes of racism and corruption, this mystery keeps the reader guessing as to who the murderer is, as Sheila doggedly follows each lead. This original story will be an enjoyable read for anyone looking to get lost in a mystery. Readers won't be able to stop until they've solved it themselves!"
By Maincrest Media

"What's amazing is just how funny and comedic this book is. The characters are all distinct and play off of one another, making this a surprisingly diverse cast of characters even compared to the fantasy novels we've read. Reggie, a former theater actor and love-interest of Sheila, turns out to be one of the most interesting characters we've read about in a while. The mystery, intrigue, and slapstick humor in this book really carries it. We couldn't wait to solve this mystery!"
By Outstanding Creator Awards

"Author Tony Garritano made what could have been a gruesome and triggering story into a light-hearted, brief and jovial one. Never have I been so chipper while reading about a murder. His simple way of describing the day to day activities, scenes, characters, and experiences lures you into a story that seems simple up front, but as the mystery continues to grow the easy storytelling ensures readers are never more than a step behind."
"I Saw What I Saw is a thrilling murder mystery that thrives on the back of its captivating protagonist and the fascinating riddle at the center of the story. Fans of young adult crime fiction stories will find this story interesting to follow as every step and every turn connects to the next unfolding event."

Awesome!
I SAW WHAT I SAW I enjoyed the trip when Shelia, Tania, and Reggie set out to solve a murder the police have conveniently labeled a failed mugging. As a former court reporter, Shelia has some training in deductive reasoning and with her staunch college friend, Tania, the two women are joined by a flirty newcomer, Reggie, to complete the circle of an eager, if unlikely, crime-solving trio. The dynamics between the friends provides comic relief against the background of a grisly crime. Determined to follow the clues while avoiding the concerted efforts of the authorities to shut down their unofficial and unconventional efforts draws the main characters closer together and even allows for a new romance in Harmony township. Skillfully written easy to understand. Not since the Dukes of Hazard has an informal, untrained trio of characters outwitted the good ole boys as smoothly as the three main characters, Shelia, Tania, and Reggie, do in “I Saw What I Saw”. When Shelia accidentally witnesses the murder of a stranger outside her favorite bagel shop, she’s stunned (although not surprised) that the police detective gets it wrong. Each member of the crime-detecting trio brings nuance to the other two so that the sum of the whole is greater than the parts. I particularly liked the camaraderie between the friends. I hope to read more of the series.

I enjoyed this first time effort from this new author. There is the need for some tightening up of the narrative but the writer will only get better as he masters his craft.
Great use of characters led by a determined Sheila who was shocked to witness a murder in the small sleepy town in which she lived. The other characters brought personality traits that made the story both interesting and humorous.
Having seen this murder, Sheila was shocked by the policy's refusal to see anything but a mugging gone wrong. She and her friends are determined to solve the murder although they come very close to breaking the law several times while trying to find the killers.
I love the whodunit effect. Throughout one door would close but Sheila would force another open only to have this one close too. Then finally we are treated with a surprise ending...while some readers may claim to have figured out who was responsible for the murder early on they would have to be geniuses to have done do. It is a very good twist in the tail that concludes the mystery.
Of course, in a fast paced short story there were aspects that did not ring true but that only adds to the storyline!
I strongly recommend this book for a cozy read , ignore the small flaws and simply enjoy the book.

I appreciate the first-person immediate perspective. Also that characters are three-dimensional, with quirks and imperfections.

That can run a little strong, as when people of a certain profession are portrayed, drawn like caricatures. But it makes for a fun read.

Characters and story and situations flowed and I appreciated that the author loves to write. He enjoys storytelling and that connects with me.

Just one thing, though, and maybe it's me and maybe it was meant to represent the flighty personality of the protagonist. I felt that for all the references to copy editing, this story could have used a line editor to smooth out repetitive points or make the writing more concise. But maybe that's me.
I guess I got caught up with the story to the point I wanted to rush the ending.

All in all I enjoyed this book and really enjoyed how much the author obviously loved writing it.

I Saw What I Saw was a quick but enjoyable amateur sleuth murder mystery with a great list of suspects. I loved the small town community feel of Harmony, and Sheila was a cute but clumsy character. There were times throughout the book that her antics were a bit over the top for me, but the book was overall entertaining.

The author wrote a solid plot that could use a little more development of the delivery. There were some verb tense changes within sentences that disrupted the flow occasionally and the dialogue tags could use a little more variety.

"I Saw What I Saw" is a solid new entry into the mystery fiction genre, combining current and important societal themes with a wonderfully quirky cast of characters you won't soon forget. Quick-paced, humorous, and engaging, this clever murder mystery will keep you guessing along the way. Sheila the protagonist -- a former journalist turned blogger and amateur crime fighter -- is smart, strong, and accident prone, and her antics with her motley crew of crime investigating cohorts are at times reminiscent of Lucy and Ethel. I really enjoyed the story, as well as the characters, and was sad to leave them behind when I finished this book! Fortunately, this is just the first in a planned new series by author Tony Garritano, so readers can look forward to more mystery-solving adventures with Sheila and her friends!

I loved this story. It’s everything a cozy mystery should be. The quirky characters are well drawn and lovable. The cat rules the household. For a crime journalist to investigate a murder is believable. I kept wondering who killed Arthur right up until the end.

I found the first few pages a little slow to get past, but the rest of the story is so exactly why we need to read a good cozy sometimes, that I can recommend this as a good mystery for to curling up in your favorite chair and ignoring the angst of the world.

I really enjoyed this book. The plot is interesting, the characters are becoming, it’s lighthearted, and the author adds a dash of humor when you least expect it. Overall, this book is an enticing mystery that kept me guessing and thinking about what was around the corner. The quaint town setting and appeal of the main character paved the way for warm, pleasant reading throughout the book. Things can move a bit quickly at times, but the fun and easy reading make it relaxing while simultaneously creating just the right amount of suspense. All in all, the book is well-structured, entertaining, and has a satisfying ending albeit the reader is left wondering what the next book in this series will bring!

This novel was a fun and entertaining read. It definitely held my interest throughout and easily kept me turning pages.

Sheila is a journalist who always wished for the “big” story, preferably the lead on a murder case, but her Editor wasn’t having it. After squashing her dreams, Sheila started her own online publication and made it a success. As she begins her usual day at her favorite bagel shop, Sheila’s life takes a drastic turn. She finally gets her chance at a murder, but it’s not to write about it; it’s to solve it since she is the lone witness.
Joining her in her quest for justice is her new neighbor, Reggie, and her best friend and copy editor, Tania. The trio bring lots of fun to the story.

If you like whodunnit’s and quirky characters, you should enjoy, I Saw What I Saw.

What would you do if you witnessed a murder? What if you were certain the police weren't doing everything in their power to solve it?

This happened to Sheila, an under appreciated journalist. After witnessing what seemed like two police officers deliberately kicking a man to death, in a racist attack, she tries to solve the crime herself with her good friend Tania and her new neighbour Reggie.

Her suspicions are raised by the seemingly lack of grief in the victim's mother. They embark on a crazy adventure to try and uncover the truth, meeting new people, and potential suspects along the way. Shelia has to be careful, if anything were to happen to her, who would look after her cat?

An intense thrilling ride with plenty of comedy embedded in. Worth a read I say.
