Memory Lane: A Sydney Brennan Novella (Sydney Brennan PI Mysteries Book 8) Kindle Edition

4.6 out of 5 stars 31 ratings

They should have left well enough alone.

Florida PI Sydney Brennan needs a break. She’s just finished an intense week on the road, right on the heels of a case that fundamentally changed her life in ways she hasn’t had time to process yet. (That’s in addition to nearly getting her killed.)

So an exhausted Sydney is doing her best to pass out in her favorite bar (no booze required) when her world tilts on its axis again. Someone she hasn’t seen in more than fifteen years walks through the door, and he asks her to take a little trip with him.

Their journey starts out simply enough—I just need to see her; she doesn’t even have to know we’re there—but soon they are tangled in a web of secrets and lies, threats and accusations. And the one person they wanted above all else to keep safe is suddenly in jeopardy.

Because there is nothing more complicated, and dangerous, than finally facing the past.

Memory Lane is the eighth installment in the Sydney Brennan PI Mysteries, featuring the Florida private investigator with a knack for getting into trouble who doesn’t know when to quit. These books stand alone but are best enjoyed in order, starting with Back to Lazarus.

Please don’t read this book if you haven’t read Grave Truth. You won’t have trouble following the story, but Memory Lane’s entire premise is a big spoiler for Grave Truth, and no one wants that.

A recovering criminal attorney, Judy K. Walker has enough spare letters after her name (and student loan debt) to suggest that insatiable curiosity is something fictional Tallahassee PI Sydney Brennan inherited from her creator. Fortunately, Judy’s curiosity rarely involves murders.

Born and raised in West Virginia, Judy returned to her roots in the Appalachian supernatural thriller Dead Hollow trilogy (Prodigal, Founder, and Heir). Now she's back at work on the next Sydney Brennan book.

Judy writes from her home in rainy East Hawaii, where she is surrounded by husband, feral pigs, and assorted geckos.

MY RELATIONSHIP WITH SYDNEY BRENNAN: Many authors say their characters are their alter egos, doing the things they've always wanted to do in the ways they wish they could do them. At the risk of sounding shallow, my private investigator Sydney Brennan--with her shoulder-length, curly red hair--is my Hair Alter Ego. It's hard to tell from the ancient, faded, pre-digital photo at the right, but when I was very young I had red ringlets of curls. (And yes, shockingly, that is a book in my hands.) They never grew back after my first haircut, and my mother still laments their loss. The red hue is long gone and as for the curls, the best I can do now is a persistent cowlick and the occasional unruly wave.

Sydney being Sydney but the whole scene of finding, getting Addy out of a jam had way to much filler, running in circles and just repetitive.

I love the Sydney Brennan series so much I re-read every book and novella in anticipation of the release of Memory Lane. I highly recommend at least reading Grave Truth first. In fact DO NOT READ Memory Lane until you read Grave Truth...but really just starting at the beginning would be best so you get the full picture of Sydney Brennan PI. Through the first 7 books we see Sydney get herself in and out of PTSD-worthy experiences in service to her clients, but her own story remains the biggest mystery. We learn early on that Sydney Brennan is not her real name and that she is estranged from her family - but not why.

Mystery-worthy twists revealing details of Sydneyʻs personal story show up in Grave Truth...and we get taken on a hair-raising yet heartwarming ride with her in Memory Lane. Donʻt start it late at night as I did...it is not a long read, but guaranteed you wonʻt put it down until its done.

The author once again delivers and I cannot wait to see what happens with Sydney in future books.

I received a review copy from the author at my request and this is my honest opinion. This was a very enjoyable read. I really like the characters in this series and enjoyed spending more time with them and getting to know their relationships a little better. And surprisingly, one of my favorite characters had a really short part, but he made an impact on me that I'm not sure I fully understand. That was the character of Sam, a homeless man that Syndey's dad picks up. There was something about him and his interaction with Sydney that though it was very short and unimportant in the great scheme of things, carried a lot of heart.

I only had two minor issues. The first was that this book wasn't quite as exciting as some of the others; not that it was dull and/or boring, just a little calmer. The other was the situation with Toby, Lyla, and Victor. I never felt I got a full explanation of what was going on there and why. I got enough information that I was able to draw some of my own conclusions, but I would have liked a fuller explanation so I knew I was on the right track. I will definitely be looking forward to the next book in the series.

After waiting over 2 years for a new Sydney Brennan story I was somewhat disappointed that Memory Lane was more like a novella than a full length book. That said, I was happy to reconnect..just wish it had been more than a taste. I’m not going to talk about the story itself except to suggest strongly that you start with ‘Back To Lazarus’, book 1 of the Sydney Brennan series. You won’t be disappointed. I took a chance on this unknown author in 2017 and have read everything she’s written since then including her ‘Dead Hollow’ trilogy. Love both series.. I’m a fan! Judy K. Walker is ALWAYS on my TBR list of authors.

I have been a Sydney Brennan fan from the very beginning, and I live in Tallahassee, her home base. The stories are always well researched, and the details carry from one novel to the next without a hitch. I reread Grave Truth, the preceding story, since it came out a few years ago, before reading this one, and that paid off. Great story, this one, in keeping with Sydney's personality and everything we knew about her. I just wish that in the future, she gets a dog for both companionship and protection!!

I thought this would be about an old case but it's not. This book shows how complicated life can be. It is about the past but also about family and how no one is perfect. I enjoyed how this was still Sydney at her finest.

I always want to know how Sydney’s relationships are developing. This book took her relationship with her niece, her father, and her niece’s aunt to new levels. So much accomplished! And of course lots of scary action and peril - so exciting!

I love all the Sydney Brennan novels but especially now that her niece Addy has joined the series. And great to have the relationship with her father. Wonderful read.
