Pursuing the Bear: A Sexy Shifter Paranormal Romance (Shifter Wars Book 2) Kindle Edition

4.4 out of 5 stars 52 ratings

The Shifter Wars heat up when a woman investigates the mysteries surrounding a fierce breed of man and exposes more than just secrets

Bear shifters exist. Professor Bria Lane has known this since she was a child. Now she's returned to the forests of Deep Creek to prove it to the world. She has no idea how close she is to that proof in ruggedly sexy park ranger Derek Poole. Intimately close. But uncovering Derek's wild side comes with a shattering price.

Like a magnet meeting metal, Derek is drawn to Bria. His destiny. His mate. So beautiful and so vulnerable. So dangerous, too: an encroachment of lions, vengeful and vicious, is closing in and they're ready for war. Now is not the time to be distracted like a lovesick cub.

If Bria reveals the truth of the Deep Creek shifters to the world, she'll bring out the worst of both sides. But Derek can't hide his secrets from the love of his life forever. He knows they're playing with fire—and that when passion runs this hot, this reckless, someone's bound to get burned.

Editorial Reviews

Review

4 stars: Sold and hooked! Bear shifters are my absolute favorite shifters to read about and PURSUING THE BEAR does not disappoint. Bria and Derek's story was worth the read every single last page. --Angeli at The Romance Reviews .Bria and Derek are a wonderfully balanced pair. And whilst they each have various excuses for hiding the truth from the other, I do think they were as bad at hiding secrets as each other. Bria hates liars but that's just what she did when she filled in her sabbatical application. Derek at least is trying to protect Bria and his people! Otherwise they were wonderful together and the easy friendship/romance they have was beautifully written. I loved the backstory that weaves them together. --Nikki's Book Nook.5 stars: Pursuing the Bear was a fast pace and well developed tale.--Yearwood La Novela.Kerry Adrienne surely delivers on the Carina Press Romance Promise! Pursuing the Bear, book two in the Shifter Wars series focuses on the sizzling connection between ursinologist Bria Lane and bear shifter Derek Poole. --Lovey Dovey Books.4 gems:Pursuing the Bear was a great paranormal read. It kept building not only the sexual tension but the suspense of the story. I expected it to break with every turned page. I loved that kind of expectation. It kept me in the book and engrossed with the what is happening with the characters. This is book 2 of the series and is a complete stand alone. It will just make a reader want the first book. --The Book Quarry

Book two in the Shifter Wars series was such a blast to write. With the help of my amazing editor, I delved deeper into the mythos of Deep Creek and got to write a super sexy bear shifter's story. I hope you enjoy it.

Pursuing the Bear by Kerry Adrienne is war of the worlds in shifter form. She has a way of enticing her reader into reading without stopping because they can't put the book down. Derek and Bria have alot of chemistry between them but alit if secrets as well. This is the second book in the shifter wars series and it was nice to see Griff, Amy , Elijah again. As Derek and Bria come closer to their HEA ending they learn much about each other and themselves. Love can conquer and make a couple apair in way only they know and understand. Adrienne's characteriztions are so strongly written that you care about them and what they are going through. I enjoyed this book.

Derek was hot. A hot park ranger. A tall, fit, tanned, long-haired, bearded, blue-eyed park ranger…perfect for Bria.
I have to say that in some sections of the book, the author just went on…and on…and on, about bears – more than the hot park ranger (I guess that’s my job here. lol). I think that I – and other readers – understood that Bria was a passionate ursinologist. Her rambling internal dialogue about bears was monotonous though, and appeared to be page-filler to me.
Being book 2 of the Shifter Wars series, this was Derek and Bria’s story, and it was pretty sweet. With the exception of the unresolved hatred between the bears, lions, and wolves, Deep Creek and its environs seemed to be the ideal place to live. And – did I mention that Derek was hot? With a great personality too? Yeah – double-hot. Not to mention that some of ‘the bad guys’ were pretty hot too.

Bria is an independent, but lonely woman trying to find again a little of the magic she lost as a child--and Derek just might be the very one to bring it back for her. If I had to describe their relationship in a word, I'd have to say "charming." They seem to balance each other out fairly well. Derek is impressed with her intellect and she's won over by his easy-going and gentlemanly nature. Without giving too much away, let me say that his gift to her is nothing short of cuteness overload. (And I want one now.)

I really enjoyed the first of the series, Waking the Bear, so I am excited to report that the bear and lion conflicts come to a head in this book, bringing us to the "war" part of the Shifter Wars! The lions are up to no good, but of course, as there are two sides to every story ... it will be interesting to see things from their point of view in book three.

If you liked the first book, or happen to be addicted to shifter romances, then I'd say definitely check this book out. Even if you don't usually go for paranormal romances, this series might be the one to change your mind! (Or should I say "SHIFT" your perspective? I better get going. I'm sure there are only so many puns one can BEAR.)

Bria is a professor who is doing research on bear shifters. Oh, no one knows exactly what she’s researching as she’s lied to the university for this grant. They believe she’s studying the hydration habits of bears coming out of hibernation. Ah, no. As a child, Bria saw a man and his young son walk behind a boulder near a waterfall… and emerge on the other side as a bear with his cub. She’s never forgotten and this could be the discovery that gets her the academic acclaim that her parents need to see from her to approve of her life choices. She is determined to find bear shifters at Deep Creek. She just “knows” that their DNA could cure hundreds of human diseases. And after all, they aren’t human they’re animals – the research would be humane and could help so many people.

Derick meets Bria on her first day in camp. He’s a forest ranger, an artist working with wood… and a bear shifter. He knows the dangers of letting the world know about shifters. It wouldn’t be long before the government would have them in cages, scientists tearing them apart looking for cures that his kind just did not have the answers for. It wold be the end of life as they knew it. He has to find the way to convince her to change the focus of her research. He hated lying to her but it was survival of his clan and the thousands of shifters of all species around the world at risk here. But lying, even by omission to his mate was pulling him apart. There was a war with the mountain lions brewing, and Bria has placed herself right in the middle of the territory where battle could erupt at any moment. He has to tell her the truth about himself, and convince her to keep their secret… but what if he’s already waited too long.

For me, Pursuing The Bear was a good story, so it got a 3 star rating… which is a “good” story. I am torn about this story in many ways. While the base of Bria and Derick’s romance is interesting, the coming war preparations and the intrigue, the double crossing – all of that made an interesting story. What kept me losing focus and being pulled out of the story constantly was the rehashing of Bria’s parents, how she must find something spectacular to write a paper about because then they’ll love her. I got that this project is important to Bria the first time it was mentioned. Her single mindedness on this subject was not driving home the point, it was making it an annoyance within the story to the point where I skimmed over those parts of the dialog because I didn’t want to read it yet again. Now, I don’t like say that about any story but I got it, let’s move on now.

In the end all I can do is react to what an author gives me, the reader, in a story. Bria and Derick were interesting, they had a good basic story – yet I was left wanting something more from them that I never got. A rushed ending, a sudden acceptance of everything Derick has been trying to get Bria to understand wasn’t enough to make this more than a good story for me. I wish it would have been more, and at this moment I’m not certain if I’ll continue the series. But… you as a reader have to make up your own mind. This was my reaction, it might not be yours.
