A Year Against the Rain: Lessons Learned Living Off-Grid on the Oregon Coast Paperback – September 17, 2020

4.8 out of 5 stars 10 ratings

Experience the true story of a nomadic couple and the journey of following their dreams
Ashley and Austin left Wisconsin to start a new life somewhere else, somewhere more exciting than Wisconsin. They journeyed into the unknown with only their necessary belongings and their Chevy Cruze. The couple started out trying a lifestyle of work-exchange, then lived 30 days on public land in a tent while seeing America's most beautiful National Parks. Needing a home base, they chose the Oregon Coast and survived eight months in a rustic off-grid cabin. This book is an adventure memoir of the year against the rain, having to face life lessons of becoming an adult in today's modern world while also living an alternative lifestyle. Something wild happened often, causing laughter, tears, excitement and fears during the days filled with rain,A Year Against the Rain.

In this book, Ashley and Austin will:

  • Take you across America in their little Chevy sedan, very much like van life without the van
  • Share fun and exciting tales of living in different parts of America
  • Introduce you to the struggles and victories of off-grid & nomadic living
  • Inspire you with stories of overcoming the odds to achieve your dreams
  • Give insightful lessons on the power of resilience
  • And much more!

Ashley Lynn lives a nomadic lifestyle with her partner Austin. Together, they've been perfecting their way of nomadic living for the last nine years and currently live full time in a camper in two locations. This book is the beginning of their journey and shows that even though the start of a dream can be a little rough, it is worth pursuing what one's heart desires.

Ashley's writing style and voice in "A Year Against the Rain" was very refreshing. She is clear and succinct each chapter, getting right to the point and leaving out the "fluff." She describes the important sights, places, moments and people that helped her achieve the growth and realizations she made in her adventure. For those wanting to live off-grid or perhaps take a leap of faith and travel across the country (all things I have wanted to do for myself), Ashley and Austin's experiences help provide a road map for how to get there.

What I admired most about her in this book, was her openness and honesty about the issues that she was facing. For example, to disclose something so personal like a drug addiction, yet describing beautifully the struggle that went on in her mind...Expressing the want and desire to break free from the "norm" and pursue her own happiness...And the experiences that I resonated with the most: were her experiences with her parents. Literature like this is important, to let us know that we are not alone and that we can run towards our own happiness despite the obstacles we come across.

This book was intriguing to me because I also felt unsettled and a bit lost after college - which prompted me to embark on a similar journey but instead across the country from New England landing permanently in Utah. I visited many of the places Ashley visits in her book, and can very much relate to her adventurous and curious spirit as well as her love for nature and the simple life! This book makes you feel like you are on the adventure yourself!

Kudos Ashley! Thank you for being your authentic self and for sharing with the world your most personal experiences while on this journey. Your writing placed me at every place you visited and helped me understand what you were going through by walking me through the emotions with you. What a great read!

The story of Ashley and Austin is a beautiful view of living in the present and what a world void of want can bring. Love is enough to push thru the toughest moments and experience true happiness. The journey Ashley and Austin take for their year of following the flow of life paints a beautiful picture of letting life lead versus pushing against it. Ashley's writing is open and honest and writes with a passion about her and Austin's experiences. If you want to see what the universe has to offer, this is the book that will show you that living without plans leads to personal growth and a plentiful life.

This was more than a memoir. It shared useful life lessons, and also gave me an insiders review of the most beautiful places I plan to visit on my dream RV trip in 5 years.

“… and we found emerald pools beneath the trees, cliff side gardens dripping colors…” guess I’ll be adding that one to the list! Great read.
