Riding Out the Wager: The Story of a Damaged Horse & His Soldier (The Father Michael Trilogy: Books 4 - 6 of the Riding Out series Book 1) Kindle Edition
But the priest has no practical assistance to offer, until an incident in church gives him an idea. Naturally, his plan involves the ever-reluctant and newly-wed trainer Jack Harper. It will also require the help of a horse on his farm - and a wager.
Meanwhile Father Michael gives a podcast interview to a local atheist hoping to trip him up on Catholic matters. As soon as the podcast is aired, church attendance plummets and the priest is under intense pressure from his bishop to rectify the situation.
Justin is no closer to coming back to the faith and the podcaster is rejoicing in his victory over the Church.
Will God make good come out of evil for those who love Him, as Father Michael wants to believe?

About the author

Horses captivated Hilary as a seven-year-old. Decades later, they still do. When her father replaced the family television with a book allowance for her and her brother, he was hoping they’d buy the classics. Hilary bought books on horses.
Every spare moment was spent in the attic, losing herself in the enchanting worlds of Ruby Ferguson’s Jill Books and the complete series of Flicka by Mary O’Hara, among others. She also purchased multiple tomes on horse care and obsessed about owning a pony.
Hilary also managed to almost fail English in school – somewhat unusual training for a future best selling author.
Happily, her childhood dreams were realized, and she has owned many horses. Her current equine soulmate, Cruz Bay, is a homebred Thoroughbred Welsh Cob cross. She competes with him in dressage and aspires to joining The Century Club one day, where the combined ages of horse and owner add up to one hundred!
Hilary’s Christian faith was growing at the same time as her riding skills improved and she rediscovered the ultimate goal: getting to Heaven. Her writing combines the beauty of horses with the truth of the Gospel and she hopes her books will encourage readers to join her in striving for that goal.
A note for readers of her Catholic books: The traditional Latin Mass is not available where she lives, so Hilary attends the Novus Ordo Mass at her local parish church, which is blessed with three holy priests who celebrate it with reverent devotion.

Hilary Walker
What an excellent book. I’m a believer in Jesus Christ, but am not Roman Catholic. I’ve now read two of Hilary Walkers books and have loved the infusion of horses, Faith, and healing.
This book gave me insight into the role of a priest I’ve appreciated as well.
This story line was how Father Michael saw the need to help his parishioners with a member of the family with PTSD. Beautifully weaving others in to help this man with his PTSD.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 16, 2017An amazing story of how a soldier with PTSD is helped when he learns to comfort an abused horse. Father Michael ,who is working with the soldier, has a major part in helping Justin, the soldier. The author makes the characters so believable and keeps the plot developing to keep the reader engaged. This Christian book was a joy to read and I look forward to reading more in this series.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 28, 2017This book deals with a difficult subject, namely PTSD suffered by an army veteran who receives help for his crippling problem from the Catholic priest, Father Michael and also an abused horse.
The story is extremely well written and I particularly liked the character of Father Michael who isn't above using a bit of emotional blackmail to achieve his ends, but only in the best of causes.
This is a very uplifting and quite emotional story with an important message, it is well worth reading.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 2, 2019Well written story. There are many different types of things going on throughout the adventures of Father Michael. Enjoyed the pulling together of different events with different people to make for a very rewarding read.

- Reviewed in the United States on September 20, 2017This is a fantastic story about a veteran with PTSD who finds healing in friendship with an horse that was abused and is now at a foster stable. It also has a Catholic Priest who is inspirational without being preachy.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 8, 2017I chose this book because I love horses, but I fell in love with the story line and even cried a few times.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 7, 2019Horses, family and friends, all working together with God to heal a soldier with PTSD. This is a beautifully told story of how people can overcome problems if they just pray, hang in there and wait for God's perfect answer. Even priests have problems and have to wait for God to answer their prayers. The message came through very clearly in the story, without seeming contrived. Well done, Hilary. I really want to read the other books about Father Michael.

4.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable and educating
This book is about the healing of a man with postraumatic stress disorder from his war experiences, about horses and a priest. A side story is about the dangers of podcasts & journalism. It's christian literature, easy to read and educating about PTSD and horse training. The characters are nice and likeable.
