    Kristy and Jackson are happily married with a bubbly three-year-old and another child on the way when tragedy strikes. A convenience store robbery goes wrong (do they ever go right?) and Jackson gives his life to save another.

    Kristy suddenly finds herself a single mother raising a willful little girl with no man in the house save a protective blue-eyed rescue dog named Skye. But when a mysterious fire breaks out in the rural canyon where they live, a dashing firefighter comes into Kristy’s life, and sparks fly long after the blaze has been extinguished…

    This contemporary “second chances” romance is the fifth in a series by Pat Adeff, and once again the author delivers a heartwarming story about finding a way back to love even after tragic losses have made it seem impossible. In addition to a plucky heroine and an adorable dog, what makes this installment especially fun is that so many characters from Adeff’s previous novels reappear. This creates a “small world” feel that lends the tale a nice authenticity.

    If I had to nitpick, I think Adeff’s prose is sometimes a bit underwritten. Don’t get me wrong. I’m not one for pretentious, flowery overwriting; in fact, I hate it. But a little more scene-setting would be welcome.

    That said, in a world that seems to grow darker all the time, Adeff’s clean, fun contemporary romances remind us that sometimes “second chance” dreams really do come true.

    This latest book in Adeff’s "Second Chances Do Happen" series should appeal to romance fans, especially those who enjoy a gentle tale of love rising from the ashes. In this case, the story begins with tragedy (not a spoiler; the event happens early on).

    Grieving young widow Kristy is left to raise her toddler, Libby, all alone. Thankfully, they have the support of loving family members, who rally around to lend their support. But can Kristy find true love a second time? Or is she doomed to live a lonely, partnerless life?

    I particularly appreciated the characterization of the precocious Libby, who, at a tender age, seems set to take on the world. Just as well, since she and her mom face various ups-and-downs on the way to a satisfying conclusion.

But her grief begins to abate when she meets Lucas, a local firefighter who rescues her daughter’s dog during a wildfire. Their lives seem headed for a new beginning but life is never that simple. City corruption results in loss of funding for firefighters and a rise in dangerous arson fires. And a bitter, vindictive mother-in-law sues to take Kristy’s daughter away. My only complaint is that the book was too short. I wanted more about the corruption scandal and even the nasty mother-in-law! But a very sweet love story.

    I was looking for a feel good book about second chances, especially for an older woman. The first book was just that. I had to read the next books which ended with this book. The books do not have the same characters except for the last two books. I became so caught up in these books that I read each book in a day. Thank goodness for my Unlimited account. I hope you enjoy these books as much as I have!

    It was hard to read the first few chapters as they dealt with heartbreak and loss. But on the other side of the tragedy, there comes a new beginning. I loved all the characters in this book, especially the main three. Kristy is wary to let her heart love again, but Lucas is just the right person for her - even if she doesn't know it at first. Libby was cute and precocious and stole pretty much all of her scenes in the book. Highly recommended!

    Niether Kristy or Lucas were looking for love, but they were both bowled over when they met each other. Both pulled back, but the attraction wouldn't quit. They eventually got together, aided by her precocious young daughter.

    I enjoyed meeting the Second Chances Do Happen series characters again, plus some new and interesting ones. I look forward to seeing where the author goes next.
